How to Resize, Crop, and Transcode Videos

Resize to change frame dimensions, crop to remove image area, and transcode to change codecs or encoding settings. Follow a workflow for HandBrake, FFmpeg, and YouTube exports.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resizing changes a video’s frame dimensions, cropping removes image area, and transcoding re-encodes the video or changes its format and encoding settings. You can combine them, but choose the output based on where the video will play or be uploaded. To preserve the whole picture, scale it to fit; to fill a differently shaped frame, crop and check that important content remains visible.

What resizing, cropping, and transcoding change

Resize: change the frame dimensions

Resizing scales the picture to different pixel dimensions. Keep the proportions constrained unless you intentionally want to stretch the image; otherwise people and objects can look unnaturally wide or tall. HandBrake provides automatic or custom sizing and resolution limits, while FFmpeg’s scale filter can scale proportionally using the input display aspect ratio. HandBrake’s resizing guide and FFmpeg’s scale-filter documentation describe these controls.

Crop: remove image area

Cropping cuts pixels from one or more edges. It can remove black bars that are part of the picture or reframe footage to fill a different aspect ratio, but it may also cut off a face, text, or other important detail. HandBrake’s auto-crop is a best guess: inspect the preview and adjust manually if necessary.

Transcode: re-encode or change media settings

Transcoding decodes and re-encodes media streams. Depending on the settings, it can change codec, container, bitrate or quality target, and sometimes frame rate or resolution. Re-encoding is not lossless by default, so a smaller output may lose source detail. FFmpeg documents reading, filtering, and transcoding media; HandBrake’s official presets offer starting points for devices, web playback, and general use.

Choose fit or fill before exporting

When the source and destination have different shapes, decide whether preserving the entire image or filling the destination frame matters more. Scaling the whole source to fit preserves all of it, but may leave unused space. Filling the new frame generally requires cropping some image area. Preview the result rather than assuming the crop will be safe.

  • Fit: preserve the whole picture and accept unused space where aspect ratios differ.
  • Fill: use a crop to cover the destination frame, then check edges and subjects for lost content.

Do not resize by independently changing width and height unless stretching is intentional. Avoid unnecessary upscaling: HandBrake’s resizing guide says it is not recommended in general, though it notes some cases where it can be useful, such as uploading to YouTube.

A reliable workflow for resizing, cropping, and transcoding

  1. Identify the destination. Check where the video will be played or uploaded, its required dimensions or aspect ratio, and whether compatibility, quality, or file size is the priority. If you do not know the destination requirements, retaining the source aspect ratio and frame rate is a conservative starting point; use a broadly compatible preset and confirm its limits.
  2. Inspect the source. Note the pixel dimensions, display aspect ratio, frame rate, and whether the image contains black bars, interlacing, or non-square pixels. These properties affect whether to scale, crop, deinterlace, or preserve metadata. Adobe distinguishes frame size and frame rate from pixel aspect ratio; a mismatch can distort the image. See Adobe’s Premiere export settings documentation.
  3. Choose fit or fill. If the output shape differs, decide whether to retain all source image area or crop to cover the frame. Preview the crop and verify important content is not cut off.
  4. Set output dimensions. Choose a resolution limit or custom dimensions, keeping proportions unless you deliberately want a stretched image. Do not assume a preset allows every resolution or frame rate: HandBrake notes that presets can cap these values.
  5. Select a codec and container for the destination. A preset is a useful starting point, not a substitute for checking the destination’s requirements. Choose encoding quality or bitrate according to the trade-off between detail, file size, and export time.
  6. Preview and inspect the export. Check the frame edges and subjects for crop loss, look for stretching, and confirm audio, colors, frame rate, and playback. Adobe says its maximum-render-quality setting can help preserve details and avoid aliasing when scaling to a different frame size, but can substantially increase export time, especially without a supported GPU.

Do it with HandBrake

HandBrake is a graphical option when you want to inspect a preview and choose a preset or custom dimensions. Exact interface labels can vary by version, so use the current HandBrake documentation for the controls in your release.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the source video and choose a destination preset as a starting point.
  2. Open the dimensions or sizing controls. Set a resolution limit or custom output dimensions, keeping the aspect ratio constrained if you want to avoid stretching.
  3. Review the crop controls and preview. Adjust auto-crop manually if it removes useful image area; choose no crop if you need to preserve the full frame.
  4. Choose an output format and encoding settings appropriate for the destination. Presets may limit resolution or frame rate.
  5. Start the encode, then play the resulting file and check its framing, sound, and compatibility in the intended player or upload workflow.

HandBrake’s guides cover resizing and official presets.

Do it with FFmpeg

FFmpeg is a command-line option for repeatable conversions. This example scales a source to fit within 1280×720 without enlarging it, preserving the display aspect ratio, then encodes H.264 video and AAC audio in an MP4 container. It does not crop to fill a 16:9 frame; if the source has a different shape, the output image can have dimensions below one of those limits.

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "scale=w=1280:h=720:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease" -c:v libx264 -crf 23 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.mp4

The example’s codec and quality settings are starting points, not universal destination requirements. Confirm support and quality for your use case, then inspect the output. FFmpeg’s scale filter documentation explains proportional scaling and its options; the FFmpeg documentation covers input, filtering, and transcoding.

Crop with FFmpeg

To crop to a centered 16:9 frame and then scale to 1280×720, a filter chain can use the crop and scale filters. This example assumes the crop should be centered; inspect the result because a centered crop may remove important content.

ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "crop='ih*16/9:ih':(iw-ow)/2:0,scale=1280:720" -c:v libx264 -crf 23 -preset medium -c:a aac -b:a 128k output.mp4

This crop expression is intended for a source wider than 16:9. For a taller or otherwise differently shaped source, determine a crop that fits the actual input and desired composition before encoding. FFmpeg filter expressions depend on the source dimensions; check the filter documentation if the command reports invalid or out-of-range crop dimensions.

YouTube export settings are platform-specific

For YouTube uploads, its recommended encoding guidance lists MP4, H.264, progressive scan, and matching the recorded frame rate where possible. For SDR, it recommends BT.709. Its bitrate recommendations vary by resolution and frame-rate class; these are YouTube recommendations, not universal rules or a guarantee of a particular quality or file size. YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings lists:

Resolution Standard frame rates (24, 25, or 30 fps) High frame rates (48, 50, or 60 fps)
1080p 8 Mbps 12 Mbps
2160p 35–45 Mbps 53–68 Mbps

YouTube describes 16:9 as the standard computer aspect ratio, but its player adapts to vertical and square video. It advises against adding padding or black bars directly to a video because they can interfere with dynamic player adaptation. Do not convert every vertical or square source to 16:9 automatically; use the actual delivery need. See YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.

Trade-offs that affect quality, time, and file size

  • Crop versus retain: a crop can fill a differently shaped frame or remove encoded bars, but permanently discards image area.
  • Scale versus detail: downscaling reduces dimensions; upscaling cannot restore detail absent from the source. Adobe’s maximum-render-quality option may help with scaled output, with potentially much longer export times.
  • Quality versus size: re-encoding can reduce file size, but is not lossless by default. A lower bitrate or more aggressive quality setting can discard detail.
  • Compatibility versus settings freedom: a destination-oriented preset can be a convenient starting point, but may cap resolution or frame rate. Confirm the actual requirements for the destination.
  • Frame rate: changing it is a separate choice from changing frame dimensions. Where possible, preserve the recorded rate unless the destination or project requires otherwise.

Common problems and fixes

The output looks stretched

The width and height may have been changed independently, or the pixel aspect ratio may not match the intended display. Constrain proportions when scaling and inspect the source’s display and pixel aspect ratios before encoding.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The crop cuts off a person, title, or object

Auto-crop or a centered crop may be removing useful content. Inspect the preview, reduce or reposition the crop, or choose fit instead of fill.

The file is still too large

Resolution, bitrate or quality target, codec, frame rate, and content all affect output size. Choose a smaller resolution or a more size-efficient encoding setting only if the destination supports it, then check the result for visible quality loss. A smaller file is not guaranteed to retain all source detail.

The preset does not produce the requested dimensions or frame rate

Some presets cap resolution or frame rate. Use custom sizing or settings where available, and verify the destination’s accepted formats and limits rather than assuming the preset is unrestricted.

The export takes much longer after enabling maximum render quality

Adobe notes that maximum render quality can substantially extend export time, especially without a supported GPU. Use it when scaling quality matters, then compare the exported result and time cost for your project.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The uploaded video has black bars or displays unexpectedly

Check whether the bars are encoded into the source image or added by the player. YouTube’s player adapts to vertical and square videos, and YouTube advises against baking padding or black bars into the file. Crop only when removing bars does not remove actual image content.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I resize a video without changing its aspect ratio?

Yes. Keep proportions constrained while scaling so the image does not stretch; a different-shaped destination may still require unused space or cropping.

Does transcoding always reduce quality?

No, but re-encoding is not lossless by default. The result depends on the encoding settings and whether the output is re-encoded.
