To stream a 4K video at 1080p on YouTube Live, scale its output to 1920×1080, preserve its aspect ratio, and send it with a codec, frame rate, and bitrate supported by YouTube. You can do that in OBS or with FFmpeg. Resizing changes the stream output; it does not change the original file unless you export a new copy.
Check the video before resizing
Before configuring an encoder, check the source video’s dimensions, frame rate, aspect ratio, and audio. A typical 4K 16:9 file is 3840×2160; scaling it to 1920×1080 halves each dimension. Other 4K formats may have a different aspect ratio, so do not stretch them to fill a 16:9 canvas.

- Aspect ratio: Decide whether to preserve the full image with padding, crop part of the image to fill 16:9, or use a different output canvas. Stretching distorts the picture.
- Frame rate: Match the source where practical, or choose an output rate suited to the material and your encoder. YouTube supports live frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Audio: Confirm the file has the intended audio track and that it plays properly before relying on a long-running stream.
Choose YouTube Live ingest settings
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265, and AV1 codecs. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency, and says not to exceed four seconds. Follow the current guidance for the codec you select; bitrate recommendations are not interchangeable across codecs.

These figures are YouTube’s current published ingest recommendations, accessed in 2026; they are not viewer playback bitrates. YouTube transcodes incoming live streams into formats for viewers on different devices and network connections. Choose a setting your internet connection can sustain with headroom, and test the complete setup before going live.

Resize and stream with OBS
- Open OBS and go to Settings > Video.
- Set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1920×1080. OBS uses this output size for streaming or recording and applies the selected downscale filter.
- Choose a downscale filter appropriate to your material. OBS documents the filter as part of output scaling; results depend on the source and encoding choices, so no one filter is guaranteed to be best for every video.
- Set the frame rate to match the source or intended output. OBS warns that 60 fps can put more load on the system than 30 fps, so test it ahead of time.
- In Settings > Output, configure the streaming encoder, codec, CBR rate control, and bitrate. Use YouTube’s current codec-specific recommendations above, along with its keyframe guidance.
- In YouTube Studio’s live control room, create or open the stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: never publish it or include it in screenshots or commands.
- Start a private or otherwise suitable test stream, check the picture and audio, and review YouTube’s stream-health messages before relying on the setup.
OBS also has a separate Scaling/Aspect Ratio filter for an individual source. That adjusts the source’s scaling behavior; it is not a substitute for setting the overall stream output resolution.
Resize with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s scale filter can constrain output dimensions while preserving input aspect ratio. For a 16:9 4K source, a 1920×1080 output is a direct half-size scale. For non-16:9 footage, preserve the full image and decide whether to pad the remaining canvas or crop the image to fill it. Do not use a forced 1920×1080 stretch unless distortion is intended.

The filter offers different scaler algorithms and supports pixel-format conversion; the best choice depends on the footage and encoding path. Verify the resulting file’s dimensions, aspect ratio, motion, and audio before using it as a stream source. FFmpeg’s exact loop-and-stream command depends on the input container, video and audio codecs, frame rate, and YouTube ingest details. The scale-filter documentation does not establish one universal command for every setup, so do not copy a generic command without adapting and testing it. Never expose your YouTube stream key.

Scaling and looping are separate jobs: the scale setting determines the output picture size, while the player or encoder workflow determines whether playback repeats. Configure looping in the software or service you are using, since the right control or command depends on that setup.

- Run a test with representative motion and audio, not just a still frame.
- Confirm the output is 1920×1080 and the full picture is visible without unintended stretching or cropping.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm that audio and playback continue as expected.
- Keep monitoring the stream after it starts; successful connection alone does not prove that the picture, sound, and loop are behaving correctly.
YouTube’s own advice is straightforward: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
Common problems and fixes
- Picture looks stretched: The source and output aspect ratios differ. Preserve the aspect ratio and choose padding, cropping, or a different canvas instead of forcing 16:9.
- Stream drops or reports poor health: Check whether the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate, verify the encoder settings against YouTube’s current guidance, and test again with headroom.
- OBS struggles at 60 fps: OBS notes that 60 fps can tax the system more than 30 fps. Test at 30 fps or reduce other system load if the source and use case allow.
- Video appears soft or playback quality varies: Check the actual 1920×1080 output and the selected scaling and encoding settings. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream, so viewer playback is not simply the ingest bitrate.
- Audio is missing or wrong: Confirm the source contains the expected track and check it during a full-path test before starting the intended stream.
- Loop does not repeat: Verify the loop setting in the player or encoder workflow. Scaling settings alone do not configure repeat playback.
Protect your rights and channel
Encoder compatibility does not establish that you have permission to stream the video, music, or other material it contains, or that your channel is eligible for a particular live-stream setup. Check the rights for every element of the content and your account’s current YouTube requirements before going live. The encoder documentation does not resolve those questions.
