There is no confirmed universal button sequence for resetting every Pioneer AV receiver. Check the model number on the receiver, try a restart first if it is misbehaving, and use the matching factory-reset steps only when needed. A restart keeps settings; a factory reset restores defaults.
Before you reset: find the model and choose the right action
Check the model number on the receiver’s faceplate or rear label. Pioneer’s owner’s manual search lets you look up documentation by model. The controls differ even among the three models covered below, so do not assume another Pioneer receiver uses the same sequence.

- Restart: Power-cycles the receiver without erasing settings. Pioneer recommends trying this first when the unit is behaving erratically.
- Factory reset: Restores the receiver’s defaults. Record your current settings before proceeding, since you may need to set the receiver up again.
For the procedures below, exit Initial Setup before starting a factory reset. During the reset, do not unplug the receiver while “Clear” remains on its display.

Try a restart first on the VSX-935 or VSX-LX305
Pioneer gives the same restart procedure for these two models, and says their settings are kept:

- Put the receiver in standby and wait at least five seconds.
- On the main unit, hold STANDBY/ON for at least five seconds, then restart the receiver.
Pioneer’s instructions for the VSX-935 also suggest disconnecting and reconnecting the receiver’s power or HDMI cables, along with those of connected devices, if the issue continues after restarting.
Factory-reset instructions by model
Pioneer VSX-935
- Record your settings and exit Initial Setup.
- Turn the receiver on.
- On the input selector, hold ZONE 2-CONTROL and press STANDBY/ON.
- When “Clear” appears, let the process finish. The receiver returns to standby; do not remove power until “Clear” disappears.

Pioneer VSX-LX305
- Record your settings and exit Initial Setup.
- Turn the receiver on.
- On the main unit, hold ZONE CONTROL and press STANDBY/ON.
- Wait for “Clear” to disappear before unplugging the power cord.

Pioneer VSX-835
- Exit Initial Setup.
- Turn the receiver on.
- On the main unit, hold AUTO/DIRECT and press STANDBY/ON.
- When “Clear” appears, allow the reset to finish. The unit returns to standby; do not unplug it until the message disappears.

If resetting does not fix the problem
Consult troubleshooting guidance for the exact model rather than repeating a button sequence intended for another receiver. If the fault remains, Pioneer’s US repair page says its factory repair service covers car electronics and directs owners of other Pioneer products to Pioneer Home or Pioneer DJ.
