To reset most Samsung refrigerator ice makers, remove the ice bucket if needed, press and hold the ice maker’s built-in rectangular Test button until it chimes or the mechanism moves, then reinstall the bucket. The button is not a universal control-panel shortcut: its position and the removal steps depend on the ice-maker design. If you cannot match the general steps to your fridge, identify its model and use its manual.
Find the right Test button for your ice-maker design
Samsung uses different procedures for freezer-door, top-freezer, bottom-freezer, refrigerator-compartment or side-by-side, and dual cubed/Ice Bites configurations. The Test button is generally a rectangular button on the ice maker, often at the bottom/front or underneath it. Access may require removing the bucket; some older freezer-door designs also require removing a cover. Samsung’s model-specific instructions are collected in its ice-maker reset guides.

Do not force a bucket or cover that does not come away as expected. Use the manual for your exact refrigerator model if the layout differs from these general directions.
Reset the ice maker safely
- Remove the bucket or cover as your model requires. Keep the bucket nearby so you can reinstall it after the test.
- Check the tray before testing. Do not repeatedly run the test if the tray already contains water or ice; Samsung warns that this can overflow the tray or jam the ice maker.
- Press and hold the rectangular Test button. Hold it until you hear a chime or see the mechanism move. Samsung’s US troubleshooting guidance says the button may need to be held for up to 10 seconds. The button’s precise location varies by configuration.
- If there is no chime or movement, power-cycle once. Turn the refrigerator off by unplugging it or switching off its circuit breaker for two minutes. Restore power, then retry the Test button. If the unit still does not respond, stop and request service.
- Reinstall the bucket correctly. Some buckets click into place. For the freezer-door design in Samsung’s guide, if the bucket does not seat, turn the rear gear handle 90 degrees and try again.
A successful test may trigger another chime. The test cycle is configuration-dependent: Samsung describes about six minutes for a refrigerator-compartment ice maker and about 30 seconds for a freezer-compartment unit. Follow the instructions for your design rather than treating either duration as universal. See Samsung’s ice-maker troubleshooting guide.

If the reset does not restore ice, check these conditions
Freezer temperature
Samsung’s US guidance says the freezer needs to be at 0°F or colder to make ice. If it is warmer, address the temperature or cooling issue first; a reset will not correct inadequate cooling.
Ice-maker setting
Confirm that ice production is enabled. The control method varies: some Family Hub models use Fridge Manager, while some SmartThings-capable models allow ice-maker control in SmartThings. Check the controls for your model rather than assuming every refrigerator uses the same menu.

Bucket, door, and clearance
Make sure the bucket is properly seated and that the freezer door closes fully. Keep the bucket clear of objects other than ice that could make the ice maker detect it as full. A misplaced bucket or a door that does not seal can interfere with operation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWater supply and flow
If the test runs but water does not reach the ice maker, check the household water supply and pressure. Samsung’s US troubleshooting page specifies at least 20 psi for the conditions it describes. For models with a dispenser, it also gives a flow check: 6 ounces (¾ cup) should dispense in less than 10 seconds.

If water flow improves when you remove the filter, Samsung says low pressure or an old filter may be responsible. Replace an old filter only when this diagnostic points to it, and match any replacement to the refrigerator’s exact model; Samsung recommends its own-brand filters. This is a water-flow troubleshooting step, not part of resetting the ice maker. See Samsung’s guidance on an ice maker that is not working.

Samsung Support UK says ice production may take up to 24 hours to resume after a reset. That is UK guidance, updated 3 August 2026, not a guarantee for every model or market. The same UK page says output varies with temperature, usage, and ice-maker type; do not use a general production figure as a promise for your refrigerator.
