Choose the Gigabyte TRX50 AERO D if your build needs its four M.2 connectors, eight SATA ports, or two rear USB4 Type-C ports. Choose the ASUS Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI if its PCIe slot arrangement and other onboard I/O better suit your cards and peripherals. Both are sTR5/TRX50 workstation boards with four-channel DDR5 ECC Registered memory support; neither specification sheet establishes a real-world performance or reliability advantage.
What is the practical difference?
The clearest distinction is connectivity. Gigabyte’s TRX50 AERO D Rev. 1.2 specifications list more M.2 and SATA connectors, plus two rear USB4 ports. ASUS’s Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI has fewer M.2 and SATA connections, adds a SlimSAS NVMe connection, and uses a different PCIe slot layout. Both list 10GbE and 2.5GbE wired networking.

Which board suits your storage and peripheral plan?
Choose Gigabyte for more listed onboard drive connections
The AERO D’s four M.2 connectors and eight SATA ports make it the stronger match on paper for a build that expects several internal drives. It also provides two rear USB4 Type-C ports, useful if your workflow depends on USB4 peripherals. Check the manual for drive dimensions and lane-sharing behavior before planning to fill every connector.

Choose ASUS if SlimSAS or its rear USB mix fits better
The ASUS board lists three M.2 slots, four SATA ports, and a PCIe 4.0 x4 SlimSAS NVMe connection. Its rear panel has one 20Gbps Type-C port and six 10Gbps Type-A ports, rather than the Gigabyte’s USB4 ports. Match those connections to the drives and devices you actually intend to use.
ASUS also lists a 27W PD/QC4+ front Type-C connector. Gigabyte lists an internal USB Type-C header, but the cited specification does not give a comparable power-delivery figure.

How should you compare the PCIe layouts?
Count electrical lanes, not just full-length connector shells. ASUS specifies five expansion connectors, including a PCIe 5.0 slot that operates at x8 and a PCIe 4.0 slot that operates at x4. Gigabyte lists three CPU-connected full-length slots, two at PCIe 5.0 x16 and one at PCIe 4.0 x16. A full-length slot is not necessarily wired for x16 bandwidth.

Before choosing, map each GPU, capture card, storage adapter, and other expansion card to a slot. Confirm spacing, bifurcation support, and the effect of populated slots in the manual for the exact board revision. Gigabyte says one of its x16 slots can accept a graphics card or NVMe SSD and identifies a preferred slot for one GPU.

Will your CPU and memory work as intended?
Both are sTR5 TRX50 boards, but the processor must appear on the support list for the exact board and BIOS version. Their manufacturers list Threadripper and Threadripper PRO families, with the family naming and support details presented on each product page; verify the exact CPU model rather than relying on the family name alone.
Each board has four DDR5 DIMM slots and supports quad-channel ECC Registered memory. Gigabyte states support for RDIMM and RDIMM-3DS, up to 1 TB total and up to 256 GB per DIMM. ASUS says supported memory type, speed, and module population depend on CPU and configuration. Use the current CPU-specific memory support list or QVL to choose modules and confirm achievable speed; a board headline alone does not guarantee a particular memory speed or capacity in every CPU configuration.

What else should you verify before buying?
- Exact model and revision: Compare the full product name and board revision on the listing and product label with the manufacturer specification page.
- Case fit: The boards are different dimensions and use E-ATX versus CEB labels. Check the case’s supported motherboard dimensions, clearance, and connector access; a format label alone does not establish fit.
- Drive sharing: Review supported M.2 lengths and lane-sharing rules before assigning drives to every M.2, SATA, or SlimSAS connection.
- Cooling and power: Size the case airflow, CPU cooling, and power supply for the selected processor and installed cards. The cited board specifications do not establish a universal cooling or power requirement for every build.
- Operating system and wireless region: Verify driver support for your OS. Wi-Fi 7 feature availability and 6 GHz use can depend on the operating system, module, and local regulations; theoretical channel-width figures are not real-world throughput guarantees.
- Current price and availability: Compare current listings for the exact model and revision, since specifications and availability can change.
Do the specifications show which board is faster or more reliable?
No. The manufacturer specification pages document connectivity and compatibility features, not comparative workload performance, temperatures, acoustics, stability, or failure rates. The matching 10GbE and 2.5GbE link rates likewise do not establish equal real-world throughput or driver quality. Choose based on verified configuration fit, then consult independent testing for any performance claim that matters to your workload.

The product in this comparison is the Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI. ASUS lists the Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI A separately, with different PCIe, M.2/SlimSAS, and rear USB configurations. In particular, the WIFI A’s two USB4 ports and additional storage features should not be attributed to the WIFI model. Confirm the suffix on the seller’s listing and board label; the separate product page is ASUS Pro WS TRX50-SAGE WIFI A specifications.
