For most problems, start with the least destructive reset that addresses the issue. On a Galaxy A23, resetting network settings or all settings preserves personal data; a factory data reset erases data stored on the phone. Before a factory reset, back up files, confirm the Google Account credentials linked to the device, and use the Settings route if available. Recovery Mode is an alternative when you cannot use Settings, but it also wipes the phone.
Choose the right kind of reset
“Reset” can refer to several operations with very different effects. The Galaxy A23 5G A236U manual distinguishes these options:

If you are troubleshooting, Google recommends trying other solutions before a factory reset. A reset is not a guaranteed fix for a particular fault; choose steps based on the symptom rather than wiping the phone by default.

Back up files you want to keep
Back up or transfer important photos, videos, documents, and other files before you proceed. Google says data backed up to a Google Account can be restored, while apps and their data are uninstalled by a factory reset. Check that anything you need has actually transferred; the A236U manual specifically advises verifying desired information before resetting. A compatible external storage device can be used for a local copy if you prefer, but it is optional and compatibility depends on the device and connector.

Check your account and screen lock
Make sure you know the username and password for the Google Account currently associated with the phone, along with its screen-lock PIN, pattern, or password. Google advises waiting 24 hours after changing your Google password before factory-resetting the phone; a recent password change may not yet be ready for account verification during setup.
Charge the phone and plan for setup
Google’s general Android guidance recommends charging to at least 70%, connecting to Wi-Fi or a mobile network, and allows that a reset may take up to an hour. Separately, AT&T’s Galaxy A23 5G Recovery Mode instructions call for at least 30% battery for that procedure. These are recommendations from different sources and contexts, not a single Samsung-wide battery rule.

Check an encrypted SD card
If an encrypted SD card is installed, decrypt it before resetting. The A236U manual warns that the phone cannot access an encrypted card after the reset. Although that manual says a factory data reset does not erase external SD-card data, this does not protect files stored on the phone or make an encrypted card readable afterward.
Factory-reset the Galaxy A23 from Settings
The Samsung Galaxy A23 5G A236U manual gives this path for its software. Menu names can differ by model or software version, so treat it as model-specific rather than universal.

- Open Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset.
- Review the information about what will be removed.
- Tap Reset and follow the on-screen prompts.
- After the phone restarts, continue through Android setup and verify the Google Account if requested.
Samsung’s India support page for the Galaxy A23 5G SM-A236E/DS lists manuals for Android 12, 13, and 14, illustrating why menu wording may not match across every A23 variant and software release.

AT&T documents the following Recovery Mode procedure for its Galaxy A23 5G. Because it is carrier-specific and A23 models vary by region, confirm instructions for your exact model and carrier before using a different button sequence. Recovery Mode does not preserve files or bypass account protection.

- Hold Power and Volume Down to open the power menu, then power off the phone.
- Hold Volume Up and Power until the screen turns on.
- Use Volume Down to highlight Wipe data/factory reset, then press Power to select it.
- Navigate to Factory data reset and confirm with Power.
- When the reset finishes, restart or continue as prompted, then complete device setup.
AT&T specifies at least 30% battery for this procedure. If the button combination or recovery menu differs, stop and check the instructions for your model instead of guessing.
Complete setup and handle account verification
On the A236U, signing in to a Google Account and setting a lock screen automatically enables Google Device Protection. The manual says this protection can require Google Account information to verify identity after an unauthorized factory reset. Have the account credentials ready during initial setup. It also notes that a recently reset Google password may take 24 hours to sync to devices.
If you own the phone but cannot verify the account, use Google Account recovery or contact Samsung support. Do not use a reset as a way to bypass ownership checks.
Check your exact Galaxy A23 model
The A23 family includes multiple variants, and the detailed reset instructions above are based on the A236U manual and an AT&T carrier guide for the A23 5G. Before following a procedure, check your model number and software version in the phone’s settings or on its documentation. Samsung’s Galaxy A23 5G SM-A236E/DS support page provides manuals for Android 12, 13, and 14; a regional support page may not cover every market or carrier variant.
