To reset Task Manager’s preferences in Windows 11, open Task Manager, select Settings, choose Reset all settings to default, and confirm. The reset changes Task Manager’s own options for your user account. It does not reset Windows, and it will not fix every Task Manager problem. If the app crashes when you open its Settings page, use the file-based workaround described below.
Reset Task Manager settings from the Settings page
This is the method to try first. It works only if Task Manager opens and its Settings page loads.

- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Microsoft’s system configuration tools overview lists this shortcut for opening Task Manager.
- Select Settings in Task Manager.
- Select Reset all settings to default.
- Confirm by selecting Reset.
The menu path and button labels come from an ElevenForum Windows 11 tutorial published January 24, 2024 and updated September 6, 2024. Microsoft does not publish a reset-specific procedure for this option, so labels may shift as Windows builds and Task Manager updates change the layout. If your labels differ, look for a reset option on the Settings page and read it before confirming.
The same tutorial describes an alternate route: hold Ctrl + Shift + Alt while opening Task Manager. I could not confirm that shortcut in Microsoft documentation, so treat it as an unverified option and use the Settings page as the primary method.

If Task Manager crashes when you open Settings
A community answer on Microsoft Q&A attributes this symptom to a possibly corrupted settings file. The suggested fix is to rename that file so Windows can create a new one. This is community advice, not an official Microsoft procedure.
- Close Task Manager completely.
- Open the folder
%LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftWindowsTaskManager. Paste that path into the File Explorer address bar. - Rename
settings.jsonto a backup name such assettings.old. - Reopen Task Manager and check whether Settings now loads. The answer reports that Windows creates a fresh settings file automatically.
Renaming is safer than deleting. A separate Windows 11 tutorial on the same file notes that removing it also resets saved window size and position and column changes, so keep the backup until you have confirmed the fix. If you want the original layout back, rename the backup to settings.json after closing Task Manager.

When the message says an administrator disabled Task Manager
If Task Manager will not open at all and shows a message that your administrator has disabled it, you are dealing with an access policy, not a preference. Resetting settings will not help. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for this message directs you to check Local or Domain Group Policy and related registry policy settings. On a work or school device, the organization usually controls those settings, so the change has to come from the IT administrator.
Choosing between the two methods
| Situation | Method | Reversible? | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Task Manager opens and Settings loads | Settings page reset | Yes, through normal use of Settings | Official Windows-interface path; labels may vary by build |
| Settings crashes or hangs | Rename settings.json |
Yes, if you keep the backup | Community-sourced fix; also resets window size, position, and columns |
| Message says an administrator disabled Task Manager | Not a settings reset | Not applicable | Check Group Policy or registry policy, or ask IT |
