To reset only the Nether on a Minecraft Java server, make a backup, stop the server completely, and remove the Nether save directory that matches your server software and Minecraft version. Vanilla and many modded servers commonly use <level-name>/DIM-1; Paper, Spigot, and other Bukkit-derived servers commonly use <level-name>_nether (often world_nether); Minecraft 26.1 and newer documents the path world/dimensions/minecraft/the_nether. Start the server again and it will generate a new Nether while leaving the Overworld and End alone, provided you removed only the Nether directory.

What a Nether reset actually does
A Nether reset is a save-data operation, not a button in the normal game menu. The server forgets the generated Nether terrain stored in one directory and creates that dimension again when it needs to load it. Every generated chunk, structure, chest, portal-area change, and player build in the removed directory is discarded unless you can restore it from a backup.

Removing only the Nether directory does not inherently reset either of them, and it does not by itself change the world seed or the generation settings. Those settings belong to the server and world configuration and are a separate change. Player inventories and other player data are not the target of a Nether-only directory removal, although plugins and mods can add their own behavior, which is why a complete backup is essential.
Choose the correct Nether folder
The folder name depends on both the server software and the Minecraft version. Do not delete a directory merely because its name contains “world”; first check the value of level-name in server.properties. If it is not world, substitute that value in the paths below.

These are conventions, not permission to guess. A modpack, proxy arrangement, host control panel, or migration can produce a different directory structure. The reliable method is to identify the active level name, inspect the folders created by that server, and match the directory to the Nether rather than relying on a familiar name.
Before touching the files
Make a recoverable backup
Copy the entire server world data, or at minimum the main world and the relevant Nether folder, to a dated location outside the live server directory. A compressed archive, a host snapshot, or a downloaded copy all work if you can retrieve individual files from it. Renaming the Nether folder and moving it outside the server directory is also reversible, but it is not a substitute for a separate backup if the same disk or account could fail.
Record the server version, server software, level-name, and the original folder name. Those details make it possible to identify the right backup if you need to undo the reset. If your host offers automatic backups, verify that a recent snapshot completed rather than assuming that backups are enabled.
Save and stop cleanly
If the server software supports an explicit save operation, run it from the console or control panel and wait for it to finish. Then stop the server through its normal stop control. Do not delete files while the process is still running: the server may still be writing region, portal, player, or plugin data and can recreate, lock, or corrupt files.

Wait until the panel reports that the process is fully offline, or confirm that the Java process has exited when you administer the machine yourself. Ensure no players are in the Nether before shutdown; this is also the Minecraft Wiki maintenance procedure. Warn connected players because their last actions may not be included if you force a stop.
Step-by-step: reset the Nether
- Identify the active world name. Open
server.propertiesand readlevel-name. If it saysadventure, for example, the older-layout main folder would beadventure, notworld. - Shut the server down completely. Save through the server’s supported control, issue a normal stop, and wait until the process is offline. Confirm that nobody is still connected or standing in the Nether.
- Open the server’s top-level directory. In a host file manager, this is the directory containing the server jar and
server.properties. On a self-hosted machine, use the account and file-management method you normally use to administer that server. - Match the folder to the layout. Look for
<level-name>/DIM-1,<level-name>_nether, or the 26.1-and-newerdimensions/minecraft/the_netherpath. Compare the surrounding folders with the table above and do not proceed if the structure is ambiguous. - Prefer moving or renaming first. Move the identified Nether directory outside the live server directory, or rename it with a dated suffix. This gives you a quick rollback and prevents the offline server from loading it accidentally. If you permanently delete it instead, confirm that your backup is accessible before emptying any recycle bin or trash.
- Remove only the Nether directory. Do not remove the main world folder, the End folder,
DIM1, player-data directories, or plugin data. A Nether-only reset depends on leaving all unrelated save data in place. - Start the server normally. The first load of the Nether can take longer because the server has no existing Nether chunks to read. Allow startup to finish and watch the console or panel for errors before inviting players back.
- Verify regeneration. Enter the Nether through an existing portal or create a safe test portal. Check that terrain is newly generated and that the Overworld and End still contain their previous builds and progress. Stop immediately and restore the moved folder if you discover that the wrong directory was removed.
How the layouts differ in practice
Vanilla and older modded layout: DIM-1
In the older arrangement, the Nether is a dimension directory inside the main level folder. For a default level name, that is world/DIM-1. The End is commonly represented by world/DIM1, without the hyphen. The names are easy to confuse when using a command-line shell or a compact host file manager, so check every character before moving anything.

Bukkit-derived servers commonly separate dimensions into sibling folders. With the default level name, the Overworld is usually world, while the Nether is world_nether. If level-name is customized, use the corresponding suffix, such as adventure_nether. Removing the main world folder instead would affect the Overworld, not just the Nether.
Minecraft 26.1 and newer documented path
For Minecraft 26.1 and newer, the documented layout places the Nether under world/dimensions/minecraft/the_nether. Version upgrades and server implementations can leave older folders in place, so inspect the active save rather than moving both an old and a new-looking directory “just in case.” Delete or move the one that the running server’s current layout identifies as the Nether.

Using a control panel, file manager, or shell
Managed-host control panel
Stop the instance with the panel’s normal stop action, wait for the offline status, and open its file manager. Navigate from the server root to the matching path. Most panels provide a delete, move, or rename action; choose move or rename when available and place the folder outside the active world path. Start the instance only after the operation finishes. If the panel hides parent directories, use its server-root or “instance files” view rather than a plugin-specific world browser.
Self-hosted server
Use the same account that owns the server files, and work from the directory containing server.properties. A graphical file manager is acceptable; an administrative shell is acceptable if you can verify the path before executing a destructive command. Because the exact shell command varies by operating system and your chosen backup strategy, the safe rule is to display or inspect the target path first, then move it to a dated backup location. Never run a recursive deletion against a pattern such as “world*”; that can include the Overworld and other dimensions.

If you use an SFTP or similar client, download or archive the folder before deleting it, then refresh the remote listing after the move. A stale client window can make a directory appear present when the server has already recreated it, or hide a failed transfer. Keep the transfer window open until you have confirmed the backup size and destination.
What is reset and what remains

Portals, plugins, and modded servers
A fresh Nether can alter the terrain around portal destinations, even though the Overworld portal block remains. Players may arrive at newly generated ground or find that a destination no longer exists where a build stood. Treat portal behavior as something to test after the reset rather than assuming every link will be identical.

Plugins and mods can store Nether-related claims, teleport destinations, maps, inventories, or region data outside the standard dimension folder. A Nether reset does not automatically remove or rebuild those external records. Check the documentation for installed dimension, portal, protection, claims, and map plugins before you delete anything beyond the identified Nether directory. Keep the backup until players have confirmed that those systems behave correctly.
On a modded server, generation also depends on the installed mod set and configuration. A reset regenerates using the settings currently loaded by the server; it does not restore a previous mod configuration. If the world was created with custom dimensions or datapacks, identify whether the target is the vanilla Nether namespace or a mod-owned dimension before acting.

The server generated the old Nether again
Confirm that the server was fully offline when you moved the folder, and check that you changed the directory used by the active level-name. On Bukkit-derived software, looking inside world/DIM-1 will not reset a Nether stored in world_nether. A panel may also run a different instance directory than the one you edited.
No Nether folder is present
The dimension may not have been generated yet, the server may use a different level name, or the version-specific layout may differ. Recheck server.properties, inspect the actual world tree, and review the startup log for the loaded world path. Do not create a replacement directory by hand unless the server software’s documentation requires it; allow the server to create the save when the Nether is first accessed.
The Overworld or End changed
Stop the server before making further changes. Compare the moved or deleted path with your recorded backup and restore the original data if the wrong folder was touched. Do not attempt to “repair” a mixed set of folders by copying random region files; restore a coherent backup of the affected world data, then repeat the process with the correct Nether path.

Players report missing builds
That is expected for builds stored in the removed Nether save. If the reset was accidental, stop the server, move the newly generated Nether out of the way, and restore the pre-reset Nether directory from your backup. Any progress made in the newly generated Nether after the reset will not be present in the older copy, so decide which state you intend to keep before restoring.
Startup reports file or plugin errors
Keep the server offline and read the error in context. Verify that the directory move did not leave a partial upload, permission change, or duplicate folder. If a plugin owns additional Nether data, follow that plugin’s recovery procedure and use the backup rather than deleting more directories experimentally.
A safe verification checklist
- The backup or dated moved copy can be opened and is stored outside the live server directory.
level-namewas checked instead of assuming the default nameworld.- The server was saved and fully stopped before any folder operation.
- No player was left in the Nether during shutdown.
- The selected path matches the software/version layout:
DIM-1,<level-name>_nether, ordimensions/minecraft/the_nether. DIM1, the End, the main Overworld folder, and unrelated plugin data were left alone.- The server started cleanly and created a new Nether when accessed.
- An Overworld portal, the End, player inventories, and important plugins were checked after restart.
When a Nether reset is the right choice
Resetting is appropriate when you want newly generated Nether terrain, new structure placement, or access to generation changes while preserving the Overworld. It is not appropriate when the goal is merely to remove a few builds, reclaim selected chunks, or change the world seed without accepting wider consequences. Those cases require a targeted edit, a planned migration, or a separate world-generation project rather than deleting the entire Nether save.
The operation is reversible only while an intact pre-reset copy exists. Once that copy is deleted and the server continues generating new data, the former Nether cannot be reconstructed from the server’s seed alone. Keep the backup until the new dimension and all dependent plugins have been tested by the people who use the server.

The Minecraft Wiki’s server-maintenance guidance says to ensure no players are in the dimension and stop the server before deletion, and identifies deleting DIM-1 in the server world folder as the older-layout Nether reset. The exaroton Help Center likewise warns that a reset permanently deletes builds in that dimension and should be performed while the server is offline.
