How to Rerun a YouTube Gaming VOD: OBS vs. a Cloud Streaming Service

Rerun a gaming VOD on YouTube Live with OBS or a cloud service. Compare the workflows, configure an encoder stream, and check rights, DVR, and monetization issues.

To rerun a gaming VOD as a YouTube Live stream, either play the authorized video through OBS on a computer that stays on and connected, or use a cloud service that streams it from hosted infrastructure. OBS gives you local control and can reuse your existing scenes; cloud streaming removes the need to keep a streaming PC running. Neither approach guarantees viewers, monetization, or uninterrupted streaming.

Choose between OBS and cloud streaming

The main difference is where the stream runs. With OBS, your computer encodes and sends the VOD to YouTube. With a cloud service, the service sends the uploaded video from its own infrastructure. YouTube’s verified encoder directory describes OBS as open-source streaming software and lists Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous prerecorded-video streams. That listing establishes category fit, not current pricing, plan limits, or an endorsement.

Factor OBS on your computer Cloud streaming
What must stay available The computer running OBS and its network connection must remain available for the stream to continue. A local streaming PC is not needed for the broadcast; service details and limits depend on the provider.
Control and production Useful when you want to control playback locally or reuse OBS scenes and sources. May offer remote scheduling or automation, but exact features vary by provider.
Setup Configure a YouTube encoder stream, enter its stream key in OBS, load the VOD, and start streaming. Upload or select the video, connect the YouTube channel using its stream key, and configure the event using the provider’s current instructions.
Cost and limits OBS is described by YouTube as available at no charge; your electricity, hardware, and internet costs remain your responsibility. Check the provider’s current price, supported quality, storage, duration, and scheduling limits before buying. Current Gyre plan details are not established here.
Viewer rewind YouTube DVR settings apply to the live stream regardless of which method sends it.

For a one-off rerun when you can leave a suitable computer running, OBS is a direct route. If you want the broadcast to continue without keeping a computer on at home, a cloud service is the relevant category. Compare the provider’s current limits and cost with your local operating costs before choosing.

Prepare the VOD and YouTube channel

Check rights before scheduling

Rebroadcasting a VOD does not remove the need for permission. YouTube requires the rights needed for both live and archived content, including applicable music rights. Game footage monetization depends on the game publisher’s commercial-use permissions; extended gameplay without suitable permission or qualifying commentary may not be accepted for monetization. Review the publisher’s current streaming policy and check the VOD for licensed music before you schedule it.

Confirm live access and event settings

YouTube supports encoder-based streams and scheduled events. If you are enabling live streaming for the first time, activation can take up to 24 hours. You can create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and reuse stream settings. Review the scheduled event’s settings before the broadcast, including auto-start and auto-stop if you intend to use them.

A YouTube stream key connects OBS to the event; YouTube describes it as similar to a stream’s password and address. Keep it private. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update OBS with the replacement before going live.

How to rerun a gaming VOD with OBS

  1. Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream. Select the event and locate its stream key and stream settings.
  2. Configure OBS for that event. In OBS, open Settings and configure the stream service and stream key using the details shown for the YouTube event. Do not share or display the key.
  3. Add the VOD as a media source. Add a Media Source in the OBS scene you will use and select the authorized video file. Check playback in the OBS preview. Configure looping only if you want the video to repeat; a single playthrough is different from a continuous rerun.
  4. Check the outgoing picture and sound. Confirm the intended scene is selected, the video is visible, and audio is reaching the OBS meters. Make sure no unrelated desktop, alerts, or private information will be captured.
  5. Start at the scheduled time. Start streaming in OBS for the scheduled event. If you enabled YouTube auto-start, verify that the event actually begins; do not assume a setting alone confirms that the stream is live.
  6. Monitor the broadcast. Check Live Control Room for the incoming stream and status, and keep OBS and the network connection available for the duration. Stop the encoder when the rerun is finished and verify the event’s end state in YouTube Studio.

YouTube does not set one bitrate or resolution that is right for every source and connection in the material available for this guide. Use the encoder guidance shown for your event and choose settings your upload connection can sustain. Avoid changing quality settings without checking the resulting stream in the Live Control Room.

What to expect from a cloud service

A cloud service runs the prerecorded stream from hosted infrastructure instead of relying on your local OBS computer for the broadcast. YouTube’s verified encoder directory names Gyre in this category. That is a useful example, but it does not establish Gyre’s current features, price, or limits; check those directly with the provider before committing. Regardless of provider, confirm that the service supports the video’s quality and duration, the scheduling you need, and the YouTube connection workflow.

Viewer rewind, archives, and monetization

DVR and long streams

YouTube DVR can let viewers pause and rewind while a stream is live. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Check the DVR setting on the event and do not promise live rewind for a long broadcast. An archived recording may remain available after the event even if DVR is disabled, depending on YouTube processing and your settings.

Reused footage and channel monetization

YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 clarification renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and explains that repetitive or mass-produced content without materially varied creative, educational, or other viewer value can be ineligible. This does not establish that every VOD rerun is automatically ineligible, and a stream method cannot guarantee monetization. Consider whether the broadcast adds genuine value for viewers and assess it against the channel’s circumstances and YouTube’s current policy.

Troubleshoot a VOD rerun

  • The event does not go live: Confirm OBS is streaming to the selected scheduled event, the key matches that event, and live streaming is enabled on the channel. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check the event in Live Control Room rather than relying only on OBS.
  • YouTube is not receiving the encoder feed: Check the stream key for transcription errors. If the key may have been exposed or is no longer valid, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and replace it in OBS.
  • The video plays but has no sound: Check the media source’s audio routing and OBS audio meters, then inspect the incoming stream in Live Control Room before relying on the scheduled broadcast.
  • The stream stops when you leave: In the OBS workflow, the computer and its network connection must remain available. For an unattended broadcast without a local streaming PC, consider a cloud service and verify its operating limits.
  • Viewers cannot rewind: Check the event’s DVR setting. DVR can be limited or unavailable when a live stream exceeds 12 hours.
  • A VOD contains music or footage you cannot clear: Do not assume that having the recording or a game copy grants rebroadcast or monetization rights. Remove or replace material as needed, or obtain the necessary permissions before streaming.
