Optimize WordPress images by starting with dimensions suited to where they will appear, then choosing an appropriate format and compression level. WordPress creates image sizes registered by its core and theme; it can also generate WebP versions when the server supports the required image-processing capability. For older media, extra compression controls or formats such as AVIF, a plugin may be useful. Always check the result on the actual page and host.
1. Start with images sized for their display
Uploading an image much larger than its displayed dimensions can waste storage and bandwidth. First identify how wide the image appears in the post, page, or layout, and prepare an appropriately sized source rather than routinely uploading oversized originals.

WordPress generates registered image sub-sizes when an image is uploaded. Themes and other components can register additional sizes, so the variants available on a site depend on its configuration. By default, generated sub-sizes use the original format. See the WordPress Theme Handbook for the explanation of image sizes; it notes that WordPress 5.8 introduced WebP support.

2. Decide whether native WebP handling is enough
WordPress documents WebP support, and the WordPress Performance team described generating WebP versions of uploaded JPEGs and their sub-sizes while retaining the original JPEGs when the server has the necessary capability. Its March 28, 2022 post reports that WebP images generated by WordPress were almost always smaller than JPEGs, with an average file-size reduction of about 30% at the same visual quality. That is the team’s reported average, not a guaranteed saving for a particular site or image. Read “Enabling WebP by default”.

Use native handling if the resulting sizes and formats meet your needs. Consider a plugin if you need explicit compression controls, resizing limits, AVIF conversion, or bulk processing of images already in the media library. Format conversion is not automatically an improvement in every case: compare image quality at the size visitors will actually see.
3. Choose a plugin against your requirements
Plugin listings describe different feature sets, not independent quality or speed rankings. Check the current listing and settings before installing, since plugin features can change.

| Option | Formats and workflow described | Sizing and controls | Processing and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elementor Image Optimization | JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, and GIF; automatic processing on upload, plus bulk or individual processing. | Adjustable maximum width; the listing gives 1920 pixels as the default. | The WordPress.org listing says optimization uses a third-party service operated by Elementor. |
| WebP Image Optimization | Automatic WebP or AVIF conversion. | Resizing and compression controls are described. | The listing requires GD with WebP support. |
| Images to WebP | Conversion and delivery of WebP images. | Consult the listing for the current options. | Delivery depends on server configuration. The listing warns that some combined Nginx/Apache setups may require host-specific handling of rewrite behavior. |
Before choosing, check whether the plugin handles the formats you use, processes new uploads and existing files, allows a maximum dimension, offers lossy or lossless controls, and processes files locally or through an external service. Confirm whether it depends on GD or Imagick and whether your host can deliver converted files correctly.

- Check the host first. Ask your host or inspect the WordPress media/image-processing environment to confirm support for the chosen format and required GD or Imagick capability.
- Back up the site. Keep a restorable copy of the media library and database before bulk conversion or changing delivery rules.
- Test a representative sample. Include different image types and sizes, and review each at its rendered size. Look for visible artifacts, unexpected resizing, or missing images.
- Run bulk processing only after the sample works. Follow the plugin’s own instructions, and avoid interrupting a batch job if its interface indicates it is still processing.
- Check the public page and actual delivered format. Verify that the image loads on the live site and that the expected format is served; successful conversion alone does not prove delivery is configured correctly.
5. Verify appearance and compatibility
Compression trades file size against image fidelity. Lossy compression discards some image information; lossless options preserve the source more closely but may yield smaller savings. There is no universally best quality setting in the cited documentation. Review fine detail, text, gradients, and transparency at the size visitors see, and compare the result with the original before applying a setting broadly.

Server support and rewrite configuration matter as much as conversion. If the site runs a combined Nginx/Apache setup, consult the host before applying rewrite rules; the Images to WebP listing specifically flags that some such environments need host-specific handling. Test representative pages after any delivery change.
6. Troubleshoot common problems
- Conversion fails or WebP is unavailable: check whether the host’s GD or Imagick build supports the format required by the plugin. The WebP Image Optimization listing, for example, specifies GD with WebP support.
- Converted files exist but visitors still receive the old format: verify the plugin’s delivery configuration, server rewrite behavior, and any caching layer. Clear relevant caches and retest the public page.
- Images disappear after enabling delivery rules: revert the rule or plugin change and ask the host to confirm the correct configuration for its web-server combination. Do not assume an Apache rule works unchanged on a combined Nginx/Apache host.
- Images look soft or show artifacts: reduce compression or use a less aggressive setting, then review at the intended display size. Reprocess only after confirming that the revised output looks acceptable.
- Pages still load oversized images: check the image dimensions and the sizes registered by the theme or other components. A conversion plugin cannot substitute for choosing suitable source dimensions and ensuring the page uses the appropriate generated variant.
7. Consider performance and cost in context
Smaller image files can reduce the bytes a page must transfer, but the sources do not establish a guaranteed page-speed percentage for any one site. Results depend on the images, format, settings, server, and delivery path. Compare before-and-after file sizes and inspect representative pages rather than treating a format change as proof of a speed improvement. Also account for plugin processing limits or external-service use; Elementor’s listing describes its service as third-party, so review its current terms and data handling if that matters to your site.
