How to Reset Settings on an iPad Without Erasing It

Reset All Settings returns iPad preferences to defaults without deleting data or media. Here is the exact path, what it changes, and which narrower reset fits your problem.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To reset your iPad’s settings without touching your photos, apps, or documents, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset > Reset All Settings. This returns preferences to their defaults and leaves your content in place. It is a different operation from Erase All Content and Settings, which wipes the iPad, so read the labels before you tap.

Steps to reset settings and keep your data

Apple’s current iPad User Guide, written for iPadOS 27, describes this path. Menu wording and which options appear can differ by iPadOS version, and school- or employer-managed iPads may hide some choices.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap General.
  3. Tap Transfer or Reset iPad.
  4. Tap Reset.
  5. Choose Reset All Settings, then confirm when prompted. Your settings return to their defaults, and your content and media stay on the device.

Do not choose Erase All Content and Settings if your goal is to keep your personal content. That option removes personal information, content, and settings and restores the iPad to factory condition.

If you may want your previous configuration back later, Apple recommends backing up the iPad’s settings before you reset. Apple’s guidance does not describe a separate purchased tool for this, so the built-in backup is enough.

Reset Network Settings Network configuration only Removes previously used networks and VPN settings not installed by a configuration profile or MDM. Wi-Fi turns off and back on, disconnecting the iPad. Wi-Fi and Ask to Join Networks stay on. The device name returns to “iPad,” manually trusted certificates become untrusted, and cellular data roaming may be turned off. Rejoin Wi-Fi networks and re-enter passwords. Rename the iPad if you had changed its name. Re-enable roaming and trust certificates if needed.
Delete All eSIMs Cellular eSIM profiles (Wi-Fi + Cellular models only) Removes all stored eSIMs. Set up a new eSIM or insert a physical SIM before you can use cellular service. This is a service-level change, not a general troubleshooting step.
Reset Keyboard Dictionary Typing Removes only words you added to the keyboard dictionary. Re-add custom words if you still need them.
Reset Handwriting Style Handwriting input Restores custom handwriting preferences to defaults. Not stated in Apple’s reset documentation.
Reset Home Screen Layout Built-in app icons Returns built-in apps to their original Home Screen arrangement. Rearrange any icons you want placed differently.

Profiles and management settings

Network settings installed by a configuration profile or device management (MDM) are not removed by Reset Network Settings. To remove them, go to Settings > General > VPN & Device Management. Removing a profile or management may also remove associated settings, accounts, or certificates. If your iPad belongs to a school or employer, ask the administrator before you change management settings.

Try a restart before resetting

Apple’s Reset All Settings support article advises restarting first when Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or another system feature misbehaves. If a restart does not help, resetting all settings can resolve problems caused by incorrect or damaged settings. Apple describes this step as rarely necessary, so treat it as a second-line fix.

Apple’s iPad User Guide puts it plainly: “You can return your iPad settings to their defaults without erasing your content.” That sentence describes Reset All Settings. Erase All Content and Settings is the separate choice that removes your data as well, so check the label on the screen before confirming any reset.
