If you mean an Oculus or Meta Quest headset, try Meta’s software update tool first, then hold the power button for 30 seconds to hard reboot. A factory reset is a last resort: it erases account information, downloaded games, and content stored on the headset. If you still need to reset, you can do it with the headset buttons, the paired Meta Horizon app, or—if the headset is lost or stolen—through your Meta Account.
Try these steps before a factory reset
Meta describes a factory reset as a last-resort way to solve device issues. Its support instructions recommend trying the software update tool first; Meta says the tool can update software even when the headset itself is unresponsive. If the issue remains, hold the headset’s power button for 30 seconds, until it turns back on, to perform a hard reboot. See Meta’s factory-reset instructions for the current guidance.

What a factory reset erases—and what to check first
A factory reset is irreversible. Meta says it removes account information, downloaded games, and content from the headset. Purchased or downloaded content remains associated with your account, but that does not mean every app’s locally stored save data will return after setup.

- Check cloud backup: Meta says cloud backup can save app data and settings. Confirm it is enabled and current, but do not assume every app backs up its local data.
- Charge the headset: Meta recommends having at least 50% battery before starting the reset.
These steps reduce avoidable risk; they do not guarantee that every app setting or save can be restored.

Choose the right reset route

Meta documents these options on its factory-reset support page. If the app route is unavailable because the headset is not paired, use the button procedure instead.

- Turn the headset off.
- Hold the power and volume-down buttons together until the boot screen loads.
- Use the volume buttons to highlight Factory Reset, then press the power button.
- Highlight Yes and press the power button to confirm.
The reset erases headset data as described above. Before confirming, make sure you are prepared to set up the device again.

- Open the Meta Horizon app.
- Tap Menu, then Devices, and select your headset.
- Choose Headset settings → Advanced settings → Factory reset → Reset.
If you cannot select the headset or it is not paired, reset it using the headset buttons instead.
How do I reset my Meta Quest without the app?
For a headset you can physically access, use the headset-button procedure above; it does not require app pairing. Remote reset is a separate option for a lost or stolen headset, not the usual troubleshooting route.

Remote reset for a lost or stolen headset
- Open your Meta Account device settings and select the headset.
- Choose Delete device data or Factory reset, then complete identity verification.
- Wait for the headset to come online. Meta says it resets the next time it connects and disappears from your device list when the reset is complete.

Meta’s Help Center has a notice that it is aware of issues affecting Quest 2, Quest 3, and Quest 3S and is working to resolve them. The notice does not describe the symptoms, so it does not establish whether a particular problem is related or whether a factory reset will fix it. If your headset is affected, select the exact device in Meta support and follow its current instructions before erasing data.

A Meta developer issue record describes an older Quest 1 pairing and update issue after factory reset and says a fix shipped on July 30, 2025. That historical report does not establish Quest 1’s current support status or explain other setup problems. See the Meta developer issue record.
What a reset can—and cannot—promise
A reset removes specified data from the headset and gives you a fresh setup process; it is not a guaranteed performance fix. Meta’s published instructions do not establish that factory resetting generally improves headset speed or performance. For ongoing problems, use Meta’s support flow for your exact device and symptom rather than assuming that another reset will help.
