How to Monitor Competitors on Instagram

Monitor competitors by choosing a small, relevant set of accounts, logging what they publish and change on a consistent schedule, and comparing equivalent periods. Public Instagram activity can reveal visible likes, comments, and content patterns; it cannot show competitors’ private reach, saves, link clicks, audience demographics, or sales. A spreadsheet is enough for occasional checks. Use a reporting tool when you need recurring comparisons or reports—and verify its account eligibility, metrics, history, and plan limits first.

Set up a useful competitor watchlist

Choose direct competitors that serve a similar audience or offer a similar product. You can also include a few aspirational accounts if their positioning or formats are relevant to your work. Keep the list small enough to review regularly; there is no universal ideal number.

For each account, create a dated baseline. Record the handle, visible follower count, bio and offer, link destination, pinned content, and date checked. Follower totals are only a snapshot, so repeated observations are more useful than one-time comparisons.

What to track on each review

Use the same fields and date ranges for every account. A spreadsheet can include:

  • Profile changes: bio, offer, link destination, pinned posts, and visible collaborations or launches.
  • Publishing pattern: post date, frequency, and format, such as Reel, carousel, or image.
  • Content choices: subject, apparent hook, caption structure, call to action, and repeated hashtags.
  • Visible response: public likes and comments where displayed, along with recurring questions or reactions in comments.
  • Observation date: when you checked the profile or post, so later comparisons have a clear time window.

Hootsuite describes competitor analysis in terms of post performance, posting frequency, post type, and hashtags. Its Instagram estimated-engagement measure is based on likes and comments, not private account Insights. Hootsuite’s competitor-analysis documentation explains its comparison dimensions and limits.

Turn observations into experiments, not copies

A popular post is a clue, not proof of why it worked. Look for patterns across multiple posts and similar time periods. Note recurring topics or formats, then write a hypothesis for your own audience—for example, “A short tutorial Reel about this recurring customer question may earn more saves than our current product-only posts.” Create an original variation and judge it using your own account’s analytics.

Comments can surface public questions, but they are not a representative customer survey. Similarly, visible engagement does not establish reach, conversions, or sales. Keep those limits attached to any conclusions you share internally.

Choose a review cadence and preserve history

Pick a cadence your team can sustain—weekly for active campaigns or less often for slower-moving categories—and use it consistently. Compare matching periods rather than a recent week for one account against several months for another. Update the watchlist when an account no longer represents a meaningful competitor.

If you plan to use a reporting tool, check its backfill rules before relying on historical trends. Hootsuite says it backfills up to 30 days after a competitor is added, but does not backfill the Followers metric. Add accounts before the period you intend to track if follower history matters. Hootsuite documents that backfill behavior here.

When a reporting tool is worth considering

For occasional monitoring, manual checks and a dated spreadsheet provide control without committing to a reporting plan. For recurring reports or grouped benchmarks, compare tools on the details that affect your workflow, not just the length of a feature list.

  • Which Instagram account types are eligible?
  • Which competitor metrics are actually available?
  • How many competitors or groups can you track?
  • How much historical data is available, and is it backfilled?
  • Can you produce the reports or exports your team needs?
  • Which plan includes the feature, and what is its current cost?

Vendor documentation describes capabilities, not independent product testing. The limits below are documented by the vendors and should be rechecked before purchase because plans and features can change.

Sprout Social Compare Instagram Business Profiles using public engagement and audience-growth reporting, including profile and post activity. The competitor report uses public data; privacy or account restrictions may prevent discovery or reporting. Sprout Social documentation
Semrush Social Tracker can show competitor posts and engagement, with views by individual competitor or all profiles. Its documentation says Social Tracker analyzes Instagram Business accounts. Semrush documentation
Agorapulse Its Competitors Report supports Instagram profiles and Facebook Pages. Competitor allowance depends on plan; confirm current packaging. Agorapulse documentation

The cited documentation does not provide a current, comparable pricing table, so compare present plan access and costs directly before choosing. Hootsuite’s own Instagram analytics collection has a separate connection requirement: an Instagram Business profile connected to a Facebook Page. That requirement concerns its owned-account analytics, not a claim that competitor data reveals private Insights. Hootsuite’s Instagram metrics documentation describes the owned-account requirement. Sprout likewise distinguishes its public-data competitor report from a Business Profiles report based on private data. Sprout explains the distinction.

Do not assume Instagram has a native competitor dashboard

A claim about a native Instagram “Competitive Insights” feature for comparing up to 10 competitors is not corroborated here by an official Meta or Instagram source. Its availability, eligibility, and setup are therefore not established. Do not build a monitoring workflow around it unless current official documentation confirms the feature for your account.

If your routine involves capturing public profile or post pages for a dated review, ScreenshotNeo offers a screenshot API and MCP server for developers. Its one-call example is below; see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://www.instagram.com/ -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie or consent banners as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and responses identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Screenshot captures are snapshots, not a substitute for Instagram Insights or a source of private competitor metrics. Visit ScreenshotNeo for details, or sign up free for 1,000 screenshots a month with no card.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I see a competitor’s Instagram reach, saves, or link clicks?

No. Competitor monitoring tools described here rely on public information; private account Insights are not exposed by public engagement counts.

How many competitors should I monitor?

There is no universal target. Start with a list you can review consistently, then remove accounts that no longer represent a useful comparison.

Should I use visible engagement as a target for my own account?

No universal engagement-rate target is established here. Use visible competitor activity to form content hypotheses, then evaluate them with your own account analytics.
