Start by confirming whether you run Cisco Secure Email Gateway or Secure Email and Web Manager and which AsyncOS release branch it uses, then install the matching fixed release in Cisco’s September 2026 hardening advisory. Cisco says there is no workaround. Do not assume CVE-2026-76443 is the separately documented, actively exploited SQL injection flaw: Cisco identifies that issue as CVE-2026-76461.
What Cisco has—and has not—said about CVE-2026-76443
Cisco lists CVE-2026-76443 in a group of hardening vulnerabilities classified as CWE-707, improper neutralization. The category covers several possible bug types, including command, SQL and code/eval injection, as well as cross-site scripting. Cisco’s September 2026 advisory does not give this CVE its own exploit narrative or identify which of those mechanisms applies to it.

The advisory assigns a maximum CVSS score of 9.8 to the CWE-707 group, not a separately detailed score or attack description for CVE-2026-76443. Treat that figure as the group’s maximum, not proof of a particular exploit path for this individual CVE.

It says an unauthenticated remote attacker could send a crafted email through an affected gateway, potentially execute arbitrary SQL and gain root command execution. Cisco’s PSIRT said it became aware of active exploitation of CVE-2026-76461 in September 2026. Those details belong to CVE-2026-76461, not to CVE-2026-76443.

Which products and releases need attention?
Cisco says the hardening vulnerabilities affect Secure Email Gateway and Secure Email and Web Manager regardless of device configuration. Secure Web Appliance is not affected by this advisory. Use the row for your product; the Gateway and Manager fixed releases are different.
| Product | AsyncOS branch | First fixed release or Cisco’s direction |
|---|---|---|
| Secure Email Gateway | 15.5 and earlier | 15.5.5-014 |
| Secure Email Gateway | 16.0 | Migrate to a fixed release; Cisco does not state a specific 16.0 fixed version in this advisory. |
| Secure Email Gateway | 16.5 | 16.5.0-780 |
| Secure Email and Web Manager | 15.5 and earlier | 15.5.5-006 |
| Secure Email and Web Manager | 16.0 | Migrate to a fixed release; Cisco does not state a specific 16.0 fixed version in this advisory. |
| Secure Email and Web Manager | 16.5 | 16.5.0-429 |
These are first fixed releases as listed in Cisco’s September 2026 advisory. Before proceeding, confirm the appliance’s current branch and that its memory and hardware/software combination support the target release. Cisco also advises checking that the configuration remains supported after the upgrade.

How to install the fixed release
Cisco says to upgrade; it documents the web management interface and CLI as upgrade methods. The appliance reboots after the upgrade, so plan for the service interruption and follow the current advisory and product documentation for the specific appliance.
Recommended Free Tools
- Web interface: Open
System Administration > System Upgrade, then chooseUpgrade Options > Download and Install. - Select the applicable fixed release and the preparation options for your appliance, then choose
Proceedto start the upgrade. - CLI: Begin with the
upgradecommand and useDOWNLOADINSTALLas the upgrade procedure. Follow the prompts for the appliance and selected release. - After the appliance reboots, verify that it is running the intended fixed release and that its services and configuration are operating as expected.
Cisco says there are no workarounds that address the hardening vulnerabilities. Customers may download software only if it was procured directly from Cisco or an authorized reseller with a valid license. If you bought directly from Cisco without a service contract or cannot obtain the fixed software through your third-party point of sale, Cisco directs you to TAC; have the appliance serial number and the advisory URL ready.

What to do if you suspect a compromise
A routine software upgrade is not the same as incident recovery. Cisco’s separate incident guidance is associated with CVE-2026-76461. If you suspect that an appliance was compromised, use the appropriate recovery path rather than treating installation of a fixed release as proof that the system is clean.
Physical appliance
For a physical appliance, Cisco recommends contacting its Technical Assistance Center (TAC).

- Deploy a new virtual machine running fixed software and rebuild the configuration.
- Renew credentials and cryptographic materials, then monitor for anomalous behavior.
Cisco warns that SSH keys used between cluster members may be exposed if one member is compromised. If a compromised appliance belongs to a cluster, include every member in the restoration work.
Review logs beyond the appliance
For an investigation involving CVE-2026-76461, Cisco warns that an attacker with root access may remove or hide evidence on the appliance. Review network and firewall logs as well, looking for suspicious activity such as unexpected transfers to or from malicious IP addresses.

Choose the response based on both product and incident status
First use the product and release branch to select the correct fixed version. Separately decide whether there is a suspected compromise and, if so, whether the deployment is physical or virtual; those factors determine whether the response is a routine upgrade or forensic preservation and restoration.
