To make a YouTube thumbnail online, choose the right format for a standard video or a Short, design it in an online editor such as Canva, export it as a JPG or PNG within YouTube’s size limit, then upload it in YouTube Studio. For eligible standard videos, use Studio’s thumbnail test to compare options based on watch time—not just clicks. Shorts use a different aspect ratio, and custom-thumbnail access for them is still rolling out.

Choose the right thumbnail format first

YouTube’s specifications differ according to what the thumbnail represents. For standard video thumbnails, YouTube recommends a 16:9 image at 3840 × 2160 pixels, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. For Shorts, the recommended uploaded image is vertical: 9:16 at 2160 × 3840 pixels, with a minimum height of 640 pixels. YouTube’s current specifications also list a 1:1 ratio for podcast playlist thumbnails. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of better reach. See YouTube’s custom-thumbnail specifications, accessed September 29, 2026.

Use Recommended size Aspect ratio Minimum dimension
Standard video 3840 × 2160 px 16:9 640 px minimum width
Short 2160 × 3840 px 9:16 640 px minimum height
Podcast playlist Not stated in YouTube Help 1:1 Not stated in YouTube Help

The recommended sizes and minimum dimensions above are YouTube Help specifications accessed September 29, 2026. YouTube recommends making the image as large as possible, but the upload limit still applies: video thumbnails are limited to 2 MB when uploaded on mobile, while the desktop limit is 50 MB for video, Shorts and podcast thumbnails. The file format for video thumbnails should be JPG or PNG.

Check how a vertical video will appear

A vertical video may not show its 16:9 custom thumbnail everywhere. YouTube says that on Home, Explore and subscription pages, a 16:9 custom thumbnail for a vertical video is replaced by an automatically generated 4:5 thumbnail. The custom thumbnail remains visible in the watch feed, watch history and non-mobile platforms. If appearance on those surfaces matters, check them after publishing rather than assuming the uploaded image will display identically everywhere.

Create the image in an online editor

An online editor is useful when you want control over the canvas, text, image adjustments or a reusable design without installing desktop software. Canva’s online YouTube thumbnail maker offers a drag-and-drop editor, templates, brightness and contrast adjustments, reusable filters, collaboration, and JPG or PNG downloads. It is one option, not a required tool; YouTube Studio also offers generated suggestions.

  1. Start with the correct canvas. Choose a 16:9 layout for a standard video or 9:16 for a Short. If you use a template, confirm its dimensions before designing; do not assume every template labeled “YouTube” is for the format you need.
  2. Build around what the video actually contains. Choose an image or frame that accurately represents the video. Add text or other visual elements only when they clarify the subject. YouTube’s platform specifications do not establish a visual style that guarantees more clicks or views.
  3. Check legibility at a small display size. A thumbnail is often encountered among many others. As a practical design check, zoom out or preview it small and make sure the main image and any words remain understandable. This is an editorial usability check, not a documented YouTube ranking factor.
  4. Export and inspect the file. Download as JPG or PNG, then check the dimensions and file size. If a mobile upload is planned for a standard video thumbnail, keep it at or below 2 MB; desktop video thumbnail uploads allow up to 50 MB. The applicable desktop limit for a Short thumbnail is also 50 MB.

Use YouTube’s suggestions when you do not need a separate editor

For standard videos, Studio may offer “Get suggestions” during thumbnail selection. YouTube also announced on July 24, 2026, that Ask Studio can suggest thumbnails for long-form videos based on the video’s transcript and themes. These native options can reduce the need to prepare an image elsewhere, though a separate editor provides more direct control over layout, text and image adjustments. The announcement describes the rollout in YouTube’s July 24, 2026 update.

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio on a computer and open Content.
  2. Choose the video you want to update.
  3. Under Thumbnail, choose Upload file to select your image, or choose Get suggestions if available.
  4. Save the change. YouTube says a thumbnail update may take time to appear, so do not treat an unchanged preview immediately after saving as proof that the upload failed.

Custom thumbnails require a verified YouTube account. YouTube also applies daily upload limits that can vary by region or channel history. If the custom-thumbnail option is unavailable, check account verification and any account-level restrictions rather than repeatedly trying to upload the same file.

Uploading a custom thumbnail for a Short

Shorts access is more conditional than standard-video access. YouTube Help says custom Shorts uploads are currently available in Studio on a computer and require a verified account. Separately, YouTube’s July 24, 2026 announcement said YouTube Partner Program creators could start uploading custom thumbnails for Shorts, with availability planned to expand over time. The announcement also described choosing from three suggested frames on desktop and selecting a frame on mobile. Because the rollout is changing, check the controls available on your own channel instead of assuming every creator or app has the same options.

Optimize with YouTube’s native thumbnail test

For an eligible standard video, YouTube Studio lets creators test up to three title and/or thumbnail options. This is more useful than guessing which version will work, but the platform’s outcome is not a simple CTR contest. YouTube says its tests are optimized for overall watch time over metrics such as click-through rate. Results can report a winner, that variants performed the same, or an inconclusive outcome; tests can take days and up to two weeks to complete. Access requires advanced features, and Shorts are not eligible. See YouTube Help: A/B test titles & thumbnails.

  1. On a desktop, open YouTube Studio and select an eligible standard video.
  2. Open the title and thumbnail testing control and add up to three options. You can test thumbnails, titles, or combinations of the two.
  3. Make the options meaningfully distinct enough to test an actual choice, while keeping each one representative of the video.
  4. Let the test run and review the result Studio reports. Do not declare a winner from a short-term CTR fluctuation when YouTube’s native test reports its result using watch time.

A test can be inconclusive or show that options performed similarly. That is a valid result: it means the test did not establish a clear winner under the platform’s method, not that a particular design formula has been proven. No visual treatment can be promised to raise clicks or views on every channel.

Keep thumbnails within YouTube’s rules

Custom thumbnails must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines. YouTube lists nudity or sexually provocative content, hate speech, violence, and harmful or dangerous content among reasons a thumbnail may be rejected or lead to a strike. If a thumbnail is rejected, revise the image to comply with the rules rather than repeatedly submitting a substantially unchanged version. Upload availability can also be affected by daily limits, which may vary by region or channel history. The policy and limits are covered on YouTube’s custom-thumbnail Help page.

Troubleshooting common thumbnail problems

  • The upload control is missing: Custom thumbnails require account verification. For Shorts, availability is also subject to the current rollout; check Studio on a computer and the options available to your channel.
  • The file is rejected: Confirm it is JPG or PNG, uses the intended aspect ratio, and is under the upload limit for the device. Desktop video thumbnail uploads allow up to 50 MB; mobile video thumbnail uploads allow up to 2 MB.
  • The image looks cropped or different on a phone: For vertical videos, YouTube may substitute an auto-generated 4:5 thumbnail on Home, Explore and subscription pages. Check the relevant display surfaces.
  • The old thumbnail still appears after saving: YouTube says changes may take time to appear. Allow time for the update to propagate before treating it as a failed save.
  • A test has no clear winner: Studio can report the variants performed the same or that the result is inconclusive. Do not relabel that result as a CTR win; the native test is optimized for watch time.
  • A thumbnail is rejected or triggers a restriction: Review the Community Guidelines categories YouTube identifies, including sexual content, hate speech, violence and harmful or dangerous content, then replace the image with a compliant one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use any online image editor to make a YouTube thumbnail?

Yes, provided you can set the appropriate canvas and export a compliant JPG or PNG within the upload limit. YouTube’s specifications govern the upload, not which editor you use.

Can YouTube test thumbnails on Shorts?

No. YouTube’s native title and thumbnail testing is not available for Shorts.
