OBS’s Automatically Reconnect setting can recover a dropped streaming connection only while OBS is still running. If OBS itself crashes or exits, you need an external process supervisor to relaunch it. Configure OBS to start streaming when launched, make sure YouTube’s broadcast settings match the behavior you want, and test the complete recovery chain before leaving a loop unattended.
First, identify what stopped
“Crash” can mean two different failures, and they need different fixes:

- OBS is still open, but the output disconnected: use OBS’s output auto-reconnect settings.
- The OBS process exited or crashed: use an operating-system or process-monitoring supervisor to launch OBS again. Auto-reconnect cannot restart an application that is no longer running.
These are separate recovery layers. Neither setting guarantees that a machine, network, media source, or YouTube broadcast will recover from every failure.
Recover a dropped connection while OBS is still running
- In OBS, open the output settings for the streaming output you use and find Automatically Reconnect. The exact menu location can vary by OBS release and output type.
- Enable automatic reconnect, then set a retry delay and maximum retry count that suit your stream. A short interruption may recover without restarting OBS.
- Check that the selected output supports reconnect. OBS’s Output API documents a retry count of zero as disabling reconnect; it also documents that the retry interval doubles after each retry. See the OBS Studio Output API reference.
This setting applies to output connection failures under OBS’s control. It does not relaunch OBS after the process exits.

Restart OBS after the process exits
For a process crash, configure a supervisor outside OBS to detect that OBS has exited and launch it again. The supervisor might be an operating-system scheduling or process-monitoring facility, but the exact setup depends on your operating system and whether OBS runs in an interactive desktop session. OBS documents launch parameters; it does not prescribe one universal watchdog configuration.
Make the relaunch start streaming
OBS supports the --startstreaming launch parameter. You can also specify a profile and scene collection so a relaunch uses the intended configuration. For example, the general form is:

Windows working directory and session
For scheduled or automated Windows launches, OBS’s launch-parameter guidance says to set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. Also run the task under the account and desktop-session context you expect: a process started outside the interactive session may not behave like an OBS instance launched manually.
Prevent a rapid restart loop
- Set a delay before relaunching rather than repeatedly starting OBS immediately.
- Use a restart limit or alert if the process exits repeatedly; an immediate recurring crash needs diagnosis, not endless retries.
- Have a manual recovery procedure for cases the supervisor cannot fix, such as a host outage, lost network, invalid stream key, or broken media source.
Check YouTube’s broadcast settings
OBS sends a stream URL and stream key to YouTube. In YouTube Live, review the settings for the specific stream, including Auto-start and Auto-stop. These options affect the broadcast lifecycle; they do not restart OBS. YouTube also notes that reusing stream settings copies the Auto-start and Auto-stop selections, so check those values when you reuse a setup. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

- 4K60 Capture: Record in cinematic quality with crisp detail and vivid colors
- HFR Support: Play and capture in 1440p120 or 1080p240
- HDR10 Support: Capture brilliant HDR content with tone mapping on Windows
- Cross-Platform Compatible: Works with PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch 2, and more
- Analog Audio In: Capture in-game chat or commentary with 3.5mm input
Whether YouTube resumes or ends a broadcast after an interruption depends on the configured stream and what happened. The official guidance does not establish one universal hold-open period or guarantee that every broadcast remains resumable after a crash, power loss, or long outage.
Test the whole recovery path before relying on it
- Use a controlled test stream and confirm OBS opens with the intended profile, scene collection, sources, and media.
- Confirm the launch parameter starts streaming as expected and that YouTube receives the encoder input.
- Test the connection-retry case separately from the process-exit case. For the latter, verify the supervisor detects an OBS exit and relaunches the application.
- Check YouTube’s stream health and broadcast status, including representative audio and motion. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event; OBS’s Quick Start Guide recommends testing settings for a few minutes. See YouTube encoder settings and stream health guidance and the OBS Project Quick Start Guide.
- Verify alerts or logs and confirm the supervisor does not repeatedly restart a failing process without notifying you.
Common failures and what to check
| Symptom | Likely layer | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| OBS stays open, but the stream disconnects | Output connection | Check that automatic reconnect is enabled for a supported output and review its retry settings. |
| OBS exits and never comes back | Process supervision | Check that the supervisor monitors the correct process, can launch OBS in the intended account/session, and points to the correct executable. |
| OBS returns, but does not stream | Launch configuration | Confirm --startstreaming, the selected profile and scene collection, and the media source state. |
| OBS sends input, but YouTube does not show the expected broadcast state | YouTube broadcast configuration | Review the stream key and the stream’s Auto-start and Auto-stop settings. |
| OBS repeatedly exits after relaunch | Underlying host or OBS issue | Use a restart delay and alert, then diagnose the recurring failure instead of allowing unlimited rapid restarts. |
