What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Most slow Windows 11 PCs are slowed by one or two specific things: a nearly full drive, too many programs starting at sign-in, a pending update, or a machine that is simply old. The fastest way to speed up your PC is to find which of these applies, then work through the built-in fixes in that order. Start with the free checks below and stop as soon as the problem is gone.
Why your Windows 11 PC feels slow
Slowdowns usually have more than one cause at once. The most common are low storage space, background and startup apps, outdated software, malware, and aging hardware. Microsoft’s performance guidance is clear that you should check symptoms and resource use before changing settings, because a tweak that targets the wrong cause wastes time and can make the machine harder to live with.

Look for these signs:
- The PC takes a long time to reach a usable desktop after sign-in.
- Common tasks such as opening apps, browsing folders, or switching windows lag.
- The fan runs loudly for no obvious reason.
- CPU, memory, or disk usage stays high even when you are not doing much.
- The system drive is close to full.
Step-by-step: the order to work through
Work through these steps in sequence. Each one is free and reversible.
1. Install updates and run a quick scan
- Open Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Install any pending updates, then restart if Windows asks you to.
- If you want to check optional updates, select Advanced options > Optional updates, install only what applies to your hardware, and restart.
- Open Windows Security, go to Virus & threat protection, and run a Quick scan.
Microsoft names outdated software and malware among the possible contributors to slow performance, so these steps address causes that are easy to rule out.
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
2. Find the bottleneck in Task Manager
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If it opens in compact view, select More details.
- On the Processes tab, sort by CPU, Memory, or Disk to see which resource is saturated.
- On the Performance tab, check whether CPU, memory, or disk stays near its maximum while the PC is idle.
- Open the Startup apps tab to see which programs launch at sign-in and what impact each one has.
Close only programs you recognize and are not using. Ending an unfamiliar process is the most common way people cause new problems, so look up anything unknown before you act on it.
3. Free storage and reduce background load
- Open Settings > System > Storage to see which categories use the most space.
- Turn on Storage Sense from the same page, or select it to run it now. Review the temporary files and cleanup recommendations before you confirm anything.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall programs you no longer use.
- Go to Settings > Apps > Startup and turn off startup apps you do not need at sign-in. Leave security software and anything you recognize as essential enabled.
- Only adjust background permissions for apps whose background activity you can confirm is unnecessary.
Storage Sense can remove temporary files and, under default settings, Recycle Bin content after a period. Downloads and cloud-synced files are not touched unless you configure it to do so. Storage Sense works on the system drive.

4. Adjust visual effects and power mode, with trade-offs
Windows animations and transparency use some system resources. You can reduce them by searching for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows and selecting Adjust for best performance. This makes Windows look plainer, so you may prefer to keep some effects enabled.

The Best performance power mode is found under Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode. Microsoft warns that it can increase power use, drain a laptop battery faster, and make the device warmer. Treat it as an experiment for a plugged-in desktop, not a default for a laptop you carry around.

5. Optimize drives and restart
Search for Defragment and Optimize Drives and run it on your system drive. Microsoft recommends this built-in tool over third-party utilities for drive optimization. Once the steps above are complete, close any apps you do not need and restart the PC. A restart clears memory and applies pending changes, and it lets you judge whether the slowdown has actually gone.
Common trade-offs at a glance
| Option | Where to find it | What it helps with | Trade-off to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update and optional updates | Settings > Windows Update | Outdated software issues | Restart required for some updates |
| Quick scan | Windows Security > Virus & threat protection | Malware as a possible cause | Takes a few minutes; a full scan takes longer |
| Storage Sense and uninstalling unused apps | Settings > System > Storage; Settings > Apps | Low free space on the system drive | Review cleanup items before deleting |
| Disabling startup apps | Settings > Apps > Startup | Long sign-in time | Some apps may need to be opened manually later |
| Adjust for best performance | Search: Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows | Visual effects load | Plainer appearance |
| Best performance power mode | Settings > System > Power & battery > Power mode | Responsiveness on plugged-in devices | Higher power use, faster battery drain on laptops, more warmth |
Storage and external drives
If Windows needs more room to install an update and your internal drive is full, Microsoft’s guidance on freeing up space for Windows updates says you can use external storage. The external device should have at least 10 GB free. This is a capacity fix for updating, not a speed fix: Microsoft does not state that an external drive will make Windows run faster, so do not expect a faster PC from one. Check that the device is compatible with your PC and that it has enough free space before you start the update.

When the problem is the hardware
If the same resource stays saturated after the steps above, open Windows Security and select Device performance & health to review the report. Then consider the PC’s age and hardware limits.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Microsoft’s performance guidance states that older PCs with outdated hardware may not see significant improvements from these steps. Signs that a machine is struggling include slow startup, slow common tasks, frequent fan noise, low storage, and consistently high CPU, memory, or disk use. In that case, software tuning has limits. Whether a RAM or SSD upgrade is practical depends on your specific computer. Check your model’s documentation for supported memory and storage before buying anything, and do not assume a particular part will fix the problem.
