For the lowest cash cost, start with equipment and broadband you already have. Measure the device’s real power draw, stream at the lowest resolution and frame rate that suit your content, and calculate electricity using your local tariff. There is no single defensible all-India monthly cost: it depends on your equipment, state and utility, broadband plan, and backup needs. For prerecorded videos, a cloud service is another option; for a live camera or event, a local device still has to capture the source.
Choose the cheapest approach for your kind of stream
A YouTube live stream depends on a content source or playout system, an encoder, an internet connection, and YouTube’s ingestion service. The right low-cost setup depends on which of those must run continuously.

- Camera, event, gameplay, or another live source: Reuse a computer or other capable device you already own as the encoder, if it can sustain the stream you need. A cloud loop of uploaded videos cannot replace a live camera feed.
- Prerecorded videos or a playlist: Compare the cost of leaving a local computer on with a cloud playout service. A cloud service avoids keeping a home encoder running, but there is no verified, current India-wide service price that establishes it as the cheapest option for every channel.
- Frequent power interruptions: Budget for backup power for every essential local device, including the encoder or playback machine and the modem or ONT and router. A router-only backup will not keep the stream going if the encoder loses power.
- Frequent internet interruptions: Test the connection and consider a genuinely independent second connection if one is available at your address. A powered router cannot keep the stream online if the ISP path is down.

Measure the equipment’s real power draw
Use a plug-in power meter where practical to measure the average load of the equipment that must stay on. Do not estimate the cost from a device’s maximum rated wattage unless that is what it actually draws continuously. Include the encoder or playback device and any production equipment needed for the stream. Measure network devices separately if they are on a different power supply or backup circuit.

Calculate monthly energy use as:
Monthly kWh = average watts × 24 hours × 30 days ÷ 1,000
For arithmetic illustration only, a steady 50 W load uses 36 kWh over 30 days; a steady 100 W load uses 72 kWh. These are examples, not measured consumption for a particular streaming setup. Multiply your measured kWh by the applicable local marginal electricity tariff, then account separately for fixed charges, tariff slabs, taxes, or subsidies that apply to your bill.
Keep other recurring costs separate
Do not treat electricity as the whole cost. Include any incremental broadband charge, backup-power equipment and battery replacement, new or replacement hardware, and any cloud hosting or service fee. If you already pay for broadband and own a suitable computer, those costs may not increase when you start streaming; if you need to upgrade or buy equipment, include that added cost in your comparison.

A Ministry of Power release dated 23 March 2026 says electricity supply and distribution are administered by state governments or distribution utilities. It describes Rule 10 of the Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Rules, 2020 as providing for 24×7 supply while allowing commissions to specify lower supply hours for some categories. That national rule does not establish uninterrupted service at a particular premises. Check the current tariff and supply conditions for your state, utility, and consumer category.

BharatNet lists a bandwidth tariff of ₹120 per Mbps per year plus prevailing GST for that service, effective from 11 May 2026 through 31 December 2028 unless revised earlier. This is a service-specific tariff, not a representative household broadband package price. Check local ISP plans and availability when making your budget.
Set the stream to fit your connection
Confirm YouTube eligibility and encoder access
YouTube requires a channel to be verified and to have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Confirm that your channel can go live before buying hardware or arranging paid hosting.
For encoder-based streaming, YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key. Enter them in your encoder as described in YouTube’s encoder instructions, then start and stop the feed from the encoder and YouTube’s live controls. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to your channel.

These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Wi-Fi or broadband line will sustain the stream. Consult YouTube’s full encoder bitrate table for other codecs, resolutions, and frame rates. Start with a format your upload connection can sustain with headroom, then check the stream’s health during a test.
Test upload speed and stability
YouTube recommends testing outbound bitrate, leaving about 20% headroom, and checking audio, video, encoder failover, and stream health. Its network guidance warns: “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” A speed-test result is only a snapshot; it does not prove the connection will remain stable for an all-day broadcast. Test at the location and, if possible, at the time of day you plan to stream.

Size backup power for the whole local setup
List every device that has to remain powered: the encoder or playback machine, modem or ONT, router, and any necessary production equipment. Add their measured loads, then choose a UPS or inverter based on that combined load and the runtime you need. Compare usable output capacity, expected runtime under your actual load, battery replacement cost, protection for network devices, and local service or warranty. There is no universal “streaming UPS” capacity or runtime without those measurements.

Backup power can protect local equipment during a power cut; it cannot restore a failed ISP connection or a YouTube-side interruption. Test the complete arrangement under the intended load rather than assuming that equipment labels guarantee a particular runtime or an uninterrupted stream.

Consider a second connection only if it is independent
A backup connection can help only if it is genuinely independent and usable at the streaming address. Check how it reaches the internet, whether it remains available during the failures that affect your primary connection, and whether its upload capacity is sufficient. A powered modem or router does not establish that the ISP’s network is still reachable.
Protect the archive as well as the live signal
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams. Do not assume a continuous all-day broadcast will create a complete replay. If preserving the program matters, plan shorter sessions and consider making a local recording.

- Guessing electricity cost from a power-supply label: Measure the actual continuous load, then use the formula and your local tariff.
- Buying a UPS for only the router: Include the encoder and every other essential local device in the load and runtime calculation.
