To make a local web stack reachable only from the same computer, bind each service to the loopback interface instead of every network interface. In Apache, replace wildcard-only listeners such as Listen 80 with Listen 127.0.0.1:80 (and add Listen [::1]:80 if local IPv6 is required). In MySQL, set bind_address=127.0.0.1 in the [mysqld] section, then restart both services and inspect their listening sockets.

Do not treat a successful localhost database login as proof that MySQL’s TCP port is private: on Unix-like systems, that name commonly selects a Unix socket. Test TCP explicitly with --host=127.0.0.1 --protocol=TCP, and check both IPv4 and IPv6 listeners. If no application needs TCP at all, MySQL’s skip_networking option removes the TCP listener completely, but every client must then use a Unix socket, named pipe, or shared memory.

What “localhost only” actually changes
A service can listen on one address, several addresses, or every address assigned to a machine. The loopback addresses are local-only endpoints: 127.0.0.1 for IPv4 and ::1 for IPv6. A process bound to those addresses does not accept a connection arriving on the computer’s Wi-Fi, Ethernet, VPN, or public address.
Apache and MySQL apply this idea differently. Apache’s Listen directive determines which local sockets the HTTP server opens. A line containing only a port, such as Listen 80, means that Apache listens on port 80 on all interfaces. An address-qualified line limits the socket to that address. Apache’s <VirtualHost> blocks select how an already accepted request is handled; they do not create a listener on an address that is absent from Listen.

MySQL’s bind_address controls the addresses used for TCP/IP connections. Setting it to 127.0.0.1 leaves TCP available to local programs while rejecting remote TCP clients. skip_networking is a stronger choice: it disables MySQL TCP/IP altogether and leaves only local transports supported by the operating system and client.
Check the active instance before editing
Make sure you are changing the configuration that the running process actually reads. Apache and MySQL can have multiple installed versions, and a service manager may start a different instance from the one you test in a shell.

- Record the ports in use. Apache commonly uses 80 for HTTP and 443 for TLS; MySQL’s classic protocol commonly uses 3306, although any deployment can choose another port.
- Find the service unit and executable currently running rather than assuming a package default. On systemd systems, the service is often named
apache2orhttpdfor Apache andmysqlormysqldfor MySQL. - Back up the active configuration files before changing them. Common locations differ by distribution, so use the package’s included configuration and include files instead of creating a second, competing file.
- Check whether a reverse proxy, container, port-forwarding rule, or second server is also listening. Binding one instance to loopback cannot stop another process from exposing a port.
Bind Apache to the loopback interfaces
Replace wildcard listeners
In the active Apache server configuration, replace wildcard-only directives with explicit loopback listeners. For an IPv4-only local site, use:
# IPv4 loopback
Listen 127.0.0.1:80If local applications or browsers use IPv6, add a separate IPv6 loopback socket:
# IPv6 loopback, optional
Listen [::1]:80Apply the same pattern to TLS. Keep the protocol annotation used by your configuration:
Listen 127.0.0.1:443 https
Listen [::1]:443 httpsRemove or comment out conflicting wildcard lines such as Listen 80, Listen 443, Listen 0.0.0.0:80, or an unintended wildcard IPv6 listener. Leaving a wildcard directive in an included file can continue to expose the service even after you add a loopback line. Overlapping Listen directives can also prevent Apache from starting with an address-in-use error.

Keep virtual hosts consistent
After changing Listen, inspect the virtual-host declarations. A virtual host such as <VirtualHost 127.0.0.1:80> is appropriate for an IPv4-only listener; an IPv6 listener needs a matching <VirtualHost [::1]:80> declaration when the configuration distinguishes the two addresses. The listener decides whether a connection is accepted, while the virtual host decides which site, certificates, and request rules handle it.

Validate and reload Apache
- Run the configuration checker supplied by your build:
apachectl configtestor, on systems that use the binary name directly,httpd -t. Continue only when it reports a successful syntax check. - Restart or gracefully reload Apache through its service manager so the new sockets are opened. Typical commands are
sudo systemctl restart apache2orsudo systemctl restart httpd. Use the service name installed on your system. - Inspect the sockets rather than relying on a browser test:
ss -ltnp | grep -E ':(80|443)'
lsof -nP -iTCP:80 -sTCP:LISTENFor an IPv4-only setup, the output should show an address such as 127.0.0.1:80 or 127.0.0.1:443. A dual-stack loopback setup should additionally show [::1]:80 and, where configured, [::1]:443. It should not show 0.0.0.0:80, the machine’s LAN address, a public address, or an unintended wildcard IPv6 address.
Bind MySQL to localhost
Use bind_address when local TCP is needed
In the option file read by the running server, place the setting in the [mysqld] group:
[mysqld]
bind_address=127.0.0.1This is a startup setting. Save the file and restart MySQL using the operating system’s service manager, for example sudo systemctl restart mysql or sudo systemctl restart mysqld. A reload that does not restart the server will not necessarily reopen the listening socket.
The setting permits TCP connections addressed to IPv4 loopback and rejects remote TCP connections. It does not automatically create an IPv6 ::1 listener. If local software connects over IPv6, configure an IPv6 loopback address using the syntax supported by your MySQL version and deployment, then verify that socket independently. Do not infer IPv6 behavior from an IPv4-only test.
Use skip_networking when TCP is unnecessary
If every local application can use a local transport, add this to [mysqld] instead:
[mysqld]
skip_networkingThis disables MySQL TCP/IP completely. Unix clients must use the MySQL Unix socket. Windows clients can use a named pipe or shared memory when those transports are enabled and configured. An application hard-coded to a host and TCP port will fail until its connection settings are changed.

Restart and inspect MySQL
- Restart the correct service after saving the option file.
- Check the classic port, normally 3306 unless your deployment changed it:
ss -ltnp | grep 3306
lsof -nP -iTCP:3306 -sTCP:LISTEN- For a
bind_address=127.0.0.1setup, expect127.0.0.1:3306and no LAN or public address. Forskip_networking, expect no TCP listener on the MySQL port. - Test the TCP path explicitly:
mysql --host=127.0.0.1 --protocol=TCP -u app_user -pThe explicit host and protocol are important. On Unix-like systems, mysql --host=localhost normally selects a Unix socket. A successful localhost login therefore does not demonstrate that the TCP listener is correctly bound or that its port is reachable.

Test from both the same computer and another machine
Local Apache tests
Request each configured loopback address directly instead of testing only a hostname:
curl -I http://127.0.0.1/
curl -g -I http://[::1]/The second command is needed only when IPv6 loopback is configured. For TLS, use the corresponding HTTPS URL and certificate options appropriate to your local certificate. A successful local request confirms that Apache accepts that loopback connection; it does not show whether another interface is exposed.
Local MySQL tests
Use the explicit TCP command shown above for IPv4. If your deployment has a supported IPv6 loopback listener, test it with the IPv6 loopback address and the client options required by that deployment. Separately test the Unix socket if your applications use socket connections.
Remote test
From a different machine on the LAN, try the server’s LAN address rather than its loopback address. An HTTP request to the LAN address should fail to connect when Apache is loopback-only. A MySQL client aimed at the server’s LAN address and port should likewise be rejected when MySQL is bound to loopback or has networking disabled.
Do not interpret every remote result as proof of a service listener. A firewall may report a port as filtered or refused, and a router, proxy, container port mapping, or another process may answer on a different address. Confirm the local socket table on the server and identify the owning process.
Why a remote connection can still succeed
A wildcard directive remains active
Search all Apache configuration files included by the active server for Listen 80, Listen 443, Listen 0.0.0.0:80, and wildcard IPv6 listeners. The file you edited may not be the file that defines the effective listener. Remove the wildcard line, keep only the intended loopback directives, run the configuration test, and restart.
The old process is still running
Changing a file does not change an already-open socket. Verify the process start time and repeat the socket check after the restart. If the service failed to restart, read its status and log output; do not assume the new configuration is active.

You are checking the wrong address family
An IPv4 check covers 127.0.0.1 only. A separate ::1, LAN, or wildcard IPv6 listener can still accept connections. Inspect the complete ss -ltnp output and test IPv4 and IPv6 separately. Conversely, a client that resolves a local name to ::1 will fail if you configured only IPv4.

Another instance owns the port
Use ss or lsof to identify the process ID and executable attached to the port. Apache documents that overlapping listeners can cause an address-in-use startup failure, and MySQL cannot start if it cannot bind its requested address. Stop or reconfigure the unintended instance before judging the loopback change.
A forwarding layer is exposing a different socket
A reverse proxy, container runtime, SSH tunnel, or port-forwarding rule can publish a local service through another process. Binding Apache or MySQL to loopback limits that particular server socket; it does not remove a separate forwarding path. Audit listeners and forwarding rules on the host and, for containers, remember that loopback inside a container is not automatically the host’s loopback.

These are separate controls. Loopback binding prevents the service from accepting a connection on a non-loopback interface at the socket layer. Firewall rules decide how packets reaching the host are handled and whether a probe is refused, dropped, or reported as filtered. A firewall can add defense in depth, but opening a firewall rule cannot make a loopback-only service reachable on a LAN address. Conversely, a firewall result alone does not prove that the service is bound correctly; always inspect the listener addresses.
Recovery when local applications stop working
- If the application uses a host and port, keep
bind_address=127.0.0.1and set its database host explicitly to127.0.0.1. Confirm that both programs agree on the MySQL port. - If you enabled
skip_networking, change the application to the MySQL Unix socket on Unix-like systems, or to the enabled named-pipe or shared-memory transport on Windows. The socket path must match the server’s configured path. - If browsers or local tools use an IPv6-resolving hostname, either configure the required IPv6 loopback listener or make the client use the IPv4 loopback address.
- If Apache fails after editing, run
apachectl configtestorhttpd -t, remove duplicate or overlappingListendirectives, and restart only after the test passes. - If MySQL fails to start, inspect the service log for a bind error, confirm that no other process owns the port, and verify that
bind_addressappears in the[mysqld]group rather than a client-only group.
FAQ
Does Listen 127.0.0.1:80 protect Apache from every remote connection?
It protects that Apache socket from connections arriving through LAN, VPN, or public interfaces. Check for additional Apache instances, reverse proxies, container mappings, port forwarding, and separate IPv6 listeners that could expose another socket.

Use 127.0.0.1 together with --protocol=TCP when you need to verify TCP. On Unix, localhost normally selects a Unix socket, so it tests a different transport.
Is bind_address=127.0.0.1 stronger than a firewall rule?
They solve different problems. Binding limits the addresses on which the service accepts sockets; a firewall controls packet handling. Use the binding as the primary service setting and a firewall as additional defense in depth.
When is skip_networking the better choice?
Choose it when no application, monitoring tool, or administrator needs MySQL TCP/IP. It removes the TCP listener entirely, but all clients must support and use a Unix socket, named pipe, or shared memory.
Why does Apache show “Address already in use” after I add a loopback line?
You probably left an overlapping directive such as Listen 80 or another process already owns the port. Remove duplicate or wildcard listeners, identify the owning process with ss or lsof, run the configuration test, and restart.
Do I need both 127.0.0.1 and ::1?
Only if local clients use both address families. IPv4 loopback does not automatically create an IPv6 listener. Configure and verify each address independently, or deliberately standardize clients on IPv4.
What should a secure socket check look like?
Apache should show only the intended 127.0.0.1 and optional [::1] ports. MySQL should show 127.0.0.1:3306 (or your chosen port) when TCP is enabled, and no MySQL TCP listener when skip_networking is active. There should be no 0.0.0.0, LAN address, public address, or unintended wildcard IPv6 entry.
Final localhost-only checklist
- Apache has explicit
127.0.0.1listeners for every required HTTP and TLS port. - IPv6 is either deliberately configured on

Can I bind Apache to localhost without changing virtual hosts?
The Listen directive controls socket binding, while VirtualHost controls request handling. Review virtual-host addresses so they match the loopback sockets, especially when you add a separate [::1] listener.
Why does a remote port scan show “filtered” instead of “closed”?
A firewall may silently drop or filter packets even when the service is loopback-only. Verify the actual local listener addresses with ss or lsof; scan results alone cannot identify which process is bound.

Use a hostname that resolves to the intended loopback address, then verify whether it resolves to 127.0.0.1, ::1, or both. A hostname resolving only to ::1 will fail if you configured IPv4 only.
Does restarting Apache or MySQL cost downtime?
A restart briefly interrupts the service, while a graceful Apache reload may reduce interruption. MySQL bind_address is a startup setting, so plan a restart and confirm the new socket afterward.
