To resize or move app windows on an iPad, first enable Windowed Apps or Stage Manager in Settings > Multitasking & Gestures. Then drag a window’s corner or bottom-right handle to resize it, or drag its top edge to move it.
Turn on a windowed multitasking mode
- Open Settings and tap Multitasking & Gestures.
- Select Windowed Apps for straightforward window management, or Stage Manager if you want to organize apps into groups and see recent apps along the left side. You can also switch modes from Control Center. See Apple’s guide to working with multiple windows and its Stage Manager overview.
- Open an app from the Home Screen, Dock, or App Library. Its window can then be resized and moved.
Resize an app window
Drag the bottom-right resize handle outward or inward. Apple’s iPadOS 26 instructions also describe dragging any corner of the window. The precise handle or corner you use may depend on the controls visible on screen; see Apple’s iPadOS 26 multitasking instructions.

Move a window to another place on the screen
Drag the top edge of the window to reposition it. If the app is full screen and its controls are hidden, swipe down from the top of the screen to reveal the menu-bar controls, then drag the window from its top edge.
Use the window controls
Tap a window’s controls to close it, minimize it, or return it to full screen. Touch and hold the controls to reveal additional options. In the general multiple-windows guide, Apple also says double-tapping the top of a resized window returns it to full screen. The available options can vary with the mode and iPadOS version.

Choose between Windowed Apps and Stage Manager
Both modes let you work with app windows. Windowed Apps is the direct choice if you mainly need to resize and reposition windows. Stage Manager adds a grouped-work layout: recent apps and groups appear at the left, and you can drag windows or Dock icons into a group and arrange windows together. Choose based on how you want to organize your work rather than assuming one mode is best for everyone.
If the windowing option is missing
Check your exact iPad model and installed iPadOS version against Apple’s Windowed Apps compatibility information. Apple’s page dated May 15, 2026 lists iPad (8th generation and later), iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation and later), iPad Pro 11-inch (1st generation and later), iPad Air (3rd generation and later), and iPad mini (5th generation and later), along with separately named newer models. Do not assume every iPad supports the same windowing or external-display features; check the current list for your device.

Move a window to an external display
This applies only to a compatible iPad connected to an external display. Apple documents three ways to move an app window between the iPad and display:
- With a cursor, drag the window from its top edge onto the other display.
- Open the app from the Dock or App Library on the display where you want it.
- Use the multitasking menu and choose Move to Display or Move to iPad, as appropriate.
External-display support depends on the iPad model. Follow Apple’s instructions for moving windows between displays and check your model’s compatibility before troubleshooting a missing option.
