That restarts the process after a failure exit, but it cannot detect every stream failure: if GStreamer reports a pipeline error and the process stays alive, systemd has nothing to restart. For that case, handle GStreamer bus errors in an application or wrapper and exit unsuccessfully when recovery is not possible.
Confirm the pipeline works before creating a service
First run the complete GStreamer command manually as the same user, with the same environment, working directory and installed plugins that the service will use. Confirm in YouTube Live Control Room that video and audio arrive. Test representative movement and sound, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages. A command that works only in your interactive shell may fail under systemd because its user, paths, environment or plugin setup differ.

gst-launch-1.0 is useful for assembling and checking a pipeline, but GStreamer describes it primarily as a debugging tool and recommends using the GStreamer API in applications. Use a system service whose main process is the GStreamer command. Keep it in the foreground: a shell script that backgrounds GStreamer and exits leaves systemd supervising the short-lived shell instead of the stream.

Check the installed systemd manual for supported directives and any start-limit settings; systemd versions and distribution conventions can differ.
Why these restart settings
Type=simplesuits a foreground process that systemd starts and supervises directly.Restart=on-failureasks systemd to restart after an unsuccessful exit, subject to systemd’s applicable limits and unit settings.RestartSec=5sinserts a brief pause before a restart. Adjust it to avoid an overly rapid retry loop if the underlying problem persists.Wants=network-online.targetandAfter=network-online.targetexpress a boot ordering dependency; they do not prove that YouTube is reachable or that the stream is healthy.
Do not add Restart=always without considering intentional stops: it can restart a service after a clean exit as well. A systemd restart policy supervises process termination; it does not verify that YouTube is receiving media.

Load, enable and inspect the service
Save the unit under /etc/systemd/system/, replacing gstreamer-youtube.service below with the filename you chose. These are conventional system-service commands; use the privileges and unit-name conventions appropriate to your distribution.
- Reload unit definitions:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable the service at boot and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now gstreamer-youtube.service. - Check whether the process is running and review its recent status:
sudo systemctl status gstreamer-youtube.service. - Read service output and errors:
sudo journalctl -u gstreamer-youtube.service. Add-fto follow new entries while troubleshooting.
Know what systemd can—and cannot—restart
Systemd acts on the service process. If that process exits unsuccessfully, Restart=on-failure can restart it. A GStreamer pipeline can instead post an error on its bus and stop handling media while its process remains alive. In that state, systemd sees a running process and will not restart it just because the stream has gone unhealthy. GStreamer strongly recommends that applications handle bus errors; its documentation notes that further media handling can stall after an error. GStreamer: bus

Choose recovery based on the failure you need to handle

For robust recovery, use a small application or wrapper that watches for GStreamer bus errors and end-of-stream events, cleans up the pipeline, and either retries deliberately or exits with a nonzero status. If a wrapper launches a child process, it must remain in the foreground, propagate the child’s exit status, and handle termination signals correctly. Use current YouTube ingest details and suitable encoder settings
Get the ingest URL and stream key from your account’s YouTube Live Control Room rather than relying on an example endpoint. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS workflows and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video codecs. For the selected ingest settings, YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), constant bitrate, and AAC or MP3 audio. Example H.264 bitrate recommendations
YouTube Help’s encoder-settings table recommends the following H.264 video bitrates. Treat them as recommendations for those specific resolutions and frame rates, not as a substitute for selecting settings suitable for your stream and connection.

YouTube says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Run one before choosing an upload target, then test the actual stream and monitor its health in Live Control Room. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions
Protect the stream key
- Keep the key out of public repositories, world-readable unit files and logs.
- Use a restricted environment or credential mechanism appropriate to your host and installed systemd version.
- If you change or reset the key in YouTube, update the service configuration accordingly.
GStreamer documents rtmpsink as an element for delivering data to an RTMP server and provides a sample FLV pipeline. That documents the element’s role; it does not mean an arbitrary pipeline will match your YouTube account’s current ingest details or encoder settings. GStreamer: rtmpsink
Troubleshoot automatic restarts
- The service exits immediately: Run the exact command manually as the configured service user and inspect
journalctl -u gstreamer-youtube.service. Check the executable path, working directory, pipeline syntax, installed plugins and environment. - The process is running, but YouTube receives no media: A live process is not proof of a healthy pipeline. Check the GStreamer bus and logs for errors, then check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages. Add application-level error handling or health monitoring if the pipeline can stall without exiting.
- The service does not restart after an error: Check whether the process actually exited and whether it exited unsuccessfully. A bus error that leaves the process alive does not trigger a process restart; have the application handle the error or exit nonzero.
- It repeatedly restarts: Inspect the journal for the original failure and adjust the retry delay or local start limits as appropriate. Repeatedly restarting will not fix a bad pipeline, unavailable plugin, invalid key or persistent connectivity problem.
- It works manually but not at boot: Compare the interactive and service users, environment, directory, executable path and plugin availability. Ensure the service has the permissions it needs without exposing the stream key.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: Confirm the current ingest URL and key, review codec and encoder settings, test upload capacity, and compare actual stream behavior with YouTube’s health messages. A successful systemd status check alone is insufficient.
