How to Reset Mesh Wi-Fi: Troubleshoot First, Then Reset Safely

Diagnose whether the fault affects one device, one mesh point, or the whole network. Restart first, save your settings before a factory reset, and use the exact instructions for your mesh model.

Start by identifying whether the problem affects one device, one mesh point, or the entire network. Restart the affected equipment before considering a factory reset: a restart preserves settings, while a factory reset can erase them and force you to set up the network again. Before erasing anything, save your Wi-Fi name, password, and custom settings, then follow the instructions for your exact mesh model.

Restart or factory reset: which do you need?

These actions are not interchangeable. TP-Link explains that rebooting restarts a Deco without erasing its Wi-Fi settings, while resetting clears its configuration. TP-Link’s Deco instructions are specific to Deco, but the distinction is useful when deciding what kind of action to look for in any manufacturer’s app.

Action What it does When to consider it
Restart or reboot Turns equipment off and back on without intentionally erasing its saved configuration. A network restart causes a temporary interruption. As an early troubleshooting step for a device or network that is not responding.
Factory reset Erases settings or user data; the network or unit may need to be set up again. When problems persist after simpler troubleshooting, or when preparing to hand over or return equipment.

The exact effect and procedure depend on the brand and model. Do not use a reset-button timing found for another product as a substitute for your manufacturer’s instructions.

Find out where the problem is

First check whether the fault is limited to a client device, a satellite mesh point, or the whole network. Google’s troubleshooting guidance separates single-device connection problems from network and mesh-point problems; that distinction helps narrow what to inspect, but it does not prove the cause.

For more detail, see Google’s troubleshooting steps for a Nest Wifi Pro, Nest Wifi, or Google Wifi network that is not working.

Record the network state before changing anything

Note the lights on the main unit and satellites, which unit connects to the modem, whether each point connects by Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and where the outage occurs. TP-Link’s Deco instability guidance asks users to check LED status and provide network topology when investigating a problem. See TP-Link’s Deco disconnecting and internet instability guidance.

Before a factory reset, record the Wi-Fi network name and password and any custom settings you will need to restore. Google specifically recommends noting network details before resetting. A reset may interrupt internet access and require the router and points to be set up again; Google’s factory-reset instructions describe those consequences for Google Wifi and Nest Wifi devices.

Restart before erasing the configuration

Use the manufacturer’s app restart or reboot option if available, or power-cycle equipment according to the instructions for its model. eero recommends unplugging an eero, waiting 30 seconds, and plugging it back in before attempting a reset. That timing is eero guidance, not a universal rule for every mesh system. Read eero’s reboot and reset instructions.

If you restart the whole network, expect a temporary outage. eero says its network goes offline momentarily during a restart; TP-Link documents an app option to reboot all Deco units. A restart may help, but it is not a guaranteed fix.

Check firmware and placement if the fault remains

For Deco instability, TP-Link recommends checking the unit’s LED state, firmware, satellite position, and network topology. Review release notes before installing an update: TP-Link says to back up the configuration first if the notes indicate that the update will reset settings. Use firmware intended for the exact model and hardware revision. See TP-Link’s instability guidance and its Deco firmware update methods.

Factory-reset instructions differ by mesh system

Once you have confirmed that a factory reset is appropriate and recorded the details needed to rebuild the network, follow the live instructions for the exact model. These examples illustrate why reset procedures should not be generalized.

TP-Link Deco

TP-Link’s Deco guidance describes removing a unit in the app or pressing that unit’s reset button for one second. To reset the whole Deco system through the app, remove expansion units first and the primary unit last. If a reset fails, TP-Link says to unplug and reconnect the unit, wait two minutes, and try again. Follow the current Deco reset or reboot instructions for your device.

eero

eero distinguishes physical reboot, soft reset, and hard reset. Its page says to release the button when the LED flashes yellow for a soft reset, at no longer than eight seconds, or when it flashes red for a hard reset, at approximately 15 seconds. The page includes product-specific exceptions. A hard reset clears user data and logs and removes the unit from the network, so use the eero instructions for your model rather than applying those timings to another brand.

Google Nest Wifi and Google Wifi

Google’s factory reset erases current settings and data, interrupts internet access, and means the router and points must be set up again. The process can take several minutes. Google also notes that people managing devices with the Google Wifi app may need Google Home for setup after the reset. Check Google’s factory-reset instructions for the device and app you use.

Set up the network again and verify service

After resetting, use the setup flow for the exact device family. Confirm that the main router has internet access before adding satellite points. A factory reset cannot by itself resolve an internet outage from your provider, defective hardware, or wireless interference.
