Choose the operation before touching any files. A fresh world removes the existing world’s builds, inventories, and other progress; a rollback restores those items to the state captured in a backup; recreating a world from the same seed reproduces terrain generation but does not restore progress.

| Goal | What changes | Correct method |
|---|---|---|
| Completely fresh world | World data, structures, player inventories, maps, and progress are replaced by a newly generated save. | Move or replace the active world, then let the server or Realm generate a new one. |
| Undo recent mistakes | The world returns to the exact state contained in a selected backup, including builds and items. | Restore a timestamped Realm backup or a copy of your own server save. |
| Keep the same terrain layout | The seed can recreate terrain generation, but not buildings, inventories, explored areas, maps, or other progress. | Create a new world and enter the original seed in its advanced settings. |
| Reset only the Nether or End | One Java dimension is regenerated while the rest of the save remains. | With the Java server stopped and backed up, remove that dimension’s folder. |
Replacing an entire world affects every dimension and every player. A dimension-only reset is narrower, while a backup restore is the only option that preserves the old state exactly.
Prepare a safe reset
Do this preparation before using a Realm control or changing a server folder. It gives you a recovery path if the new world is not what you expected.
#1 Best Overall
- Tell players to leave. Do not delete, rename, or copy save files while anyone is connected. Active writes can leave a save incomplete.
- Save and stop a dedicated server cleanly. Use the server’s normal save and stop controls, then wait until the process has exited. A running process may still have region, player, or level data open.
- Make a dated copy. Copy the whole server directory when practical; at minimum, copy the active world folder. Include the date and a description such as
world-before-reset-2026-10-14. - For a Realm, download the current world first. Realm replacement and reset actions can discard progress, and Realm backups are not retained indefinitely. Keep the downloaded file somewhere outside the Realm service.
- Record the current configuration. On a dedicated server, note the
level-namevalue inserver.properties. If you intend to recreate terrain, record the seed before generating anything new. - Decide whether this is a reset or a restore. A new save cannot recover old buildings or inventories merely because it uses the same seed. Keep the dated copy until the replacement has been opened and checked.
Reset a self-hosted Java server
Java servers normally keep the active save in a folder whose name is set by level-name in server.properties. The exact parent directory depends on how you installed the server, but the active folder is the one named by that property.
Generate a completely new world
- Announce maintenance and stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the entire server directory or, at minimum, the folder named by
level-name. - Rename the active world folder to a quarantine name, or move it outside the server directory. Do not delete it yet.
- Start the server with the old folder absent. The server generates a new world using its normal settings.
- Join with an operator account and inspect the spawn area, gamerules, difficulty, structures, and datapacks before inviting players back.
- Stop the server again if you need to adjust files. Keep the old folder until the new save has passed your checks.
If you want a particular seed, set the seed through the server’s normal world-generation configuration before the new save is created. Once the server has generated the world, changing a seed setting does not retrofit that existing save; you must remove or move the generated folder and create it again.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Restore the old Java world
- Stop the server and retain the new world as a separate backup in case you need it.
- Move the original folder back into the server directory.
- Make its folder name exactly match the
level-namevalue, including capitalization and punctuation. - Start the server and verify a known build, player inventory, and recent change.
If the server creates another blank world instead, check for a spelling mismatch in level-name, an extra nested folder created during extraction, or a copy placed in the wrong server directory.
Reset a Bedrock Dedicated Server
Bedrock Dedicated Server stores active worlds under the server’s worlds/ directory. Microsoft’s configuration uses level-name as the folder name, so the value in server.properties must correspond to a folder inside worlds/.
Create a fresh Bedrock world
- Stop the Bedrock server after saving and disconnecting players.
- Copy the complete server directory, or copy the active folder inside
worlds/. - Rename or move that active folder so it is no longer the folder identified by
level-name. - Start the server. With no matching save present, it generates a new world in
worlds/. - Stop and restart once to confirm that the new save loads consistently. Check spawn, player access, and any add-ons before reopening the server.
Put a previous Bedrock save back
- Stop the server and keep the newly generated folder as a separate backup.
- Place the old save inside
worlds/. - Set
level-nameto that folder’s exact name. - Start the server and test known locations and player data.
Third-party hosting panels may hide these paths behind a file manager or a reset button. The labels and confirmation screens vary by provider, so use that provider’s documentation for the panel-specific clicks; the underlying requirement remains the same: stop first, preserve a copy, and make the active folder agree with level-name.
Roll back or replace a Java Realm
Java Realms provide menu-based backup management instead of direct save-folder access.

Roll back to a timestamped backup
- Open Minecraft Realms and select the Realm.
- Choose Configure.
- Open World Backups.
- Find the timestamp that contains the state you want and select Restore.
- After the restore completes, enter the Realm and verify the world, builds, and player items before resuming play.
A restore returns the Realm to the selected save, so changes made after that timestamp are no longer in the active world. Download the current world first if you may need those later changes.
Start an entirely new Java Realm world
- Download the current Realm world from its management screen and store the file safely.
- Use the Realm’s world replacement or reset control and read the confirmation message carefully.
- Confirm only when you accept that the active Realm will no longer contain the previous world’s progress.
- Open the new world and check its generation, settings, and player access.
Realm backups are a convenience, not permanent archival storage. A downloaded copy is the reliable way to preserve a world before replacement.

- The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
- UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
- Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
- The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
- Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.
Use the Bedrock Realm World controls
Bedrock Realms expose reset and replacement actions in the Realm Hub.
- From Play, enter the Realm Hub.
- Open the World tab for the Realm.
- Choose Download World and save the current world before making a destructive change.
- Choose Replace World when you want to upload or select a different existing world.
- Choose Reset World when you want the active slot replaced by a brand-new generated world.
- Confirm the warning, wait for the operation to finish, and enter the Realm to inspect the result.
Reset World removes the current world from the Realm’s active slot and replaces it with a brand-new world. It does not preserve the old Realm state in the active slot, which is why downloading first matters.

Restore an existing backup
If your device or platform has an automatic or manual save backup, use its platform-specific save-file restore instructions. Restore the backup to a separate location when possible, then open it and confirm the date before replacing your working copy. The available menus and file locations differ between consoles, mobile devices, and Windows.
Recreate the map from its seed
Use this route only when you want familiar terrain and do not need the original progress.

- Now Minecraft lovers can play a special version of UNO!
- Same as Basic UNO but features Minecraft characters and includes special Creeper rule card. Draw this card and the other players have to draw three more cards from the pile!
- The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
- First player or team to 500 wins.
- When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
- Open the original world’s settings and copy the seed.
- From the Play screen, choose Create New World.
- Choose Create New World again to reach the full setup screen.
- Open Advanced settings and paste the seed into the seed field.
- Create the world and compare its terrain to the original.
Seed recreation generates a new world from the same terrain parameters. It does not restore builds, inventories, explored maps, villager trades, containers, or other progress from the old save.
Reset only the Nether or End on Java
This is an advanced maintenance operation for Java saves. It does not apply to Bedrock folder layouts, and it should never be attempted without a verified backup.
- Stop the Java server cleanly and copy the entire world directory.
- Open the active world folder identified by
level-name. - For the Nether, identify the
DIM-1folder. For the End, identify theDIM1folder. - Move the dimension folder out of the world directory instead of deleting it. Keep it as a rollback copy.
- Start the server. When a player enters the missing dimension, Minecraft generates that dimension again.
- Inspect the regenerated dimension and confirm that the Overworld, player data, and other dimensions remain intact.
Anything built or stored in the removed dimension is absent from the regenerated copy. Portals, coordinate notes, maps, and shared plans may point to locations that no longer exist, so tell players exactly which dimension was reset.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the same seed without keeping progress
A seed is an input to world generation, not a backup archive. It can produce a familiar arrangement of terrain under the same edition and compatible generation settings, but it does not contain the old save’s block changes or player state.
Best Value
When seed recreation is useful
- You want to explore the original terrain again with a clean starting point.
- You lost the save but recorded the seed.
- You are making a separate test world based on the same landscape.
When a seed is the wrong tool
- You need to recover a house, storage room, redstone machine, or map wall.
- You need player inventories, experience, advancements, villager progress, or item frames.
- You need the exact state from a particular date.
For those cases, restore the dated save or Realm backup rather than generating from a seed.

The server keeps loading the old world
- Confirm that the old folder was moved or renamed, not merely copied beside the active folder.
- Check
level-namefor spelling, capitalization, and hidden spaces. - Make sure the server process is using the directory you edited; hosting panels can assign a different working directory.
The server generates a blank world even after restoring
- Stop the server before changing the save again.
- Check that the restored folder is not nested one level too deep after extraction, such as
world/world/region. - On Bedrock Dedicated Server, confirm the folder is inside
worlds/. - On Java, confirm the restored folder contains the expected world data and matches
level-name.
Players report missing items after a reset
This is expected for a fresh world or a seed recreation. Player data belongs to the old save and is not reconstructed by terrain generation. Recover the previous world or restore a backup if those items matter.
A Realm replacement cannot be undone from the active slot
Stop playing in the replacement world, then use the downloaded pre-reset world or an available timestamped backup to replace or restore the Realm. Do not assume that an older Realm backup will remain available indefinitely.
Only one dimension was meant to reset, but more data is missing
Recheck which folder was moved and restore the dated copy if necessary. On Java, DIM-1 is the Nether and DIM1 is the End; moving the main world folder or another directory affects more than one dimension.
Quick Recap
Final decision checklist
- Choose a fresh world, a rollback, a seed recreation, or a single-dimension reset before acting.
- Disconnect players and stop any dedicated server cleanly.
- Copy the current save, or download the Realm world, before replacement.
- For dedicated servers, make the active folder name match
level-name; Bedrock Dedicated Server keeps that folder underworlds/. - Use Java Realm World Backups for a timestamped rollback.
- Use the Bedrock Realm World tab for Download World, Replace World, or Reset World.
- Use the Java
DIM-1orDIM1procedure only for a dimension-specific reset and only after a full backup. - Remember that a seed reproduces terrain, not the old world’s progress.
