Start by identifying the distribution, release, kernel flavor, installed package build and kernel actually running on each affected system. Then check the distribution’s advisory for that exact release and package, apply its supported fix, and verify that the fixed kernel is active—or that an eligible vendor live patch is in effect. A CVE notice or successful package download alone does not prove a production system is remediated. Whether you must reboot depends on the fix and the vendor’s supported options.
1. Establish what your production systems are actually running
Build an inventory for the affected fleet before judging exposure. Record each machine’s distribution and release, kernel flavor, architecture, installed kernel package build, and currently running kernel. Include relevant workloads and kernel modules in the incident record: they can affect exposure, compatibility, rollout risk and recovery planning.

Do not decide applicability from an upstream version string alone. Distribution kernels may include vendor changes and package backports, so their version strings are not a reliable way to determine whether a vendor fix is present. The Linux kernel’s security documentation says versions for kernels that do not come from kernel.org, including distribution kernels, are not meaningful to upstream maintainers. For production decisions, the distribution’s package status is the key reference.

2. Determine whether the advisory applies to your fleet
Match the advisory to the exact distribution release, affected package and kernel flavor in your inventory. Check whether your installed build is listed as affected, whether the vendor identifies a fixed package, and whether that fix is available for your release. Ubuntu security notices, for example, identify affected releases and fixed package versions; use the corresponding vendor notice or tracker for the distribution you run.

A CVE identifier helps correlate reports, but does not establish that every Linux system is vulnerable. Kernel.org’s CVE process notes that an assigned CVE may not affect a particular system because it uses only a subset of the kernel source tree. Issues in distribution-specific kernel changes, or issues in upstream versions outside currently supported branches, may require the distribution to assess and assign a CVE. Confirm status against the vendor’s package information for your release and build.
Assess practical exposure as well as package status. Determine whether the advisory’s vulnerable component is present and reachable in your workload configuration, and consider the impact described by the vendor. Prioritize vendor-confirmed exposure and operational impact; there is no universal risk-scoring formula or response deadline that applies to every production environment.
3. Choose a supported remediation and plan the rollout
Use the distribution’s supported update path to install its fixed kernel package. Follow your organization’s change controls, and, where feasible, stage the update in a representative environment before broad deployment. Account for third-party kernel modules, workload availability and the possibility that a system may need to be recovered if the new kernel or a module fails to work as expected.

Conventional kernel update or live patch?
For eligible Ubuntu systems, Canonical Livepatch can apply selected kernel fixes while a machine continues running. It is not equivalent to installing and activating the complete fixed kernel package. Canonical says Livepatch addresses selected high- and critical-severity kernel vulnerabilities; some code cannot safely be patched while running, and live patches can contain only a subset of fixes in the corresponding kernel update.
| Decision point | Conventional fixed-kernel update | Canonical Livepatch on eligible Ubuntu systems |
|---|---|---|
| What it applies | The distribution’s fixed kernel package and its included fixes. | Selected eligible kernel fixes; Canonical says these may be only a subset of the fixes in the corresponding kernel update. |
| How the fix becomes active | A reboot is required to run the newly installed kernel. | Eligible patches can be applied while the kernel is running. Some fixes still require a conventional kernel update and reboot. |
| Other security and reboot needs | Does not, by itself, establish that other security updates are installed. | Enabling Livepatch does not enable APT security updates and does not eliminate reboot causes such as microcode, low-level libraries or firmware updates. |
| What to verify | Confirm the fixed package is installed and the machine has booted the intended kernel. | Confirm the fix is eligible and the supported live-patch state is in effect; assess other pending updates separately. |
Canonical describes Livepatch as a way to manage maintenance timing for eligible fixes, not as a blanket replacement for security updates or reboots. Check the current Canonical documentation and your service’s coverage before relying on it for a particular vulnerability.

Track verification separately from deployment. For each system, confirm that the fixed package is installed and, where the remediation requires a new kernel, that the system has booted into it. If using a vendor live-patch service, verify its supported status rather than assuming that enabling the service or downloading a patch means this particular fix has taken effect.

5. Decide whether you can defer a reboot
You can defer a reboot only when the vendor-supported remediation for the specific issue is active without one, and no other pending system change requires a reboot. A package update alone does not change the running kernel. Canonical explicitly notes that some kernel code cannot safely be live patched, and that a conventional upgrade to a newer kernel requires a reboot. Livepatch also does not cover every non-kernel update that can make a reboot necessary.
When a reboot is needed, document the remaining exposure, the reason maintenance is delayed, the systems affected and the planned maintenance window. Reassess exceptions as availability and risk change. Do not treat a live-patch service as proof that all APT security updates have been installed.
6. If your organization discovered an undisclosed kernel flaw
For a vulnerability that is not yet public, use the Linux kernel project’s private security reporting route rather than posting first to a public issue tracker or mailing list. Provide the exact affected upstream version or commit information, a reproducible report, confirmation that the flaw remains in current code, a concise impact description and reproduction steps. Include a proposed fix if one is available. Distribution kernel version designations do not give upstream maintainers a useful basis for identifying affected code.
The kernel security list is intended to coordinate fixing the issue, not general public disclosure; the kernel documentation says publicly known bugs are released immediately. The versioned policy described in that documentation allows a short delay after a robust fix to support quality assurance and large-scale rollout: up to seven calendar days, with an exceptional extension to fourteen days when agreed. These are disclosure-policy windows, not typical incident-response times or a guaranteed release date. Check the current policy with affected parties before making disclosure plans.
