Use two recovery layers: FFmpeg’s fifo muxer can retry certain output failures while FFmpeg is still running, and a process supervisor such as systemd can start FFmpeg again after it exits. They address different failures. After either recovery, check YouTube Live Control Room or the public watch page—an active FFmpeg process does not prove that viewers can see a healthy stream.
First identify what failed
A YouTube radio stream can stop appearing for at least two different reasons. FFmpeg may still be running but unable to write to its network output, or the FFmpeg process may have exited. The first case may be handled inside FFmpeg with its FIFO output muxer; the second requires something outside FFmpeg to launch a new process.

| Symptom | Recovery layer to consider | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg is alive, but output writes are failing or interrupted. | FIFO output recovery can retry selected output failures. | That YouTube has resumed receiving or showing the stream. |
| FFmpeg has exited. | A supervisor such as systemd can restart the process after an eligible exit. | That the restarted encoder connected successfully or the broadcast is accessible. |
These layers can be combined: FIFO may handle a temporary output interruption without ending the process, while systemd handles a process exit. Neither is a substitute for checking YouTube’s side of the connection.

Use FFmpeg FIFO recovery for output interruptions
FFmpeg documents the fifo muxer as a way to queue output packets and attempt recovery from some output failures. Recovery is opt-in: attempt_recovery defaults to false. The documented RTMP example uses a FIFO muxer configured for FLV output and enables recovery. It is a generic RTMP example, not a guarantee specific to YouTube.

Check that your FFmpeg build supports the options
Before changing a command, inspect the installed build:
ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo
Confirm that the FIFO muxer and the options you plan to use are present. FFmpeg’s online documentation is rolling, so behavior and availability should be checked against the installed release. FIFO options are output/muxer options; put them with the output they configure, and test the resulting command before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.
Adapt the output, not just the input
The following is a pattern based on FFmpeg’s documented generic RTMP example. Replace the placeholders with your actual input and YouTube ingest details, and confirm option placement against ffmpeg -h muxer=fifo for your build:

This example assumes the input’s video and audio can be copied into the chosen output format. If they cannot, configure suitable encoding instead of copying; the command is not a universal preset. The one-second retry delay is the value used in FFmpeg’s example, not a YouTube-specific recommendation. FIFO’s documented default retry delay is five seconds.

The example enables drop_pkts_on_overflow. That can let processing continue by omitting queued packets when the queue fills; it may therefore introduce gaps. If uninterrupted completeness matters more than avoiding a stall, do not enable that tradeoff blindly. Test with the actual input and decide which failure mode is less damaging for your broadcast.
Choose retry behavior deliberately
| Option | Documented behavior | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
attempt_recovery |
Enables recovery attempts; default is false. | Enable it if you want FIFO to try recovering eligible output failures. |
recovery_wait_time |
Delay between attempts; default is five seconds. | Choose a delay suited to temporary interruptions rather than retrying needlessly fast. |
max_recovery_attempts |
Maximum successive failures; zero means unlimited. | Decide whether persistent output trouble should eventually end FFmpeg so a supervisor can take over. |
recover_any_error |
Attempts recovery regardless of error type; default is false. Some errors are usually permanent. | Do not treat every failure as temporary; invalid settings or other persistent errors need correction. |
drop_pkts_on_overflow |
Drops queued packets rather than blocking when the queue fills. | Accept possible omissions only if continued processing is preferable to a stall. |
restart_with_keyframe |
Can wait for a keyframe after recovery; default is false. | Evaluate it for your video stream and test the result. |
Do not set unlimited retries automatically just because zero means unlimited. If the underlying error is permanent, repeated attempts may conceal the root cause or leave the stream unavailable indefinitely.
Restart FFmpeg after the process exits with systemd
On a Linux host using systemd, configure FFmpeg as a foreground service and use a restart policy such as Restart=on-failure. A deliberate RestartSec= delay prevents an immediate retry loop. The exact unit directives, restart limits, user, paths, and environment depend on the host and systemd version; verify them against the installed systemd manual before deployment.
Create a service that supervises FFmpeg itself
A starting unit pattern is below. Replace the paths, account, input, and output with your own values. This is not a universal complete unit; in particular, check the available directives and restart-limit behavior on your system.

This simpler example uses a direct FLV output; it does not include FIFO recovery. If you combine it with the FIFO approach, use the FIFO-configured output command you have tested rather than running two unrelated FFmpeg processes. Keep FFmpeg in the foreground so systemd supervises the encoder itself; a wrapper that forks or backgrounds FFmpeg can make service state misleading.
Load, start, and inspect the service
Save the unit as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-radio.service, then run:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now youtube-radio.service
sudo systemctl status youtube-radio.service
sudo journalctl -u youtube-radio.service -f
daemon-reload makes systemd read the unit, enable --now enables it at boot and starts it now, and the status and journal commands help you see whether it is running and why it stopped. If you edit the unit, reload systemd and restart the service. A service marked active only tells you about the supervised process, not whether YouTube is receiving a valid feed.
Use logs to fix persistent input, permission, argument, stream-key, or connectivity errors rather than allowing an uncontrolled restart loop. If a start-rate limit is reached, inspect the service logs and the installed systemd documentation for the host’s applicable limit and recovery procedure; do not assume a universal default.

Verify YouTube ingestion after recovery
After FIFO recovers or systemd relaunches FFmpeg, check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and monitoring, then confirm the public watch page is accessible as expected. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key. If the encoder reports a start error, check that the configured key is current; YouTube provides a way to reset a compromised key.
Check encoder settings if FFmpeg runs but the feed is wrong
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingestion, CBR bitrate mode, a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. These are ingestion settings to check when the process is running but the feed does not appear correctly. They do not supervise FFmpeg or restart a crashed process.
For the audio setting relevant to a stereo AAC stream, YouTube lists 128 Kbps. Match settings to the actual stream and current YouTube guidance rather than treating a restart policy as an encoder-compatibility fix.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Protect the stream key
- Do not publish the stream key in a public service file, command log, screenshot, or support post.
- Restrict access to the service configuration and any environment file that contains the key to the account and administrators who need it.
- If you believe the key has been exposed, reset it in YouTube and update the encoder configuration with the current key.
Troubleshoot the common failure cases
| What you see | Likely area to investigate | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg stays running while the output is interrupted. | Output recovery is not enabled, or the failure is not one FIFO can recover from. | Inspect FFmpeg’s error output and FIFO options for the installed build. Confirm attempt_recovery is enabled and choose retry behavior intentionally. |
| FFmpeg exits and does not return. | The service may not be enabled, may not supervise the actual FFmpeg process, or may not restart for that exit condition. | Check systemctl status and the journal, then verify the unit’s restart policy and host-specific restart limits. |
| The service repeatedly restarts. | A persistent configuration, input, permissions, key, or connectivity error may be causing each new process to fail. | Read the first meaningful FFmpeg error in the journal and correct its cause before allowing more retries. |
| Systemd reports the service as active, but viewers cannot see the stream. | The process is alive, but YouTube may not be receiving a valid feed or the broadcast may not be accessible. | Check the Live Control Room preview and monitoring, then the watch page. Review the ingest URL, key, and encoder settings. |
| The encoder reports a YouTube start error after a restart. | The stream key may be stale or incorrect. | Verify the current key in YouTube and update the encoder configuration. Reset the key if it may have been compromised. |
| The picture or sound has gaps after FIFO recovery. | Packets may have been dropped when the FIFO queue overflowed. | Reconsider drop_pkts_on_overflow and the tradeoff between omissions and a stalled encoder; test with your stream. |
