On Windows 10 or 11, press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B to reset the graphics-driver/display stack. You may hear a beep and see a brief flicker or black screen. This does not delete files, uninstall the driver, reset overclocking, or return the physical graphics card to factory condition. Microsoft documents the shortcut for blank-screen and flickering problems on Windows 10 and Windows 11 (Microsoft blank-screen guidance).
Choose what “reset the GPU” means
“Reset” can describe several different operations. Use the least disruptive one that matches the problem.

| Operation | Use it for | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Graphics-driver reset | Temporary black screen, flicker, or a hung game while Windows still responds | Reinitializes the Windows graphics stack; does not remove the driver or erase files |
| Settings reset | Bad color, performance profile, overclock, undervolt, or game profile | Returns vendor software settings to defaults; procedure differs by vendor |
| Driver rollback/update | Problems after an update, missing fixes, or a Device Manager error | Changes the installed driver package |
| Driver reinstall | Suspected corruption or repeated driver crashes | Removes and installs the driver again; installer options vary |
| Windows restart | The desktop or driver remains unstable | Reloads Windows and all drivers |
| Power cycle | The entire computer is unresponsive | Forces hardware and software off; unsaved work can be lost |
| NVIDIA compute reset | Supported administrator/data-center recovery | Stops and reinitializes a selected GPU under strict workload and privilege conditions |
None of these is the same as Windows “Reset this PC,” which resets the operating system.

Reset the graphics driver first
- Press Win + Ctrl + Shift + B at the same time.
- Wait several seconds. A beep, brief flicker, or short black screen is normal; sometimes there is no visible response.
- Try the affected application again. A game may still need to be closed and relaunched because its rendering state was not rebuilt.
The shortcut is not guaranteed to recover a completely frozen computer, a disconnected display, or defective hardware. It also does not undo BIOS settings, GPU tuning, vendor profiles, or a damaged driver. Windows’ deeper Timeout Detection and Recovery process can reinitialize graphics hardware after a driver timeout, but repeated timeouts require investigation (Microsoft TDR documentation).

If the screen is black
Check the signal path
- Confirm that the monitor and computer are powered on.
- Select the correct HDMI, DisplayPort, USB-C, or other input on the monitor.
- Reseat the cable at both ends; test another cable, port, or monitor if available.
- Disconnect docks, adapters, and extra monitors, then test one direct connection.
- Press Win + P and cycle through the display modes.
Check whether Windows is still running
Press Ctrl + Alt + Delete. If the security screen appears, Windows is responding. From there you can open Task Manager or restart. If only the desktop shell is blank, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, find Windows Explorer, and choose Restart.
On a laptop, disconnect an external display to see whether the built-in panel returns. Remote Desktop, virtual machines, and cloud workstations use virtual display adapters, so the local shortcut may not repair the remote session’s graphics path.
Diagnose screen flicker
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- If Task Manager flickers too, a display-driver problem is more likely.
- If Task Manager stays stable while the rest of the screen flickers, an incompatible application or overlay is more likely.
This distinction follows Microsoft’s Windows flickering guidance (Microsoft flickering troubleshooting).

Restart, roll back, or reinstall the driver
Restart normally
Use Start → Power → Restart, or choose restart from the Ctrl + Alt + Delete screen. A normal restart is safer than repeatedly holding the power button.
Roll back after a recent update
- Open Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the adapter and choose Properties.
- Open the Driver tab and select Roll Back Driver.
- Restart Windows.
The button is unavailable when Windows has no previous driver package. If the fault predates the latest update, install a supported package from the computer manufacturer or GPU manufacturer instead. Laptop systems with switchable integrated and discrete graphics generally work best with the laptop maker’s packages. AMD provides Windows driver support and an auto-detect tool (AMD driver support); Intel documents rollback and reinstall guidance (Intel graphics support).
Use Safe Mode when normal Windows is unusable
- Enter Windows Recovery.
- Select Troubleshoot → Advanced options → Startup Settings → Restart.
- Choose Safe Mode or Safe Mode with Networking.
- Roll back, uninstall, or reinstall the display driver, then restart normally.
Perform a clean installation
Download the official package for the exact GPU and Windows version. Close games, browsers, video players, monitoring tools, and overclocking utilities before installation; NVIDIA specifically warns that such programs can interfere with setup (NVIDIA clean-install instructions). AMD lists installation, uninstall, Cleanup Utility, and Bug Report Tool resources (AMD Software support). Use third-party cleaning utilities only when the vendor’s documented process cannot resolve the problem.

Reset NVIDIA settings or reinstall its driver
NVIDIA does not provide one universal “reset GPU” button across every Control Panel and NVIDIA App version. Open NVIDIA Control Panel, locate the setting or application profile you changed, and return it to its default or application-controlled value. Restart the affected game or program; NVIDIA notes that some 3D-setting changes take effect only after the program restarts (NVIDIA Control Panel help, 3D settings reference).
If the driver itself is unstable, run NVIDIA’s current official installer and select its clean-install option when offered. This resets the driver installation, not BIOS configuration or physical hardware.
Reset Intel graphics
Intel graphics interfaces vary by system, so use the supported driver path rather than assuming a single control-panel reset. Roll back in Device Manager when the issue follows an update; otherwise install a current package from the computer manufacturer or Intel and reboot. The rollback option is disabled when no earlier package is available (Intel rollback guidance).

Advanced: NVIDIA nvidia-smi --gpu-reset
Do not use this as a routine gaming-PC shortcut. It is an administrator-level recovery operation for supported NVIDIA compute and data-center environments:
sudo nvidia-smi --gpu-reset
- Linux requires root privileges; Windows requires administrator privileges.
- No graphics, compute, monitoring, or display-server process may be using the targeted GPU.
- Use the appropriate
-ioption when targeting a specific device. - Workloads can be terminated, and a reset can affect other users sharing the device.
- Verify GPU health afterward. If it remains unhealthy, NVIDIA may require a node reboot or complete power cycle.
- MIG-enabled vGPU guests are not supported for this operation in the cited documentation.
NVIDIA describes the Windows implementation as a driver restart rather than the same low-level reset available in supported Linux/data-center configurations (NVIDIA System Management Interface documentation).
When a reset is not the answer
Stop repeating resets and test hardware when the fault survives a clean driver installation and reboot. Check another cable and monitor, GPU power connectors, temperatures and fan behavior, and any overclock or undervolt. If integrated graphics are available, test them; testing the GPU in another compatible system can isolate the fault.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Artifacts visible in BIOS or before Windows loads point more strongly to hardware than to a Windows driver.
- Burning smells, abnormal fan behavior, or power faults warrant shutdown and service.
- Possible causes include the power supply, motherboard, RAM, PCIe slot, monitor, adapter, or cable—not only the GPU.
A completely frozen system may require holding the power button as a last resort, accepting possible data loss. Disconnect power before opening the case, and never remove or reseat a GPU while the system is powered.
Quick decision guide
| Symptom | First action | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Game freezes but Windows responds | Win + Ctrl + Shift + B | Relaunch the game; then update or roll back the driver |
| Black screen with a powered computer | Check monitor input, cable, and Win + P | Try one display, then Recovery or Safe Mode |
| Flicker began after a driver update | Roll back in Device Manager | Clean-reinstall if it persists |
| Instability began after tuning | Restore vendor defaults | Remove BIOS tuning and test hardware |
| Artifacts before Windows starts | Power down and test hardware | Service or warranty diagnosis |
| Entire system is frozen | Attempt normal restart; force shutdown only if necessary | Safe Mode and hardware checks |
The Bottom Line
For an ordinary Windows display hang, start with Win + Ctrl + Shift + B. Escalate to cable checks, restart, driver rollback or reinstall, and vendor settings reset only when the symptom requires it. Reserve nvidia-smi --gpu-reset for supported administrator-managed NVIDIA systems, and treat persistent boot-time artifacts or power and thermal symptoms as hardware problems.
