You cannot reset a Bedrock Dedicated Server Nether by deleting Java Edition’s DIM-1 folder. Bedrock stores the active world beneath worlds/<level-name>/, using a database-style db/ directory rather than a separately documented Nether folder. The safe choices are to restore a backup, recreate the world from its seed, or use a Bedrock-compatible editor for a selective chunk operation. Stop the server and make a complete copy of the active world before attempting any file maintenance.

Why the Java DIM-1 method does not work on Bedrock
Many server guides describe a quick Java Edition reset: stop the server, delete the world’s DIM-1 directory, restart, and let the Nether generate again. That procedure depends on Java’s Anvil file layout. It is not a documented Bedrock Dedicated Server procedure.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
Microsoft’s Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation says worlds are installed as subfolders of worlds/, with each folder named by the exact value of level-name in server.properties. A Bedrock world-management reference describes the world data, including dimensions, as a LevelDB-style db/ store and notes that there is no directory to delete in the same way as Java’s DIM-1.
Therefore, do not search for or remove DIM-1, DIM1, or a guessed folder such as world_nether on a Bedrock server. Those names come from other server layouts. Deleting an arbitrary Bedrock file can damage the entire world, remove player data, or make the server unable to load the save.

Identify the actual Bedrock world before changing anything
First verify that the server software is Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS), not a Java server running Paper, Spigot, or another Java implementation. The official Minecraft download documentation distinguishes BDS from Java server software. The paths and reset instructions in this article apply only to BDS world storage.
Read the exact level-name value
- Stop the server process cleanly. Do not copy or edit a world while the database is being written.
- Open the server’s
server.propertiesfile in a text editor. - Find the line beginning
level-name=. - Copy the value after the equals sign exactly, including capitalization, spaces, punctuation, and any unusual characters. Microsoft specifically requires the folder name and the
level-namevalue to match exactly, including letter case. - Inside the server’s
worlds/directory, locate the folder with that exact name. This is the active world folder. Do not assume that the folder with the newest timestamp or the most familiar name is the one the server uses.
Confirm that the folder is complete
A normal active world folder contains the Bedrock world’s database and metadata. The presence of a db/ directory is an important sign that you are looking at Bedrock world data. Do not open, rename, or delete individual database files to target the Nether. Bedrock does not document a supported file-level command for removing only that dimension.

A reset can remove valuable builds, inventories, map progress, and player changes. Create a full copy of the active world folder while the server is stopped, and store that copy somewhere separate from the live server. A second disk or other independent storage is preferable to another folder on the same disk, because a disk failure or mistaken deletion could otherwise destroy both copies.
Backup procedure
- Announce maintenance and stop the Bedrock server normally so pending writes finish.
- Use
level-nameto identifyworlds/<exact-name>/. - Copy the entire world folder, including
db/and all metadata files, rather than copying only visible region-like files. - Give the copy a descriptive name such as
world-before-nether-change-2026-10-14and record which server version created it. - Check that the copied folder contains the expected files and that its size is plausible compared with the live folder. Do not delete the original until you have verified that the backup can be retained and, ideally, tested on a separate server instance.
A portable external drive is useful for retaining a complete backup, but the drive itself does not reset a dimension. The important property is that the backup is complete, readable, and kept apart from the working copy.

Choose the outcome that matches your goal
| Goal | Appropriate method | What changes or is lost |
|---|---|---|
| Undo a recent Nether mistake | Restore a backup created before the mistake | All changes made after that backup are lost |
| Start over while keeping familiar terrain | Create a new world from the original seed | Builds, inventories, discovered areas, and other progress are not restored |
| Keep the Overworld and remove selected Nether areas | Use a Bedrock-compatible editor or chunk workflow after verifying support | Compatibility and data-loss risks depend on the tool; no official Nether-only procedure is documented |
| See different terrain farther from the existing Nether | Travel into chunks that have never generated | Existing generated chunks remain unchanged |
Option 1: Restore a Bedrock backup
Restoring a backup is the official rollback approach when you want the whole world returned to an earlier state. It is the closest supported answer to undoing a Nether change, but it is not a dimension-only operation: the Overworld, Nether, End, player data, inventories, and all other saved state return to the backup’s point in time.
When a restore is appropriate
- You have an automatic or manual backup made before unwanted Nether exploration, construction, corruption, or accidental destruction.
- You accept losing every world change made after that backup, not just Nether changes.
- You can schedule downtime while the old world is replaced and the server is checked.
Restore steps
- Stop the server and retain the full pre-restore copy you made. This gives you a way back if the selected backup is wrong.
- Open the backup controls supplied by your Bedrock server environment, whether they are local files or a hosting control panel.
- Identify a backup whose timestamp predates the Nether problem. Confirm that it belongs to this world and server, rather than a similarly named save.
- Use the environment’s restore action to replace the active world with that backup. If the system asks for a destination, select the world identified by the current
level-name. - Allow the restore to finish completely before starting the server. Do not combine an incomplete restore with manual deletion of database files.
- Start the server and verify the Overworld, Nether portals, player inventories, and a few known builds. Check the console for database or version errors.
Minecraft Help describes automatic and manual Bedrock backups as the mechanism for returning a world to an earlier point. The exact button names differ by hosting environment, so follow the labels presented by your own backup system rather than assuming a Java-oriented control panel path.

If no usable backup exists, you can create a new Bedrock world with the original seed. Matching the seed recreates the world’s generated terrain rules, including the familiar Overworld and Nether terrain pattern for the same game version and generation settings. It does not recover the old save.
What seed recreation preserves
- The numeric or text seed used for terrain generation.
- The resulting terrain pattern, subject to the Bedrock version and world-generation settings used for the new world.
- A clean opportunity to generate the Nether again from unexplored data.
What seed recreation cannot preserve
- Player inventories, experience, positions, and achievements stored in the old world.
- Builds, farms, portals, maps, chests, villager trades, and other progress.
- Previously generated chunks as saved state. A seed describes generation; it is not a backup of the world.
Recreation procedure
- Keep the old world folder and your rollback copy untouched. Do not overwrite them while testing the new save.
- Obtain the original seed from the world’s settings or a reliable record. If the seed is unknown, a new world cannot reproduce the old terrain exactly.
- Create a new Bedrock world using that seed and the same relevant generation options, difficulty, and experiments where possible.
- Allow the new world to load, then enter the Nether and inspect terrain generation before committing to it.
- Replace the server’s active world only after confirming that the new save works. Update
level-nameto the new folder name if necessary, matching capitalization exactly. - Tell players that this is a new world. Do not promise that structures, inventories, or builds will reappear simply because the seed matches.
Minecraft Help summarizes the limitation directly: creating a world from a seed lets you play through a familiar world, but it does not restore progress. Treat this as a full world restart, not as a Nether repair.

Option 3: Selectively regenerate Nether chunks
Keeping the existing Overworld while removing only selected Nether terrain requires an external Bedrock-compatible world editor or chunk tool. The official Bedrock Dedicated Server documentation does not provide a command or supported file operation for deleting the Nether alone, and compatibility varies by tool, Bedrock version, and the particular world database.
Why this is an advanced workflow
- The Nether is stored as part of the Bedrock world database rather than in a universally removable dimension folder.
- Tools that understand Java Anvil regions may not understand Bedrock LevelDB data.
- A tool may support one Bedrock release but damage data from another release.
- Removing chunks can affect portals, entities, structures, maps, and player positions at the edges of the edited area.
Minimum safety checks
- Keep the server offline and preserve an untouched full-world backup.
- Check the editor’s documentation for explicit Bedrock support, supported server versions, and dimension/chunk editing capability. Do not rely on a tool that merely says it supports Minecraft worlds.
- Work on a duplicate of the world, never the only copy.
- Define the exact Nether chunks to remove and record portal coordinates, builds, and storage that must survive.
- Open the edited copy in a test server first. Verify portal travel, player inventories, entity behavior, structures, and console output.
- Only replace the production world after the test succeeds and another rollback copy exists.
No verified tool or official command establishes a universal Nether-only reset for BDS. If a tool cannot state which Bedrock versions and dimensions it supports, assume it is unsuitable for this job.

If you only want newer Nether terrain
A reset is unnecessary when the aim is simply to find terrain that has not generated before. Travel beyond the explored Nether area and allow new chunks to generate normally. Existing chunks are not replaced, so this will not remove an unwanted fortress, tunnel, portal hub, or other construction. It is the least destructive choice when preserving the current world matters more than changing already generated terrain.

Editing while the server is running
Symptom: The copied world is incomplete, changes appear to return, or the server reports database errors.
Recovery: Stop the process cleanly, discard the suspect copy, and make a fresh full backup. A live database can change while it is being copied, so a partial snapshot may not be usable.
Using the wrong world folder
Symptom: You restore or replace a folder, but the server starts an apparently different world.

Recovery: Reopen server.properties, copy the exact level-name value, and compare it character by character with the folder under worlds/. Case and spaces matter. Check that the server instance you stopped is the same instance whose files you edited.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesExpecting a seed to restore progress
Symptom: The terrain looks familiar, but buildings and inventories are missing.
Recovery: Switch back to the preserved original world or restore a backup. A seed can reproduce generation, not saved player and world state.
Restoring the wrong backup
Symptom: The server starts, but the Nether problem remains or unrelated recent work disappears.
Recovery: Stop the server, retain the mistaken restore as a separate copy for reference, and select a backup whose timestamp is demonstrably before the incident. Never delete your original rollback copy until the result is confirmed.
Pre-reset checklist
- Is the server definitely Bedrock Dedicated Server?
- Did you stop it cleanly before copying or editing files?
- Did you read the exact
level-namefromserver.properties? - Did you identify
worlds/<level-name>/rather than a Java-style dimension folder? - Do you have a complete copy of the world stored separately?
- Have you chosen between full rollback, seed-based recreation, selective editing, and simply exploring new chunks?
- Have you told players exactly which progress will be lost?
- If using an editor, have you verified Bedrock and server-version compatibility on a duplicate world?
Decision guide
Choose backup restoration when the problem is recent and preserving the world’s earlier state is acceptable. Choose seed recreation only when you can tolerate a completely new save and have no usable backup. Choose a selective editor workflow when retaining the Overworld is essential and you are prepared for version-specific testing and rollback. Choose exploration when you only need untouched terrain and do not want to alter existing chunks.
