On current iOS, go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. It removes saved network configuration, but it does not erase photos, messages, apps, or other iPhone content. You will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi and may need to check manually configured cellular or VPN details.
How to reset network settings on an iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Reset Network Settings and confirm if prompted.
This is Apple’s current menu path. If your screen differs, use the reset choices shown under General; menu wording can vary by iOS version. Check that you selected Reset Network Settings, not Erase All Content and Settings.

What happens when you reset network settings?
Apple describes this as removing network settings, not erasing the iPhone’s content. The effects are limited to network configuration, but you may have some setup to do afterward:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Previously used Wi-Fi networks and their passwords are removed, so you will need to join those networks again.
- VPN and APN settings that were not installed through a configuration profile or mobile device management (MDM) are removed. You may need to enter manually configured details again.
- Cellular settings are reset; cellular data roaming may be turned off.
- The iPhone disconnects from Wi-Fi as Wi-Fi switches off and back on. The Wi-Fi and Ask to Join Networks settings remain on.
- The device name returns to “iPhone.” Manually trusted certificates, such as website certificates, become untrusted.
Apple lists Wi-Fi networks and passwords, mobile settings, and VPN and APN settings among the affected categories in its Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance. Exact behavior can depend on carrier and management configuration, so check any manual settings you rely on after the reset.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
What it does not erase
Reset Network Settings is not Erase All Content and Settings. Your photos, messages, apps, and other iPhone content are not erased by this network reset. Apple distinguishes resetting settings without erasing content from erasing all content and settings in its iPhone reset guide. Read the option name carefully before confirming: the full-content erase is a separate, much more consequential choice.
Work, school, and managed VPN settings
A VPN installed through a configuration profile or MDM is not removed by Reset Network Settings. Removing a profile or management is a separate action and may also remove other settings, accounts, or certificates. If your school or employer configured your network, Apple advises consulting its network administrator before resetting.

What to try before resetting
Apple recommends trying other Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps first because they have a smaller impact than removing saved network configuration:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Check that Wi-Fi is on and Airplane Mode is off.
- Check Wi-Fi Assist and restart the iPhone if the Wi-Fi setting is greyed out.
- Consider whether VPN or security software is affecting the connection, and check the router or network.
Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting steps advise resetting network settings only if other solutions fail. If the iPhone connects to Wi-Fi after the reset but still cannot reach the internet, contact your internet service provider.

How this reset differs from other reset choices
| Action | Scope | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Check Wi-Fi, Airplane Mode, or router settings | Targeted troubleshooting | Does not remove saved network settings. |
| Reset Network Settings | Network configuration | Removes saved network settings; content remains on the iPhone. |
| Reset All Settings | Broader set of preferences | Broader than a network reset; it is a different reset option. |
| Erase All Content and Settings | Device content and settings | Erases content; do not select this when you only intend to fix a network issue. |
Apple’s reset guide explains the distinction between resetting settings and erasing content. Use the narrowest action that matches the problem.
