It is a management and monitoring layer, so the dedicated server must first launch successfully, listen on the expected ports, and be reachable from the CSMM host. Check the server console or log before changing CSMM, then verify the game versions, firewall and forwarding rules, CSMM’s production setup, and the server entry credentials in that order.

What “won’t load” means in a CSMM setup
A CSMM installation sits beside the dedicated game-server process. It reads server status and sends management commands through the connection details you provide; it does not replace the game executable, repair a failed world load, or bypass a firewall. A failure can therefore occur in several different places:

- Game-server failure: the dedicated process exits, hangs while loading a world, or never binds to its game port.
- Network failure: the process is running, but a host firewall, router, NAT rule, security group, or wrong address prevents CSMM from reaching it.
- CSMM-host failure: the CSMM application, its runtime, database migration, or production startup is incomplete.
- Configuration or authentication failure: CSMM has an incorrect game port, web/API or telnet value, address, or credential.
- Player-client failure: the server is healthy, but one computer cannot launch or join the game because of mods, antivirus interference, or residual client settings.
Identifying the failing layer prevents a common mistake: repeatedly editing CSMM while the dedicated server is stopped, or changing router rules when only one player’s client is broken.
Start with the dedicated-server console and log
Do this before reinstalling CSMM or deleting configuration files. Open the dedicated-server console, service panel, or current log and determine whether the process reaches a stable running state. Look for a clear startup completion message, the bound game port, world-generation errors, missing files, exceptions, or an immediate process exit.

- Start or restart the dedicated server without changing CSMM.
- Watch the console until it either reports that the world is running/listening or stops with an error.
- Save the relevant error output and the last several minutes of the log.
- Run the version command provided by your installed CSMM release and save its output as well. CSMM support requests both the error output and version information when diagnosing a connection problem.
If the process never reaches a running state, treat this as a game-server problem first. Repair the server installation, world, permissions, or mod set before testing CSMM again. If it reaches a running state, continue with the version and network checks below.
Confirm that the game versions match
The CSMM server-setup guidance requires the game version on the connecting PC to equal the version installed on the game server. A mismatch can look like a CSMM timeout, a failed join, or a connection that drops immediately after loading.
Check both sides
- Record the version displayed by the dedicated-server console or its startup log.
- Record the version shown by the player’s game client.
- For a CSMM host, record the CSMM version from its version command so you can distinguish a game-version mismatch from an application mismatch.
Correct the mismatch
Update or roll back the mismatched side to the same supported game build, then fully restart the dedicated server. Do not test with a partially updated installation: a launcher can finish downloading while an old server process is still running. After the restart, confirm the new version in the console before trying CSMM.
If the server is rented, ask the provider which game build is active and whether an update is pending. Do not assume that the version visible in your local client is the version running on the host.

Use the documented ports and test reachability
The current CSMM server-setup documentation lists these default ports:
| Port | Protocol | Purpose | What must allow it |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26900 | TCP | Game-server connection | Dedicated server, host firewall, and any router/NAT or provider forwarding rule |
| 26900–26902 | UDP | Gameplay traffic | Dedicated server, host firewall, and any router/NAT or provider forwarding rule |
| 8082 | TCP | CSMM or Alloc’s web map, when enabled | Web-map service, host firewall, and any router/NAT or provider forwarding rule |
These are documented defaults, not universal values. If the server XML or hosting panel changes a port, use the changed value everywhere: the server configuration, CSMM entry, operating-system firewall, router forwarding, and provider firewall or security group. Forwarding only 26900/TCP while leaving the gameplay UDP range blocked can produce a server that appears online but cannot complete a join.
Check the local listener
On the machine running the game server, verify that the process is listening on the configured TCP port and has bound the expected UDP ports. Use the operating system’s socket or network-status utility, or the hosting panel’s port display. A missing listener means the server configuration or process is wrong; an active listener shifts attention to filtering or routing.
Check each network boundary
- Host firewall: permit the dedicated-server executable or the configured TCP and UDP ports on the correct network profile.
- Router/NAT: forward the same ports to the server’s current private IP address. Reserve that address so a DHCP change does not silently break the rule.
- Provider firewall: on a virtual or rented server, open the ports in the provider control panel as well as in the operating system.
- Address: enter the reachable public address or hostname in CSMM, not a private LAN address that exists only inside your home network.
Test from the CSMM host’s network, not only from the game server itself. A local test can succeed while an external firewall or carrier-grade NAT blocks remote traffic. If you use custom ports, write down the complete mapping before editing CSMM so that a port number is not accidentally changed in one place only.

Repair a fresh self-hosted CSMM installation
A new CSMM host has more prerequisites than a server entry. Confirm the runtime requirements documented for your CSMM release, install the production dependencies, and make sure the application can reach its database. The CSMM documentation emphasizes production mode for security, application stability, and data persistence.
Complete the one-time database migration
After the database and production dependencies are ready, run the migration from the CSMM application directory:
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Run this once for a fresh database, and inspect the terminal output. A missing runtime, inaccessible database, invalid environment variable, or permission error must be corrected before starting the web application.
Start CSMM in production mode
NODE_ENV=production npm run start
Leave the startup output visible during the first test. Confirm that CSMM binds to its configured web address, completes initialization without an exception, and remains running after the shell prompt would otherwise return. If it exits, fix the first startup error rather than repeatedly restarting it; later messages are often consequences of the original failure.

Check the runtime and persistence
- Use the Node.js/runtime version supported by your CSMM release.
- Install the project’s production dependencies in the application directory; do not assume development-only packages are present on a production host.
- Ensure the CSMM process account can read its configuration and write the database and required data directories.
- When using a service manager or container, confirm that its environment includes
NODE_ENV=productionand the same database settings used during migration.
A CSMM web page that opens does not prove that the game-server connection works. Once CSMM itself stays up, validate the server entry and watch its connection status while checking the game-server log.
Validate or re-add the server entry
Use CSMM’s quick-start flow to inspect every field rather than changing only the address. The entry normally needs the game-server address, game port, web/API or telnet details, and the appropriate credentials. A single wrong field can produce a generic timeout.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open the server-management area and edit the affected server entry.
- Replace the address with the host value that is reachable from the CSMM machine.
- Enter the actual game port from the server configuration. If it is not the default, use the custom value consistently in the firewall and forwarding rules.
- Check the web/API or telnet port and confirm that the corresponding service is enabled on the game server.
- Re-enter credentials carefully, avoiding copied spaces or credentials from a different server.
- Save the entry, restart or reconnect the server integration, and compare the resulting CSMM message with the dedicated-server log.
CSMM warns that its quick-start method may not be accurate for servers rented from a hosting company. Managed hosts can use non-default ports, private routing, proxies, or provider-specific credentials. Request the exact address, game port, web/API or telnet value, and authentication details from that host instead of assuming the defaults above.

“Connection timeout”
A timeout usually means packets are being dropped or sent to the wrong destination. Verify the address, custom port, host firewall, router forwarding, provider firewall, and whether the service is actually listening. Test from the CSMM host’s network and check both TCP 26900 and UDP 26900–26902 where applicable. If the server log shows no incoming attempt, the request is not reaching the game process.

“Connection refused” or an immediate disconnect
Refusal generally indicates that the address is reachable but no service is listening on that port, or a firewall is actively rejecting it. Return to the dedicated-server console, confirm the process is still running, and compare its bound port with the CSMM entry. An immediate disconnect after a successful handshake also warrants a version check.
Authentication or telnet/API errors
When the game port is reachable but CSMM cannot issue commands, inspect the web/API or telnet setting and credentials. Confirm that the service is enabled, that its port is allowed through the firewall, and that the credentials belong to this server. Do not “fix” an authentication error by opening unrelated ports.

This is a CSMM-host problem rather than a game-server problem. Review the production startup output, runtime prerequisites, database migration result, bind address, and the TCP port used by CSMM. If you are using the documented web-map default, 8082/TCP must also be permitted when that map is enabled; it is separate from the game’s gameplay UDP range.
Only one player cannot load the game
If CSMM reports the server as healthy and other players can connect, stop changing server ports. Follow the client-side path instead: temporarily remove or disable mods, check antivirus exclusions, and clear only the documented residual settings location under %appdata%7DaysToDie. Back up personal settings or saves before removing anything, and restore items one at a time to identify the offending file. The official General Troubleshooting guidance used for this client path was updated October 1, 2026.
Self-hosting versus managed hosting
CSMM’s technical requirements apply in either environment, but the person who controls the operating system and network changes. Use these criteria when deciding whether moving the server will shorten the repair.
| Decision factor | Self-hosted server | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-system and file control | Full control; you maintain the runtime, files, updates, and permissions. | Provider controls some or all of the OS; confirm what files and services you can access. |
| Required ports | You configure the host firewall, router/NAT, and any cloud security group. | Verify that the provider exposes the game TCP port, gameplay UDP range, and any CSMM/web-map port you need. |
| Console and logs | Direct access when the process is yours. | Confirm console, log, and telnet/API access before subscribing or migrating. |
| CSMM compatibility | You can install the supported runtime and run migrations yourself. | Ask whether CSMM connections and custom ports are permitted on the chosen plan. |
| Backups and recovery | You design and test your own backup and restore process. | Check backup frequency, retention, restore access, and whether world files are included. |
| Version pinning | You choose when to update or roll back, provided the files are available. | Confirm how the provider handles game updates and whether you can remain on a matching build. |
| Cost | Depends on hardware, bandwidth, electricity, and administration; no universal figure is established here. | Pricing and included features vary by provider and must be verified directly. |
Managed hosting is worth considering when you cannot expose the required ports, lack reliable console/log access, or need provider-supported backups. It is not automatically a CSMM fix: a host that hides logs, changes ports without notice, or forces a different game version can create the same symptoms. Confirm compatibility before moving the world.
Prevent the next CSMM outage
- Record the game version, CSMM version, address, and every active TCP/UDP port after a successful setup.
- Keep a copy of the server XML and CSMM connection details, with credentials stored securely rather than in a shared document.
- Reserve the server’s private IP or use a stable provider address so forwarding rules do not become stale.
- Back up worlds and CSMM data before game updates, migrations, or mod changes; test that a restore is usable.
- After an update, start the dedicated server first, confirm its console reaches a running state, then test CSMM.
- When a failure occurs, capture the server error and CSMM version output before making changes. That record makes it possible to tell a version, network, runtime, and client problem apart.
The reliable repair order is therefore: prove the dedicated server runs, match the game versions, open and test the correct ports, complete CSMM’s production initialization, validate the server entry, and only then investigate an individual player’s client. Following that order keeps a CSMM timeout from hiding the real fault.
