What It Takes to Manufacture Drugs in Space and Bring Them Back to Earth

Making a drug in space can mean growing crystals to study a molecule, processing a material in orbit and returning it for analysis, or producing a small dose for astronauts. Those are different goals, and none means that a returned sample is automatically a finished, approved medicine. For Earth-bound products, the practical challenge is to show that microgravity produces a useful, reproducible change—and that the benefit justifies the launch, return, and development work.

What does “manufacturing drugs in space” mean?

The phrase covers several activities that differ in what they make and what happens next. Much of the work is not synthesis of a complete medicine. It is research into crystals, formulations, or production processes that could inform work on Earth.

Approach Intended output What it can establish
Protein crystallization in microgravity Crystals for structural analysis, or material that may inform formulation or delivery research Whether crystal growth under the tested conditions helps researchers study a protein or explore a product-development idea
Orbital processing followed by return A processed sample, such as a particular crystal form, for post-flight comparison and analysis Whether the material can be produced, recovered, and characterized after a specific orbital process
On-demand production for a crew A small quantity of a drug during a deep-space mission Whether a proposed system could address crew supply needs; this is distinct from producing medicines for Earth markets

The distinction matters because a promising crystal or recovered sample is an input to further development, not evidence by itself of a safe, effective, sterile, approved, or commercially scalable drug.

Why might microgravity change a drug material?

On Earth, gravity drives convection in fluids and causes denser particles or crystals to settle. In microgravity, those effects are suppressed, changing how molecules and particles move during crystal growth. Depending on the material and process, that can yield crystals with different size, shape, structure, or uniformity. It is not a universal improvement: the outcome has to be measured for the particular molecule and conditions.

Crystal properties matter because they can affect how a pharmaceutical material performs and how it can be produced. The ISS National Laboratory says more than 60% of pharmaceutical drugs are crystalline; its page does not state a publication date, so that figure should be understood as the organization’s claim rather than a dated, independently verified industry statistic.

What does it take to process a sample in orbit and bring it back?

A useful experiment starts with a defined question: for example, whether a particular crystal form or particle property changes in microgravity and remains useful after recovery. The work then has to control the process well enough that researchers can distinguish an orbital effect from differences in handling, temperature, or other conditions.

  1. Choose a gravity-sensitive target. Identify a molecule, solid form, or formulation for which gravity-driven flow or settling could plausibly affect the result. Protein crystallization, small-molecule crystal growth, and related processes are among the areas discussed by NASA and the ISS National Laboratory.
  2. Establish a ground baseline. Develop the terrestrial process and record relevant properties. Varda describes using conventional and custom crystallization equipment, analytical measurements such as XRPD, DSC, TGA, and particle-size analysis, and real-time process monitoring. These are company-described capabilities, not independent evidence that a flight will be economical.
  3. Screen whether gravity matters. Compare results under different conditions before committing to a mission. Varda describes hypergravity screening to map measures such as particle size or polymorph ratio across gravity levels. A candidate is more compelling when a measurable property responds to gravity and that change has a plausible product or process benefit.
  4. Run a controlled, automated experiment. Flight hardware must contain the material, control and record process conditions, and operate with limited crew involvement. NASA describes the ISS PIL-BOX as a cassette-based platform intended to produce uniform protein crystals. That platform is an example of crystallization research hardware, not the Astropharmacy concept described below.
  5. Return and recover the material. The sample must survive launch, orbital processing, reentry, recovery, and handling in a condition that allows meaningful testing. Recovery is part of the experiment: if the sample cannot be returned intact enough for characterization, its value for Earth-based development is limited.
  6. Compare the returned sample with controls. Analyze orbit-processed material alongside suitable ground controls. Varda lists methods including diffraction, thermal analysis, spectroscopy, microscopy, particle-size measurements, and dissolution testing. A change in crystal form or particle uniformity matters only if it is reproducible and improves a relevant product property or process.
  7. Develop the process on Earth. Any useful finding must be translated into a controllable terrestrial manufacturing approach and supported by evidence appropriate to the product. NASA describes possible use of seed crystals and terrestrial manufacturing applications for space-grown crystal research; those are development possibilities, not proof of a finished product.

What has actually been demonstrated?

ISS protein-crystal research

NASA says the International Space Station has hosted hundreds of protein crystal-growth experiments. Such work can support structural biology and drug discovery, and may inform formulation or administration approaches. The ISS National Laboratory’s page identifies Keytruda as one therapeutic product crystallized in space at the time the page was written and describes small-molecule crystallization as an opportunity. That page also says small-molecule active pharmaceutical ingredient crystals had not been generated on the station. Its statement should not be conflated with work on a different orbital platform.

Varda’s returned ritonavir material

In a company summary dated March 20, 2024, Varda reported recovering metastable ritonavir Form III generated in orbit. It also reported excellent stability in testing of ritonavir Forms I, II, and III and amorphous samples, including passive controls. This is a specific reported result about sample generation, recovery, and stability. It does not establish patient benefit, drug approval, cost-effectiveness, routine commercial production, or that every material will survive a return mission in the same way.

The lens is built to withstand debris and unexpected contact while maintaining clear visibility in active shop conditions. Use them as dust goggles, work goggles, over glasses goggles, or mowing goggles.

Astropharmacy for deep-space crews

Astropharmacy addresses a separate problem: supplying small quantities of biologics during long missions beyond low Earth orbit. A 2025 NASA Technical Reports Server abstract gives six months as the shelf life of biologics even when refrigerated in the context of its project rationale. It describes engineered Bacillus subtilis spores and custom microfluidic hardware for on-demand production, and reports that seven small peptide drugs had been expressed in B. subtilis at the time of the abstract. These are project-reported details, not evidence that an autonomous, flight-ready pharmacy has been deployed. The proposed system is about crew supply, not manufacturing medicines to bring back to Earth.

What would make space processing worthwhile?

Orbit is useful only if a target benefits enough from gravity-dependent processing to offset the extra complexity. The relevant comparison is not simply whether a crystal can be grown in space, but whether an orbital process produces a material or process advantage that can be repeated and developed on Earth.

  • Meaningful product property: Does the observed change improve a relevant measure, such as uniformity, stability, dissolution, or manufacturability?
  • Reproducibility: Can the result be produced consistently, including across batches and after recovery?
  • Operational feasibility: Can the process be automated, controlled, safely contained, and returned with adequate sample integrity?
  • Scale-up path: Can the finding inform a terrestrial process rather than remain a one-off orbital result?
  • Evidence and cost: Does the potential benefit justify launch, return, analysis, and the further development needed to establish product quality and regulatory compliance?

The available descriptions do not provide a standardized cost or throughput comparison across approaches, so there is no sound basis here for ranking providers on those measures.

How do manufacturing rules apply?

After a material returns, it still needs the ordinary scientific and development work required to show what it is, how it behaves, and whether it can be made reproducibly. A successful recovery or stability test does not establish sterility, good manufacturing practice compliance, safety, efficacy, or approval for human use.

The FDA’s March 2023 ICH Q13 guidance addresses scientific and regulatory considerations for continuous manufacturing of drug substances and products. It is relevant background for process control on Earth, but it is not a space-specific approval ruling and does not, by itself, settle the requirements for an orbital manufacturing site or a returned space-processed drug.
