Turn on Restart on schedule, then choose the available day or days and time. The restart may be delayed if the phone is in use or does not meet Samsung’s conditions.
Set a scheduled restart
- Open Settings.
- Tap Device care or Battery and device care.
- Tap Auto optimization or Auto optimisation.
- Tap Auto restart, if it appears.
- Turn on Restart on schedule, then select the available day or days and time.
Samsung’s US support page documents the route through Settings > Device care > Auto optimization > Auto restart and says to select restart days and a time: Samsung US Device Care instructions. Menu names and availability vary by model, software version, and region. If you cannot find the setting, search Settings for “Auto restart” or check the manual for your exact model.

What the two Auto restart options do
| Option | Who determines when it restarts? | Can you select a day and time? |
|---|---|---|
| Restart on schedule | You set the schedule. | Yes, where the option is available. |
| Restart when needed | The device restarts under optimization conditions. | No fixed user-selected day and time. |
These are separate controls, not two names for the same feature. Samsung’s support guidance describes the distinction and the current menu: Samsung Singapore troubleshooting guidance. Samsung India says Android 13 / One UI 5 introduced updated Auto optimisation behavior; earlier versions had users manually set a day and time for Automatic restart. That history does not mean every current model or region has the same menu: Samsung India Auto optimisation guidance.
Conditions that can delay a scheduled restart
A selected time is not a guarantee that the phone will restart at that exact minute. Samsung says automatic restart runs only when the device is not being used; its current Singapore guidance specifies that the screen should be off and the battery level at least 30%. If those conditions are not met, the scheduled restart may not run as expected.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
After a restart, unlock the phone to check messages and notifications normally. Samsung notes that credentials are required after restart: Samsung US Device Care instructions.
If the phone restarts unexpectedly
A restart that was not scheduled may have another cause. Samsung identifies software updates and recently installed third-party apps as possible causes, and notes that emergency security updates can restart devices depending on region.
