Apple documents controls for Space navigation and display behavior, but not a full Dock-preference deletion as an official Mission Control reset. Start with reversible settings and Space management; treat Terminal resets as later, more disruptive options.
Confirm what is actually not working
Press Control–Up Arrow, or use the Mission Control keyboard shortcut you have configured. You can also try your configured trackpad gesture, mouse control, or dragging a window to the top of the screen if that option is enabled. Apple lists these ways to open Mission Control and notes that shortcuts and gestures can be changed in settings: View open windows and spaces in Mission Control on Mac.

If you use more than one display, check the display where you invoked Mission Control before concluding that Spaces are missing. Apple explains: “If you enter Mission Control on a second display, only the open windows and spaces you’re working with on that display are shown.”
Also distinguish an unexpected desktop change from a failure to switch. macOS can automatically rearrange Spaces or move you to the Space containing an app’s open windows, depending on your settings. Check those options before attempting a reset.

Check Mission Control settings first
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Desktop & Dock, then scroll to the Mission Control section. Labels or layout can vary by macOS version, but review these controls:
- Automatically rearrange Spaces based on most recent use: If enabled, desktops may change order as you use them. Turn it off if you want their order to remain stable.
- When switching to an application, switch to a Space with open windows for the application: When enabled, selecting an app can take you to another desktop where that app has windows. This is expected behavior, not necessarily a Spaces fault.
- Displays have separate Spaces: This affects how Spaces behave across multiple displays. Apple notes that this setting also affects Dock availability across displays and is required for Split View on other displays or Stage Manager.
- Shortcuts and gestures: Confirm the assigned keyboard shortcut or trackpad gesture if Mission Control will not open or Space navigation does not respond as expected.
- Drag windows to top of screen to enter Mission Control: Check this option if you expect dragging a window to open Mission Control.
Apple documents these Mission Control controls in its Desktop & Dock settings guide. Prefer changing the relevant option here over deleting preferences in Terminal.
Navigate, recreate, or remove a Space in Mission Control
If the problem is one misplaced or unwanted desktop, use the visible Space controls rather than resetting all Dock preferences. Apple’s guide to working in multiple Spaces explains how to create, navigate, assign apps to, and delete Spaces.

- Open Mission Control using your configured control.
- To create a desktop, use the add control in the Spaces bar.
- Switch Spaces with a three- or four-finger trackpad swipe, a Magic Mouse swipe, Control–Left Arrow or Control–Right Arrow, or by clicking a Space thumbnail.
- To remove a Space, move the pointer over its thumbnail in the Spaces bar and use the close control that appears.
When deleting a Space, Apple says: “If the space contains open windows, they are moved to another space.” Recreate a desktop through Mission Control if you need a replacement; deleting one Space is a local, visible change rather than a broad preference reset.
Restart Dock only if settings and Spaces do not resolve it
Dock is involved in macOS desktop and app-switching behavior, so restarting its process is sometimes suggested as a troubleshooting step. However, Apple’s support guides describe Mission Control controls and Spaces management; they do not present a Dock restart as an official Mission Control reset.
A Sonoma-era community discussion reports mixed results: one respondent said force-quitting Dock and Dock Extra restored Dock, app switching, and Mission Control for them, while another said killall Dock did not help. That makes a Dock restart a possible, low-impact attempt—not a guaranteed fix. Save your work first. In Terminal, you can run:

killall Dock
macOS normally relaunches Dock after it exits. The command is community troubleshooting guidance for this symptom, not an Apple-prescribed repair.
Use a targeted Terminal preference reset only for Space rearrangement
If the specific issue is automatic Space rearrangement and the System Settings toggle does not resolve it, a third-party macOS defaults reference documents the mru-spaces preference. The reference lists testing from Mojave through Sequoia; it does not establish behavior on later macOS versions. Prefer the settings interface unless you have a clear reason to use Terminal.
The documented command deletes that individual preference key, then restarts Dock:

killall Dock
This is third-party guidance, not an Apple-documented reset. The corresponding user-facing control is the automatic Space rearrangement option in Desktop & Dock settings. The reference and its stated version coverage are available at macOS defaults: mru-spaces.
Avoid deleting all Dock preferences as a first-line reset
A community user reported running defaults delete com.apple.dock followed by killall -9 Dock and described it as a “shotgun approach.” The report says the broad reset removed Dock settings and pinned icons. This is anecdotal, not an Apple-published fix, and it can cost you custom Dock configuration.

Do not use the full preference-domain deletion just because Spaces appear out of order or a shortcut is not working. Try the specific settings and Space controls first. If you are considering a broad reset, document or back up your Dock setup so you can restore customizations afterward.
Verify Mission Control and Space switching
After changing a setting or restarting Dock, check the actual behaviors that were failing:
- Open Mission Control with your configured keyboard shortcut or gesture.
- Switch desktops with Control–Left Arrow or Control–Right Arrow, or click a Space thumbnail.
- Check the Spaces bar on each display; with separate Spaces enabled, Mission Control on one display shows that display’s windows and Spaces.
- Select an app with open windows and note whether macOS switches to its Space. If it does, review the “switch to a Space with open windows” option.
- Check that the order of desktops behaves as intended after reviewing automatic rearrangement.
This is a practical check based on Apple’s documented controls and Space behavior, not a separate Apple reset protocol.
