Resize each image to an Apple-approved pixel size for the iPad display group you support, keep its portrait or landscape orientation, and export an opaque JPEG, JPG, or PNG. There is no single universal iPad screenshot size: the correct dimensions depend on the display group listed in Apple’s current Screenshot specifications.
Choose the correct iPad screenshot size first
Start with the display group, not the marketing name of a particular iPad. Apple’s table groups devices by 13-inch, 12.9-inch, 11-inch, 10.5-inch and 9.7-inch displays, and some device families overlap groups. Select the group Apple lists for the target device, then use one of that group’s accepted pixel dimensions.

Apple can change device groupings or accepted dimensions. Check the live specification immediately before preparing a release rather than relying on a saved template. The 13-inch group is required for an app that runs on iPad; other groups can use Apple’s documented scaling behavior when you do not provide a separate accepted-size file.
Resize an image without distorting the interface
- Identify the target group. In Apple’s specification table, find the display group associated with the devices your app supports.
- Choose orientation. Decide whether the listing will show portrait or landscape screenshots. Do not rotate a portrait capture into a landscape canvas merely to meet a dimension; capture or crop it in the orientation users will see.
- Create an exact pixel canvas. Set the editor’s width and height to one accepted pair. For example, a 13-inch portrait canvas can be 2064 × 2752 or 2048 × 2732.
- Fit the source screenshot proportionally. Scale uniformly until the important interface is inside the canvas. If the aspect ratios differ, crop excess edges or add an intentional background; never stretch the UI horizontally or vertically.
- Check legibility. Inspect navigation labels, charts, keyboard text and other fine details at 100% view. A technically valid file can still be a poor store image if text becomes too small after cropping.
- Flatten transparency. Place the screenshot over an opaque background and remove the alpha channel. Apple does not accept transparency or alpha channels for these images.
- Export a supported format. Save as
.jpeg,.jpgor.png. Keep the pixel dimensions exact after export; some editors change dimensions when optimizing files.
Apple’s specification defines the dimensions and file constraints, not a particular editing application. Any editor that can set an exact pixel canvas, preserve aspect ratio and remove alpha is suitable.

When one screenshot can cover several iPad sizes
You do not always need a manually resized file for every display group. When the interface is the same across device sizes and localizations, Apple allows the highest required resolution to scale down automatically. For example, a valid 13-inch asset can supply the fallback for 12.9-inch and 11-inch groups as described in the specification.
Provide custom files when the composition, typography or localization needs to differ at another size. App Store Connect’s Media Manager is the place to maintain device-size and localization-specific assets. A custom 10.5-inch image can preserve a better crop than a generic scaled image when your design has edge-to-edge artwork or small controls.
- Use the highest required resolution when the same composition works everywhere.
- Add a group-specific image when scaling would make text or controls too small.
- Create localized assets when translated text changes line breaks or the visual hierarchy.
Upload screenshots in App Store Connect
- Open App Store Connect and select My Apps, then choose the app.
- Open the relevant app version and its platform section, select iPad, and choose the screenshot area.
- Upload one to ten images in
.jpeg,.jpgor.pngformat. Confirm that each file has the intended pixel dimensions and no alpha channel. - Arrange the images in the order in which you want users to see them, then save the version metadata.
Apple lists these version statuses as eligible for screenshot uploads: Prepare for Submission, Invalid Binary, Rejected, Metadata Rejected and Developer Rejected. If a version has already been submitted and approved, Apple requires creating a new version before its screenshots can be changed. Automate validation and uploads with Apple’s API
For a release pipeline, treat each screenshot as an App Store Connect screenshot resource tied to a locale and display target. Apple’s App Screenshots API reference warns that some required sizes must be supplied before submission; otherwise App Store Connect can return an error at submission time.

A practical pipeline should validate the following before calling the API:
- Width and height exactly match an accepted pair for the selected display group and orientation.
- The file extension and encoded format are JPEG, JPG or PNG.
- The image is opaque and contains no alpha channel.
- The locale and display target match the resource you are creating.
- No more than ten screenshots are assigned to the relevant upload set.
Keep Apple’s current specification as the validation source. Hard-coding an old list of dimensions can break a submission when Apple adds or changes a device group.
Troubleshooting rejected or poor-looking screenshots
“Invalid screenshot size”
The file probably uses a nearby but unaccepted dimension, or width and height were reversed. Recheck the display group and orientation in Apple’s table, then set the canvas to the exact listed pair. Do not infer a size from an iPad’s diagonal measurement.
The image looks stretched
Uniform scaling was not used. Undo the resize, lock the aspect ratio, and crop the excess instead of changing one dimension independently. If cropping removes essential controls, recapture the screen with a composition that fits the target ratio.

App Store Connect reports transparency or alpha
Flatten the image against an opaque background and export again. Some PNG workflows retain an alpha channel even when the canvas appears white; inspect the file’s color or channel settings before uploading.
The screenshot is accepted but text is unreadable
Acceptance checks dimensions and format, not presentation quality. Rebuild the screenshot at the highest practical resolution, avoid enlarging a low-resolution source, and use a custom device-size asset through Media Manager when automatic scaling makes labels too small.
A required device is missing at submission
Apple may require a screenshot resource for a display target even when the app record appears to contain other iPad images. Compare your upload set with the current specification and API display target, then add an accepted-size asset before submitting.
I cannot edit screenshots on the approved version
That is expected after approval. Create a new app version, add the replacement screenshots there, and submit the new version.

Performance, quality and file-management practices
- Keep a master. Save an uncompressed or high-quality source separately from store exports so you can produce another accepted dimension later.
- Name files by target. Include display group, orientation and locale in filenames, such as
ipad-13in-portrait-en-US.png. - Validate before upload. A small script or image tool can check dimensions, format and alpha status in a build step, avoiding manual retries in App Store Connect.
- Review scaled fallbacks. Apple’s automatic scaling is convenient, but inspect the resulting composition in the product page preview when the screenshot contains fine text or edge-aligned artwork.
- Keep localization variants intentional. If translated copy changes the layout, upload a custom localized asset instead of assuming the source-language image will remain legible.

Can I submit both portrait and landscape screenshots?
Yes. Upload images in the orientations that represent your app’s actual experiences, using an accepted dimension for each orientation and display target.
Should I always upload a separate image for every iPad group?
