How to Reset a Tripped Circuit Breaker Safely

Switch off or unplug devices, move the tripped breaker fully to OFF, then back to ON once. A repeat trip or signs of heat, burning or arcing calls for qualified help.

For a routine trip with no signs of damage, switch off or unplug devices on the affected circuit, then move the breaker handle fully to OFF and back to ON. If it will not stay on, trips again, or you notice heat, burning, or unusual sounds, stop and contact a qualified electrician.

How to reset a tripped breaker

  1. Reduce the load. Switch off or unplug appliances and lamps on the affected circuit, especially items that were running at the same time. The Electrical Safety Foundation International recommends reducing the load before resetting: ESFI home electrical safety.
  2. Find the breaker. At the electrical panel, look for a handle that is at OFF or sitting between ON and OFF. A tripped breaker may not be visibly all the way at OFF.
  3. Reset it once. Move the handle firmly all the way to OFF, then to ON. If it stays on, restore devices one at a time rather than immediately restarting everything at once.
  4. Stop if it trips again. Do not keep resetting a breaker that will not stay on or trips again. Have an electrician diagnose the cause.

When not to reset it

A breaker is a safety device that interrupts current when it exceeds a safe level. An overload, malfunctioning equipment, or a short circuit can cause a trip; the trip itself does not establish which cause is responsible. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises: “Investigate to determine why a fuse blows or circuit breaker trips.” See its CPSC Guide to Home Wiring Hazards.

Do not attempt a reset if there are burn marks, a hot panel or device, or buzzing or crackling sounds that could indicate arcing. If a suspect appliance can be unplugged safely, disconnect it; otherwise leave it alone. Contact a qualified repair professional for a suspect appliance, and an electrician for repeat trips or a possible wiring fault. Electrical Safety First lists burn marks, arcing sounds, tripping breakers and hot-to-touch equipment among warning signs, and advises that frequent trips be checked by a qualified electrician.

Why repeatedly resetting it is unsafe

Resetting restores power; it does not correct an overload, faulty appliance, short circuit, or wiring problem. A breaker that trips again is signaling that the underlying condition may still be present. Do not remove the panel cover, touch wiring, replace the breaker, or install a breaker with a higher rating. Those actions go beyond a homeowner-level reset and can defeat protection or expose you to electrical hazards.

What if a GFCI or RCD trips?

A GFCI, commonly named in the United States, or an RCD, commonly named in the United Kingdom, responds to ground-fault or residual-current conditions. It may be built into a receptacle or located at the panel, so its trip is not necessarily an ordinary overload from running too many appliances. If it repeatedly trips, leave it off and have the appliance or wiring fault investigated. Electrical Safety First recommends a registered electrician for repeated RCD trips: RCD guidance.
