What “Win resize windows” means
The Windows key shortcuts arrange a window using Windows Snap. They place the active app into a screen position; they are not a control for entering an exact width or height. Microsoft’s Snap guidance for Windows 10 and Windows 11 describes snapping as a way to resize and position windows by moving them to screen edges or corners.

Snap a window with the keyboard
- Select the app window you want to arrange.
- Hold the Windows key and press an arrow key. Press another arrow key while continuing to hold Windows to cycle through available Snap positions.
- Release the Windows key when the window is in the position you want.
- If Snap Assist displays other open apps, select one to fill the remaining area.
In Microsoft’s shortcut reference, Win+Left and Win+Right snap a window to the corresponding side. The reference also lists Win+Shift+Down to restore a snapped or maximized window and Win+Alt+Up/Down to snap to the top or bottom half. Available layouts and shortcut behavior can depend on the Windows version and settings.
Resize two snapped windows more precisely
After placing windows next to each other, point to the line separating them. Select and drag the divider to adjust the split. The adjoining windows resize together, which gives you more control over their relative widths than the arrow-key shortcut.

Choose keyboard snapping or mouse dragging

Microsoft documents both keyboard snapping and dragging a window to an edge or corner in its Snap instructions. For a custom desktop layout beyond Windows’ built-in Snap positions, Microsoft’s optional PowerToys FancyZones lets you define zones and automatically resize and reposition windows. FancyZones can override Windows Snap hotkeys if that option is enabled.
Windows 10 and Windows 11 support
Microsoft’s Snap article covers Windows 10 and Windows 11. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs continue to work, but Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes after that date.
