How to Reset Gboard Settings Without Losing Your Phone’s Data

Reset Gboard at the right scope: clear cache first on Android, delete learned words separately when possible, and use iOS-specific dictionary or keyboard-list controls on iPhone and iPad.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can reset Gboard without performing a factory reset or intentionally deleting your phone’s photos, messages, apps, or other device content. On Android, start with Clear cache. If that does not solve the problem, Google’s next step is Clear data or Clear storage in Gboard’s app settings; Google describes that action as resetting Gboard to its default state. It is a Gboard-only operation, but it can remove Gboard-specific preferences and learned information.

If you only want to remove unwanted suggestions or learned words, do not clear all Gboard storage. Use Gboard’s dictionary controls instead. iPhone and iPad users have different controls: clear the dictionary inside Gboard, or remove and add the keyboard again through iOS Settings.

Choose the smallest reset that solves the problem

“Reset Gboard” can mean three different things. Choosing the correct level prevents unnecessary loss of keyboard personalization.

Action Where it applies Best use Effect on Gboard
Clear cache Android app settings Crashes, freezing, unresponsive typing, lag, or some voice-input problems Removes temporary files; it is the least disruptive storage action
Delete learned words Gboard’s Android dictionary controls Removing unwanted vocabulary or predictions while keeping other settings Deletes saved words from the device after confirmation
Clear data or Clear storage Android app settings Returning Gboard to its default state after lighter troubleshooting fails More disruptive; Gboard preferences and learned personalization may need to be configured again
Clear my dictionary Gboard on iPhone or iPad Removing the iOS keyboard’s saved vocabulary Clears the dictionary, not the Android-style app-storage area
Remove and re-add Gboard iOS keyboard list Gboard is missing, unavailable, or appears as “null” Refreshes keyboard registration in iOS

Google’s Android troubleshooting guidance lists cache clearing before app-data clearing. If preserving learned words, custom preferences, or other Gboard personalization is important, stop after the cache step or change the individual setting causing the trouble.

Before you reset: identify the actual goal

A few seconds of diagnosis can prevent a broader reset than necessary. A keyboard that crashes or lags points toward temporary data or an app problem. A single embarrassing prediction points toward learned-word deletion. A keyboard whose settings seem scrambled may justify clearing Gboard storage. On an iPhone or iPad, an absent keyboard is usually a keyboard-list problem rather than an Android-style storage problem.

  • Want Gboard to respond normally? Restart, update, and clear cache first on Android.
  • Want to remove vocabulary? Use Delete learned words on Android or Clear my dictionary on iOS.
  • Want a clean Gboard configuration? Use Clear data or Clear storage only after the narrower steps fail.
  • Want to change privacy behavior? Open Gboard’s Privacy settings and change the specific learning or personalization option instead of wiping unrelated settings.

If you use custom languages, shortcuts, themes, or other preferences, make a quick note of them before clearing storage. Google does not provide an item-by-item list of every setting that returns to default, so recording the settings you care about is safer than assuming they will remain.

Android: reset Gboard safely

1. Restart or update before changing storage

A temporary keyboard process can recover after a normal phone restart. Also check Google Play for a pending Gboard update if the issue began after a software change or has persisted through restarts. These checks do not alter Gboard’s saved data and are sensible before a storage reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Clear Gboard’s cache first

  1. Open Settings on the Android phone.
  2. Tap Apps. Some Android versions label this area Apps and notifications.
  3. Select Gboard. If it is not immediately visible, use the app list’s search field.
  4. Tap Storage and cache.
  5. Choose Clear cache.
  6. Return to a text field and test typing, predictions, and voice input if that was the failing feature.

Menu names and their position can differ by Android release and phone manufacturer, but the documented sequence remains the same in principle: Android Settings, Gboard’s app page, then its storage controls. Clearing cache removes temporary app data; it does not ask you to erase the phone or perform a factory reset.

Do not tap Clear data simply because it appears beside the cache button. Android may place both controls close together, and the second action has a wider effect on Gboard. Read the confirmation text before accepting either command.

3. Clear Gboard data only when a full keyboard reset is justified

If the problem remains after cache clearing, return to Settings > Apps (or Apps and notifications) > Gboard > Storage and cache. Tap Clear data or Clear storage, depending on the wording on your phone, and confirm the prompt.

Google’s official wording is: This resets Gboard to its default state. The control is inside Gboard’s storage page, so it targets the keyboard application rather than initiating a device-wide reset. Google does not provide an item-by-item inventory of every setting that returns to default; plan to review Gboard again afterward and restore the preferences you still want.

Because this action is broader than cache clearing, use it for persistent malfunctions, a badly corrupted configuration, or a deliberate return to factory-like Gboard settings. It is not the right first choice when your only goal is removing one offensive learned word.

4. Recheck Gboard after clearing storage

Open any app with a text field and bring up the keyboard. Verify that Gboard appears, that the correct language is available, and that the original symptom has gone. Open Gboard Settings from the keyboard and restore only the preferences you need. Learned suggestions may take time to become useful again because the keyboard’s previous on-device personalization may have been removed.

If another keyboard is active, use the keyboard-switch button or the system keyboard selector and choose Gboard. The exact icon varies by Android version and manufacturer. A reset of Gboard does not automatically mean the phone’s other apps or files have been reset.

  1. Open an app that lets you type, such as a message or notes field.
  2. Display Gboard, then open Gboard Settings. You can usually reach this from the keyboard’s toolbar or the gear icon.
  3. Tap Dictionary.
  4. Choose Delete learned words.
  5. Read the confirmation prompt and enter the number shown to confirm deletion.

Google says the saved words used for this personalization are kept only on the device and can be deleted through this control. This action is narrower than clearing Gboard storage: it targets learned vocabulary rather than resetting the entire app state.

Afterward, a word may be learned again when you repeatedly type it. Deleting the dictionary is therefore a cleanup step, not a permanent block on every future suggestion. If one term continues to appear, check the current suggestion bar and Gboard’s dictionary controls rather than repeatedly clearing all app storage.

“Delete learned words” and “Delete learned words and data” are not necessarily the same label

Google’s learning and privacy information also describes a control named Delete learned words and data under Gboard’s Privacy settings. Google presents it as clearing all on-device data Gboard has saved. Your version of Gboard may show the dictionary-only label, the broader privacy label, or different wording. Read the description on the screen and select the narrowest control that matches your goal; do not assume that two similarly named controls have identical scope on every release.

iPhone and iPad: use iOS-specific controls

Android’s Clear cache and Clear storage menus do not apply to Gboard on iOS. Google documents dictionary and keyboard-list actions instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Clear Gboard’s dictionary

  1. Open the Gboard app on the iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap Keyboard settings.
  3. Tap Clear my dictionary.
  4. Tap OK to confirm.

If Gboard was installed or managed through the Google app, open the Google app’s settings, select Gboard, then follow Keyboard settings > Clear my dictionary > OK. This clears the saved dictionary; it is not an Android app-storage reset.

Remove and add Gboard when it is missing or shows “null”

  1. Open iOS Settings.
  2. Tap General, then Keyboard, then Keyboards.
  3. Remove Gboard from the list.
  4. Use Add New Keyboard to add Gboard again.

When several keyboards are installed, hold the globe key while typing and select Gboard. This changes the active keyboard; it does not erase content stored in other apps.

Removing and re-adding the keyboard is useful when iOS no longer registers Gboard correctly. It is not a substitute for dictionary clearing when the only problem is unwanted vocabulary. Choose one action at a time, test the result, and avoid stacking multiple resets before you know which one helped.

What “without losing your phone’s data” really means

The documented Android procedure changes Gboard through its own app-storage controls. It is therefore different from an Android factory reset, which is a device-wide erase and setup operation. Clearing Gboard cache or storage is intended to affect Gboard’s state, not to wipe the phone’s general files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s help pages do not enumerate every category of phone data that remains untouched, so avoid treating the reset as an absolute guarantee about every file or account state. The practical distinction is scope: you are operating on Gboard, not selecting the phone’s factory-reset command. Before clearing storage, note any Gboard preferences or custom shortcuts you care about so you can set them up again if necessary.

Pay attention to the wording on the confirmation screen. A prompt referring to Gboard data or Gboard storage is different from a prompt referring to erasing all content and settings, resetting the device, or starting setup again. If the screen describes a device-wide action, cancel and return to Gboard’s app page.

Gboard learning and privacy after a reset

Google explains that Gboard saves typed words to improve spelling and predictions and that those saved words are stored on the device. Deleting learned words removes that on-device vocabulary. Google separately states that searches, usage statistics, and voice input used for transcription are sent to Google, while ordinary typed text other than searches and saved words is not sent according to its Android troubleshooting information. These are Google’s descriptions of product behavior and can change with a product update.

Google’s learning information says federated learning is enabled by default and can be turned off. It also describes on-device personalization and a control for deleting Gboard-saved on-device data. If you voluntarily donate audio snippets for product improvement, Google states: Google won’t keep these snippets beyond 18 months. That retention statement applies to those donated snippets, not to every kind of Gboard data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A reset is therefore not a substitute for reviewing privacy settings. If your concern is stored vocabulary, use the dictionary or privacy deletion control. If your concern is network transmission or personalization, open Gboard’s Privacy settings and change the specific option rather than clearing unrelated app data.

Common pitfalls and how to avoid them

  • Confusing cache with data: cache is the lighter first step; data or storage returns Gboard to its default state.
  • Using Android instructions on an iPhone: iOS has no equivalent Gboard storage page in Android Settings.
  • Deleting everything to remove one word: use Dictionary on Android or Clear my dictionary on iOS.
  • Assuming all settings will survive: Google does not list every setting affected by a full storage reset, so record important preferences first.
  • Testing in only one app: try a second text field to distinguish a Gboard issue from an individual app issue.
  • Forgetting the active keyboard: a different installed keyboard can make Gboard appear broken even when it is functioning normally.
  • Repeating deletion unnecessarily: once learned words are removed, test the keyboard before taking another destructive step.

Troubleshooting after the reset

The original typing problem remains

  • Confirm that the phone is actually using Gboard rather than another installed keyboard.
  • Reopen Gboard Settings and check that the affected language and input method are enabled.
  • Test in a second app. If typing fails in only one app, that app may be the source of the problem rather than Gboard.
  • Restart the phone after the reset and test again.
  • Check for a Gboard update in Google Play.

Gboard is not listed on Android

Use Android Settings’ app search, then check the system’s keyboard or on-screen-keyboard settings to see whether Gboard is enabled. Manufacturer labels vary, so the exact path can differ. If Gboard was disabled, enabling it is different from clearing its storage.

Predictions or personal words disappeared

That is an expected consequence of deleting learned words or clearing Gboard data. Re-enter important words as you type and review Gboard’s dictionary and personalization settings. Do not repeat the deletion step unless you intend to remove the newly learned vocabulary again.

The phone’s files or apps seem affected

Stop and identify which action was actually selected. Gboard’s Clear data or Clear storage control is not the same as the phone’s factory-reset option. If a broader system reset was started accidentally, cancel it before confirmation and consult the phone manufacturer’s recovery instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A decision checklist

  • Keyboard crashes, freezes, or lags: restart, then clear Gboard’s cache.
  • One or two unwanted words appear: delete learned words from Dictionary.
  • Gboard behaves as if its configuration is corrupted: clear Gboard data or storage, understanding that preferences and learning may need to be rebuilt.
  • Gboard is missing or says “null” on iPhone or iPad: remove and add it again under iOS keyboard settings.
  • Only the iPhone or iPad dictionary needs cleaning: use Gboard’s Clear my dictionary control.
  • You want to protect personalization: do not clear app data until cache clearing and targeted setting changes have failed.

The safest sequence is to start with the least destructive control that matches the symptom, test the result, and escalate only when necessary. A Gboard reset is an app-level maintenance step, not a replacement for—and not the same as—a factory reset of the phone.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will clearing Gboard data erase my photos, messages, or installed apps?

Google’s procedure operates from Gboard’s own app-storage screen and is not the phone’s factory-reset command. It resets Gboard, although Google does not provide an item-by-item list of every other category of device data that remains untouched. Read the confirmation screen carefully and never approve a prompt describing a device-wide erase.

Should I clear cache or clear storage first?

Clear cache first on Android. Google lists it before Clear data or Clear storage for crashes, freezing, lag, unresponsiveness, and some voice-input problems. Use the broader storage reset only if the lighter step fails or you deliberately want Gboard back at its default state.

Can I remove learned words without losing my Gboard settings?

Yes. On Android, open Gboard Settings, choose Dictionary, then Delete learned words and confirm with the number shown. On iPhone or iPad, use Gboard’s Keyboard settings and Clear my dictionary. These controls are narrower than clearing Android app storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between Delete learned words and Delete learned words and data?

Google describes Delete learned words as a dictionary control and describes Delete learned words and data in Privacy as clearing all on-device data Gboard has saved. Labels vary by version, so read the on-screen description and choose the narrowest option that meets your goal.

Why did my personal suggestions disappear after a reset?

Deleting learned words removes the vocabulary Gboard saved on the device. Clearing Gboard data or storage can also remove keyboard personalization and preferences. Re-enter important words and restore the settings you want instead of repeating the deletion.

How do I reset Gboard on an iPhone?

There is no Android-style Clear cache or Clear storage path. Open Gboard, tap Keyboard settings, choose Clear my dictionary, and confirm. If Gboard is missing or appears as null, remove it under Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and add it again.

Do I need a separate app or repair product to reset Gboard?

No. Google’s documented steps use Android Settings, Gboard’s own settings, or iOS keyboard settings. A phone accessory, storage device, or repair kit is not required for this software procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if Gboard still does not work after clearing storage?

Confirm Gboard is the active keyboard, check that the needed language and input method are enabled, test in another app, restart the phone, and check Google Play for an update. If the problem occurs in only one app, investigate that app rather than repeatedly resetting Gboard.

The Bottom Line

On Android, restart or update first, then use Clear cache. Delete learned words separately when vocabulary is the only problem. Choose Clear data or Clear storage only when you need Gboard returned to its default state and accept rebuilding preferences or personalization. On iPhone and iPad, clear the dictionary inside Gboard or remove and re-add the keyboard through iOS Settings. These are keyboard-level maintenance steps, not a factory reset of the phone.
