How to Reset an Old Chromecast: Model-Specific Steps and Troubleshooting

Chromecast reset steps vary by model. Learn when to reset, how to reconnect after changing Wi-Fi, and what a reset cannot fix.

To reset an old Chromecast, first identify its generation: the reset-button timing and LED cues differ across models. A factory reset clears the device’s data and settings and cannot be undone, so check the power, Wi-Fi, and HDMI connection first. Google’s factory-reset instructions list the procedures by model.

Before you reset: identify the Chromecast and the problem

Use the model name shown in Google Home, if the device is still accessible, or check its original packaging or product details. Do not use another generation’s button timing or LED cues: a Chromecast with Google TV, a Chromecast (1st gen), and a Chromecast (2nd gen), (3rd gen), or Ultra have different procedures.

A factory reset returns the device to factory defaults and erases its data. Google says the action cannot be undone. It may help with setup or network problems, but Google does not promise that a reset repairs hardware, restores discontinued support, or makes an incompatible app work again.

  • If the issue is a changed Wi-Fi network, follow the network steps below before choosing a reset.
  • If the TV shows no signal or a black screen, check the TV input, power, and HDMI connection first. Google’s no-signal and black-screen troubleshooting covers those symptoms.

Factory-reset steps by Chromecast model

Chromecast with Google TV

  1. Using the remote, open your profile, then select All settings.
  2. Go to System > About > Factory reset, then confirm.
  3. Alternatively, with the device powered, hold its button. Wait for the LED to change and release when it becomes solid white, following Google’s model-specific instructions.

Chromecast (2nd gen), Chromecast (3rd gen), and Chromecast Ultra

You can reset through Google Home if your phone is connected to the same Wi-Fi network that was used to set up the Chromecast. Open Google Home, select the device, and use its settings to choose the factory-reset option. The app reset may not be available if you cannot access that setup network.

Chromecast (1st gen)

Google Home can reset the first-generation Chromecast when your phone is on the network used to set it up. For a reset on the device, keep it powered and hold its button for at least 25 seconds or until the solid LED flashes red. Release after the LED blinks white and the TV goes blank. Because this model’s sequence differs from later devices, follow Google’s current instructions rather than relying on another model’s timing.

Reconnect after changing Wi-Fi

Google says Chromecast devices remember one Wi-Fi network at a time. What to do depends on whether the device can still reach its existing network:

  • It is still connected to the existing network: Google says you can use Google Home to forget that network, then set up the Chromecast on the new one.
  • It is no longer connected to the old network: Google’s guidance is to factory-reset the Chromecast and set it up again on the new network.

For the setup sequence, use Google’s instructions for connecting Chromecast to a new Wi-Fi network. If you cannot use the app-based reset, the model’s physical-button procedure above is an alternative.

Troubleshoot “Reconnect me,” no signal, or a black screen

“Reconnect me” on a first-generation Chromecast

For a first-generation device that shows “Reconnect me,” Google recommends unplugging it from HDMI and power, attaching the HDMI extender supplied with the Chromecast, and then reconnecting power. Google says the included extender may reduce Wi-Fi signal interference; it is a troubleshooting measure, not a guaranteed fix. See Google’s connection troubleshooting steps.

No signal or a black screen

Confirm the TV is set to the HDMI input used by the Chromecast and that the device has power. Then follow Google’s troubleshooting for a TV with no signal or a black screen. These symptoms alone do not establish that a factory reset is the right fix; use the model-specific checks before erasing settings.

What a reset cannot restore: first-generation support

Google says support for Chromecast (1st gen) has ended: it no longer receives software or security updates, and Google does not provide technical support for it. A factory reset does not change that status. Do not assume this applies to every Chromecast generation. Google’s separate statement that software and security updates continue for its latest existing devices is not a claim that first-generation support resumed; see its Chromecast history announcement alongside the first-generation support notice.

When to consider a replacement

If the device remains unusable after the appropriate power, HDMI, network, and reset checks, replacement may be more practical than repeated resets. Google describes Google TV Streamer as the device that replaces Chromecast. Whether it suits you depends on current availability, budget, and whether you want a remote and on-screen interface rather than the older casting-focused experience.
