How to Make an All the Mods 3 Server in Minecraft (ATM3 v6.1.1)

A complete walkthrough for hosting All the Mods 3 v6.1.1 on Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge, including the correct server download, Java and RAM settings, EULA setup, networking, client matching and troubleshooting.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To make an All the Mods 3 server, install the separate ATM3-SERVER-FULL-6.1.1 archive for Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge, extract every file into a dedicated folder, run its included startup script with a compatible Java runtime (Java 8 is the safest starting point), accept the EULA, and then have every player install the identical ATM3 release. The complete setup is straightforward, but ATM3 is a large legacy modpack: memory, storage speed, Java selection and client/server version matching determine whether it starts reliably.

What you need before installing ATM3

All the Mods 3 is a Minecraft Java Edition modpack, not a Bedrock server package. The currently documented legacy release is ATM3 v6.1.1, built for Minecraft 1.12.2 with Forge. The release listing identifies a separate full server download named ATM3-SERVER-FULL-6.1.1; a client profile by itself is not enough to host a world. The server-pack listing is dated June 8, 2022, so treat this as a fixed legacy installation rather than a current Minecraft release.

  • Minecraft: Java Edition on the host and every client.
  • Pack: ATM3 v6.1.1, unless you deliberately choose another ATM3 release and obtain its matching server files.
  • Loader: Forge for Minecraft 1.12.2.
  • Java: Java 8 is the conservative choice for this pack. Some hosting references report that Java 11 can work, but behavior depends on the exact Forge build, Java distribution and startup script.
  • Storage: room for the extracted files, Forge libraries, logs, configuration, backups and the generated world. Keep several gigabytes free rather than filling the disk.
  • Memory: plan on at least 6 GB allocated to the server. General AllTheMods guidance recommends 8–12 GB allocated for many packs and about 16 GB of total system RAM for a comfortable modded-server machine; those figures are planning guidance, not a published ATM3 benchmark.

Download the correct ATM3 server files

Choose the full server archive

Open the All the Mods 3 project in the CurseForge launcher or website, select the v6.1.1 release, and look for the separate Server Files download. Select ATM3-SERVER-FULL-6.1.1. Do not rename a client instance and assume it is a server, and do not download only a launcher profile: the server archive contains scripts, configuration, mods and files needed to create a Forge installation.

Create a clean server directory

On the computer that will run the world, create a new directory such as ATM3-server. Use a local disk with reliable free space, not a temporary downloads folder or a location synchronized by consumer cloud software. Cloud synchronization can lock region files while the server is writing them and can make recovery harder.

Extract every file

Extract the complete contents of the server archive directly into the new directory. Preserve the directory structure and hidden files. If you are using a paid host, upload the entire extracted directory after unpacking it locally, unless the provider explicitly offers an installer for this exact pack. Uploading only the visible mods folder omits scripts, libraries and configuration that the startup process expects.

Install and select Java 8

Check the Java version

Open a terminal or command prompt in the server directory and run:

java -version

For this 1.12.2 pack, Java 8 is the safest first choice. If the command reports a different major version, install a 64-bit Java 8 runtime and either place it first on the system path or configure the startup script to call its full executable path. A 32-bit runtime can run out of addressable memory before the pack has enough heap, so use 64-bit Java on a 64-bit operating system.

When Java 11 might work

Some ATM3 hosting documentation says Java 11 can also work. That is not a guarantee for every Forge build or operating system. If you test Java 11, keep Java 8 available so you can switch back quickly when the server exits during Forge loading, reports an unsupported class version, or behaves differently from the documented script. Record which executable the host actually uses; changing Java in a control panel does not help if a custom script still calls another binary.

Run the included startup script

Start the first installation

From the extracted directory, run the startup file supplied by the archive. Depending on the operating system and archive revision, it may be named serverstart, StartServer, or have a platform-specific extension. Use the script instead of launching a random Forge jar: the AllTheMods server scripts can check Java, fetch the configured Forge installer and install the Minecraft libraries required by the pack before launching the server.

On Windows, double-clicking the supplied batch file is possible, but running it from an open Command Prompt keeps the error text visible. On Linux or another Unix-like system, invoke the supplied shell script from the server directory; if the operating system says the file is not executable, grant execute permission to that script and run it again. Do not move the script away from the files it references.

Allow the first run to finish its setup

The first launch may take substantially longer than later starts. Forge installs libraries, each mod is discovered, and the server creates configuration directories and caches. Keep the terminal or log open. A window that appears idle while disk activity continues is not necessarily frozen. Wait for a clear server-ready message before attempting to connect.

Accept the Minecraft EULA

Edit eula.txt after the first launch

The first run normally stops after generating eula.txt. Stop the process if it remains open, then open eula.txt in the server directory. Change the line:

eula=false

to:

eula=true

Save the file without changing its name or placing it in a different folder. The startup scripts check this file, so an EULA loop usually means the file was edited in the wrong working directory, saved as eula.txt.txt, or left with eula=false. Start the same script again after saving.

Wait for the ready state

Forge and the mod list must initialize again after the EULA is accepted. Let the process complete until the console reports that the server is ready to accept commands. Stop the server cleanly from its console before making configuration changes or copying a backup; closing the terminal or killing the process can leave region data in an inconsistent state.

Set RAM and JVM arguments safely

Choose an initial allocation

For a small group, start with 6–8 GB allocated to the server and observe actual memory use. The 6 GB minimum comes from general AllTheMods server guidance, while 8–12 GB is a broad recommendation for many large packs. ATM3-specific measured optimums are not published, so these are cautious starting points rather than performance guarantees.

Leave memory for the operating system, Java’s non-heap areas, the file cache and other services. On a machine with 16 GB total RAM, assigning all 16 GB to Minecraft can make the host swap or become unstable. A dedicated machine with 16 GB system RAM gives the server more room than a shared desktop with the same nominal allocation.

Change the script’s settings file

The AllTheMods scripts keep JVM arguments and RAM values in a configurable settings file or section of the startup configuration. Open that file and adjust the values there rather than adding conflicting flags to several scripts. The important heap options are:

-Xms6G
-Xmx8G

-Xms sets the initial heap and -Xmx sets the maximum heap. Use values your physical host can sustain. If the process repeatedly reaches its maximum, the log reports an out-of-memory error, or players trigger long pauses during exploration, increase -Xmx only when unused system memory is available. If the host starts swapping, reduce the allocation or move the server to a machine with more RAM; adding heap to an already memory-starved system makes pauses worse.

Make the server reachable on a local network

Test from the host first

After the console reports readiness, connect from a Minecraft client on the same machine using the local address offered by the game, commonly localhost. This test separates mod and server problems from router problems. The connecting client must already use ATM3 v6.1.1 for Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge.

Connect friends on the same home network

Players on the same LAN generally use the host computer’s private IPv4 address, such as the address shown by the operating system’s network settings. Reserve that address in the router or configure a stable local address so it does not change after a reboot. Allow the Java process through the operating system firewall when prompted, and permit the server’s listening port in the firewall profile used by the network.

Internet access requires router and ISP configuration

Players outside your home network need the host’s public address and a router port-forwarding rule to the server computer. Exact screens and port values vary by router firmware, operating system and internet provider, so there is no universal procedure established by the ATM3 documentation. Check the server’s configured port, forward that same port to the host’s private address, and verify that your ISP does not use carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent inbound connections. Never publish your private address publicly, and restrict firewall rules to the required service.

Use a paid host when you do not want to operate the machine

A third-party Minecraft host can keep the server online without leaving a home computer powered on. Upload the complete extracted Server-Files directory or use the provider’s pack installer, then select a Java runtime compatible with Minecraft 1.12.2 and Forge. Confirm the provider’s limits before paying: a modern one-click installer does not necessarily support a legacy 1.12.2 Forge pack.

Decision factor Local machine Paid host
Upfront cost Uses hardware you already own; upgrades are your responsibility. Usually a recurring fee; no hardware purchase, but plans can restrict resources.
Java and Forge control You choose the Java executable and Forge files directly. Provider must expose a compatible Java 8 option and 1.12.2 Forge support.
RAM and CPU Limited by the host computer and other programs running on it. Defined by the plan; verify that the advertised RAM is available to your process.
Storage You choose the disk; an SSD is preferable for large worlds. Check whether storage is SSD or NVMe and whether backups count against the quota.
Backups You must schedule and store copies yourself. Look for automatic backups, retention and a tested restore control.
File access Full access to scripts, configs and logs. Ensure the panel or file transfer service permits uploading the complete pack and editing settings.
Network work You handle firewall rules, port forwarding and ISP limitations. The provider supplies the public endpoint; you still manage whitelists and server security.
Troubleshooting You diagnose Java, Forge, storage and network failures. Support may handle host outages, but modpack-specific errors remain your responsibility.

Keep every client identical to the server

Install the same ATM3 release on every player’s client: v6.1.1 for Minecraft 1.12.2 Forge in this setup. The mod list, configuration and loader build must match the server closely. A player using another ATM3 revision can receive missing-mod, mismatched-version or registry errors even when the server itself is healthy.

When a player cannot join, compare the profile’s Minecraft version, Forge version, ATM3 release and installed mods with the server files before changing network settings. Do not “fix” a mismatch by copying arbitrary client-only files into the server; obtain the matching server archive for the chosen release.

Storage and performance choices

Prefer SSD storage

Large modpacks perform many small reads while Forge starts and while new terrain is generated. General AllTheMods hardware guidance calls SSD storage essential for large packs and notes that NVMe can improve world loading. That guidance is written for newer packs, not as an ATM3-specific measurement, but the storage principle still applies: an SSD usually gives shorter startup and chunk-generation waits than a hard disk.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep backups outside the live directory

Copy the world and configuration to another disk or host on a schedule that matches how much progress your group can afford to lose. Stop the server cleanly before a manual copy, or use a backup method that is explicitly safe for live files. Test restoring a copy in a separate directory before relying on it; a backup that was never restored is only an assumption.

Watch logs rather than guessing

Use the console and the logs directory to identify the first error, not the final cascade of messages. Note the time, Java version, memory allocation and action that preceded a failure. Changing several mods, Java versions and JVM flags at once removes the evidence needed to isolate the cause.

Troubleshoot common ATM3 server failures

The server exits immediately

  • Run java -version in the server directory and verify that it reports the Java executable intended for this pack.
  • Check that the complete ATM3 server archive was extracted, including scripts, configuration and library-related files.
  • Launch the supplied startup script from its own directory so relative paths resolve correctly.
  • Read the first Java or Forge error in the console; later messages are often consequences.

The EULA prompt repeats

  • Confirm that eula.txt is in the working server directory.
  • Make sure the line is exactly eula=true, with no second copy of the file hidden by an extension.
  • Save the file with plain text encoding and rerun the same startup script.

The server runs out of memory or pauses for a long time

  • Check the configured -Xmx and the host’s free physical RAM.
  • Increase the maximum heap gradually only when the operating system has headroom; do not allocate all system memory.
  • Use SSD storage and allow the first Forge/mod initialization to finish before judging normal startup time.
  • Reduce simultaneous world exploration or heavy automation while observing whether pauses correlate with memory use.

A client reports a Forge or mod mismatch

  • Compare ATM3 release numbers on both sides; v6.1.1 is the documented 1.12.2 release in this guide.
  • Compare the Minecraft and Forge target, then compare the installed mod files and configuration.
  • Reinstall the client profile from the same release rather than manually adding files from another pack version.

World loading is unusually slow

  • Check whether the server is running from a hard disk, a nearly full disk or a synchronized folder.
  • Watch CPU, memory, disk activity and the server log during chunk generation.
  • Move the server to an SSD or NVMe drive when storage latency is the bottleneck; this is a general modded-Minecraft recommendation, not a measured ATM3 guarantee.

Operate the server safely after installation

Stop and restart cleanly

Use the server console’s normal stop command before shutting down the host. Schedule restarts during times when players are offline, especially after changing Java, Forge, memory settings or core configuration. Keep the startup script and settings file together so a restart uses the same arguments every time.

Document the working combination

Record ATM3 v6.1.1, Minecraft 1.12.2, the Forge build installed by the script, the Java major version, the -Xms/-Xmx values and the server directory location. This short inventory lets you reproduce the installation after a disk failure or migration and gives players a precise checklist when they cannot connect.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan migrations instead of overwriting the live world

Before changing pack releases or Java versions, make a verified backup and test the new files in a separate directory. A legacy 1.12.2 world can depend on its original mod IDs and configuration; replacing files in place can make rollback difficult. Keep the known-good ATM3 server directory until the new installation has started and the world has been checked.
