How to Set Screen Resolution in Power Automate Desktop (Attended and Unattended)

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

The correct method depends on how the desktop flow runs. For an attended flow, add the Workstation Set screen resolution action. For an unattended run, set Display resolution for unattended runs in the desktop flow’s properties, or define a machine-wide default in the Windows registry. The attended action does not reliably change resolution in an unattended remote desktop session where the user cannot manually change display settings.

Choose the method that matches your run

Method Use it for Scope Important limitation
Workstation Set screen resolution Attended desktop flows The selected monitor while the flow runs Requires monitor number, width, height, bit count and frequency. In documented remote sessions where users cannot manually change resolution, it has no effect.
Flow property Unattended runs One desktop flow Overrides registry settings. The parent flow’s value also applies to child flows and reused Windows sessions.
Windows registry Unattended machine defaults Machine-wide Per-flow settings take precedence. A corresponding 64-bit key can override the documented 32-bit location.
UIFlowService.exe.config Older unattended configurations Service configuration Deprecated and liable to be overwritten by upgrades.

Set resolution in an attended desktop flow

An attended flow runs in a user session where Power Automate Desktop can interact with the display. Use the Workstation actions rather than changing Windows settings manually in every run.

1. Read the current resolution when you need to restore it

  1. Open the desktop flow in Power Automate Desktop.
  2. Add the Workstation Get screen resolution action.
  3. Choose the monitor and store the returned width, height, bit count and frequency in variables.

Capturing the existing values first is important when the flow should leave the workstation unchanged after it finishes.

2. Add Set screen resolution

  1. In the actions pane, open Workstation and drag Set screen resolution into the flow.
  2. Select the monitor number.
  3. Enter the desired width and height in pixels.
  4. Set the color bit count and refresh frequency required by that monitor.
  5. Use Available screen resolutions to inspect values supported by the selected screen instead of guessing a combination.

Use a mode that the physical or virtual monitor actually supports. An unsupported refresh rate or color depth can make the action fail or leave the display unchanged.

3. Restore the original mode

Place a second Set screen resolution action near the end of the flow and populate it with the variables returned by Get screen resolution. If the flow has failure branches, put the restore action in the cleanup path as well, so an error does not leave the user’s desktop at the temporary mode.

Attended and remote-session constraints

For a cloud-triggered flow that uses this action, Microsoft requires a console-session connection in which the user can manually change resolution. In an unattended scenario using a remote desktop client, the action has no effect when that manual change is unavailable. If the flow is unattended, configure its resolution before the run instead of relying on this action.

Set resolution for an unattended run

The per-flow setting is the preferred approach when different flows need different display modes.

  1. In the Power Automate portal, open the desktop flow’s details.
  2. Choose Edit.
  3. Open Flow properties.
  4. Turn on Display resolution for unattended runs.
  5. Select a listed resolution or enter a custom width and height.
  6. Save the flow and run it again on the unattended machine.

Microsoft recommends using the resolution of the machine on which the flow was developed. This helps keep coordinates, application layout and image assets consistent between design and execution.

What the flow setting controls

  • The flow property’s value takes precedence over registry resolution settings.
  • If a parent desktop flow calls child desktop flows, the parent’s selected resolution applies to all of them.
  • The setting also applies when an existing Windows session is reused.

A per-flow value is therefore the best choice when you need a predictable result without changing every unattended flow on the machine.

Configure a machine-wide registry default

Registry configuration is useful when you administer an unattended machine and want a default for flows that do not specify their own property. Microsoft documents this approach for Power Automate flows version 2.35 and later.

Create the Screen key if it does not exist, then create these DWORD values using Decimal as the base:

Value Purpose Example from Microsoft’s documentation
ScreenResolutionEnabled Enables the custom settings when set to 1 1
Width Screen width in pixels 1920
Height Screen height in pixels 1080
Scale Display scale percentage 100

The 1920 × 1080 and 100% values are examples, not universal requirements. Use values appropriate for the machine and for the application your flow automates.

Check both registry views

The installer writes the documented settings in the 32-bit path. If corresponding values exist at the 64-bit location, Microsoft says they take precedence:

When a registry setting appears to be ignored, inspect both paths for duplicate or conflicting values. Back up the relevant keys before editing, and avoid leaving contradictory configurations in place. A flow property still overrides either registry location.

Apply and verify

After editing the registry, start a new unattended run and verify the actual session rather than assuming the values were accepted. Capture a failure screenshot or inspect the application’s layout if available. If the result differs from the configured mode, check for a per-flow property and for values in the 64-bit path before changing anything else.

Why resolution and display scale affect automation

Resolution changes the amount of content visible and can move controls. Display scale (DPI) changes the effective size of text and controls even when pixel dimensions look correct. Image-recognition actions are especially sensitive: Microsoft’s guidance calls for the target screen to use the source screen’s exact resolution and the same DPI scaling.

Designing for image recognition

  • Develop and run at the same width and height whenever possible.
  • Match the display scale as well as the pixel resolution.
  • Capture the current values before a temporary change if the flow must restore them.
  • Prefer stable UI selectors over screen coordinates when the application supports them.

An unattended flow can fail even when its selectors are unchanged if an application opens maximized at a different size, if DPI awareness changes its layout, or if a dialog appears outside the expected region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Coordinate, window and DPI checks

When diagnosing a mismatch, compare the attended and unattended sessions’ width, height and scale. Also check whether the target application is DPI-aware, whether its window is maximized or restored, and whether the same monitor is being targeted. A failure screenshot can reveal a clipped button, a shifted dialog or a different zoom level that the selector log alone does not explain.

Common problems and fixes

The action runs but the resolution does not change

Likely cause: the flow is running in an unattended or remote session where manual display changes are unavailable.

Fix: set Display resolution for unattended runs in Flow properties. If you need a machine default, configure the registry and check both the 32-bit and 64-bit paths.

The registry values are ignored

Likely causes: a per-flow property is overriding them, the values were entered as hexadecimal instead of decimal, or a conflicting 64-bit key exists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Fix: inspect the flow property first, confirm each DWORD uses Decimal, then compare both registry locations and remove conflicting duplicates after backing up the keys.

Image recognition works attended but fails unattended

Likely cause: resolution, DPI scale, window state or application rendering differs between sessions.

Fix: make the unattended resolution and scale match the development machine, verify the application’s DPI behavior and window state, and review the failure screenshot. Re-capture image targets only after the runtime environment is stable.

A child flow uses the wrong resolution

Likely cause: the parent flow’s resolution setting governs child flows.

Fix: change the property on the parent flow and test the complete call chain. Do not expect a child flow’s separate expectation to override the parent’s selected value.

The setting changes after an upgrade

Likely cause: the deprecated UIFlowService.exe.config method was used. Upgrades can overwrite that file with defaults.

Fix: migrate to the per-flow property or the documented registry configuration, then verify a new unattended run.

A repeatable setup checklist

  1. Identify whether the run is attended, unattended, cloud-triggered or using a reused Windows session.
  2. For attended work, add Get screen resolution, then Set screen resolution with a supported monitor mode.
  3. For unattended work, set the flow property before considering a registry default.
  4. Match both resolution and display scale to the development environment for image recognition.
  5. Check parent-flow inheritance when child flows are involved.
  6. Record the actual runtime mode and inspect failure screenshots when the layout differs.
  7. Keep a backup before editing registry keys and avoid duplicate 32-bit/64-bit settings.

Or skip the browser setup

ScreenshotNeo is separate from Power Automate Desktop’s display-resolution controls: it captures a web page through an API, so it cannot change the Windows resolution of your unattended PAD machine. It is useful when the goal is to obtain a clean, repeatable image of a web page without maintaining browser automation.

One GET request returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. Before capture, ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. Frequently Asked Questions

Does changing the flow resolution change my physical monitor permanently?

No. The unattended setting controls the Windows session used by the run. An attended flow can restore the original monitor values with a second Set screen resolution action.

Should I use 100% display scale for every flow?

No. The documented 100% value is only an example. Match the scale used by the application and by the machine on which image targets were created.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I configure different unattended resolutions for child flows?

The parent flow’s selected unattended resolution applies to its child flows, so configure the value at the parent when the call chain must be consistent.

Is the old UIFlowService.exe.config approach recommended for a new deployment?

No. Microsoft marks it deprecated because upgrades can overwrite the file. Use the flow property or registry configuration instead.
