To start an idle channel automatically, create an EventBridge rule for MediaLive channel state-change events and route it to a handler that checks the channel’s current state and, if your recovery policy allows, calls the MediaLive StartChannel operation.
These are different recovery cases: pipeline recovery is handled within a running channel; restarting an idle channel requires your own event-driven workflow. A full stop and restart can interrupt the stream, and AWS does not establish a universal recovery time or guarantee uninterrupted output.

First identify what failed
Choose the recovery mechanism based on whether the problem is upstream of MediaLive, within an encoder pipeline, or a stopped channel. Restarting the whole channel is not the right response to every failure.
| Failure | Relevant mechanism | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Upstream source or path into MediaLive | Automatic input failover, when supported inputs are configured as a failover pair | Switches processing to the standby input when configured failure conditions occur; it does not restart the whole channel. AWS automatic input failover |
| One MediaLive encoder pipeline fails while the channel is running | Channel pipeline redundancy and MediaLive recovery | MediaLive can recover a failed pipeline. A standard channel’s redundant pipeline design protects against a pipeline failure, with downstream handling depending on the output design. AWS pipeline redundancy |
The entire channel is stopped and in IDLE |
External event-driven start workflow | Your automation checks whether a start is safe and explicitly starts the channel. AWS channel start and stop behavior |
AWS describes the distinction directly: “You must always start a channel manually. The channel never starts automatically except when it is already running and attempts to recover from a failure.” See Starting the channel in the MediaLive User Guide.

Understand MediaLive channel states before automating
Use the event as a prompt to inspect the channel, not as sufficient proof that a start should be issued. MediaLive documents these relevant states: IDLE means the channel is not running; RECOVERING means one or both pipelines failed and MediaLive is restarting them; STARTING and STOPPING are transitional; and RUNNING means the channel is running. AWS channel state monitoring
- For
RECOVERING, let MediaLive’s pipeline recovery proceed rather than issuing a whole-channel start. - For
STARTINGorSTOPPING, wait for the transition and re-check state instead of issuing a competing operation. - For
RUNNING, do not start the channel again. If you need to restart a pipeline on a running channel, use the pipeline-specific operation described below. - For
IDLE, proceed only if your recovery policy authorizes a start and the inputs and schedule are ready.
Build an EventBridge-to-start workflow
MediaLive emits channel state-change events that EventBridge can route to a target such as Lambda. An event includes the detail type MediaLive Channel State Change, source aws.medialive, and fields such as detail.state, detail.channel_arn, and detail.pipelines_running_count. - Create a narrowly scoped EventBridge rule. Match source
aws.medialiveand detail typeMediaLive Channel State Change. Narrow the rule to the intended channel resource or ARN and the state your workflow considers actionable; avoid triggering recovery logic for every event from every channel. Consult EventBridge event patterns for pattern syntax. - Route matching events to a handler. Lambda is one possible target. Parse the channel identifier from the event’s resource ARN or
detail.channel_arn. Do not assume an event alone proves the channel is still in the state it reported. - Read the current channel state. Query MediaLive for the channel’s live state before acting. This protects against a delayed or repeated event arriving after the channel has already changed state.
- Apply your recovery policy. If the live state is
IDLE, the source is ready, and policy permits unattended recovery, call the MediaLiveStartChannelAPI (or the equivalent SDK operation). Do not call it merely because an event reportsRECOVERING,STARTING,STOPPING, orRUNNING. - Log the decision and result. Record the event, observed state, policy decision, and API outcome so an operator can distinguish a skipped start from a failed start.
- Make retries safe and monitor for missed events. Use state checks and bounded retry handling to prevent duplicate or competing actions. MediaLive service-event delivery through EventBridge is best-effort, so alert on a persistent
IDLEstate or periodically reconcile channel state if a missed notification is unacceptable.
The event source, format, and best-effort delivery are AWS-documented behavior. Using Lambda, recording decisions, making a handler retry-safe, alerting, and periodically reconciling state are operational design recommendations; AWS does not prescribe one recovery policy for every channel. For EventBridge delivery behavior, see AWS MediaLive event monitoring.

Check inputs and schedules before enabling unattended starts
A successful start request does not make an unavailable source ready. Validate how the channel receives its inputs and how its schedule behaves before allowing automation to start it without an operator.

- Push inputs: AWS notes that push inputs must already be sending before the channel starts. Confirm the upstream encoder or sender is active before the handler calls
StartChannel. - Scheduled input switching: For channels with multiple inputs, MediaLive selects the input according to schedule state. Review the schedule so a restart does not select an unintended source.
- Scheduled file inputs: A file input may replay from the beginning of its file or clip after a restart rather than resume at the point that corresponds to elapsed wall-clock time. Confirm that replay is acceptable for the content.
See AWS guidance on starting channels and input behavior.
Use the pipeline restart operation only for a running channel
RestartChannelPipelines is for a channel that is currently running; it is not the operation to start a stopped, idle channel. If a channel remains running but a particular pipeline needs a restart, follow the API’s requirements and identify the intended pipeline. For an idle channel, the relevant operation is StartChannel, guarded by the state and readiness checks above. See AWS RestartChannelPipelines API reference.

Plan for interruption, delivery gaps, and cost
An event-driven start workflow automates a decision and API call; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted stream. The documented behavior supports recovery and restarting, not a universal restart duration or continuity promise. Choose whether an idle event should trigger an automatic start, an alert for an operator, or a bounded retry policy according to the channel’s content, cost, and outage tolerance.
Recommended Free Tools
- Because event delivery is best-effort, decide whether an alert or periodic state reconciliation is needed for your operational requirements.
- Repeated events or retries can produce duplicate actions unless the handler rechecks live state and treats transitions as non-actionable.
- Starting a channel can incur service costs according to your AWS configuration and usage. Estimate the consequences of repeated restarts and set appropriate limits and alerts; no universal cost or retry count applies to every channel.
- Before adding full-channel restart logic, check whether input failover or pipeline redundancy addresses the actual failure more directly.
Troubleshoot automatic restart
- The channel remains idle. Check that the EventBridge rule matches the event’s exact source and detail type, that it is scoped to the right channel and actionable state, and that the target can invoke the handler. Since delivery is best-effort, also inspect logs and use an alert or reconciliation check for persistent idle state.
- The handler receives an event but does not start the channel. Inspect its state-check and policy logs. It should skip non-idle states and may intentionally skip an idle channel if the source is not ready or policy disallows an unattended start.
- The start request fails or the channel does not become operational. Confirm that the handler uses the channel identifier from the event, has permission to call the required MediaLive operations, and that push inputs are already sending. Review the current state and API result before retrying.
- The stream resumes on an unexpected input or at an unexpected point. Review the channel schedule and file-input behavior; scheduled input selection is evaluated on restart, and a file input may replay from its beginning.
- The automation acts during recovery or a transition. Re-read the channel’s current state immediately before acting and treat
RECOVERING,STARTING,STOPPING, andRUNNINGas states that do not call forStartChannel. - A pipeline issue persists while the channel is running. Investigate MediaLive’s pipeline recovery and redundancy design. Do not use the stopped-channel start workflow as a substitute for the pipeline-specific procedure.
