The best podcast topic is one you care about enough to keep exploring, framed for a clear listener and a repeatable supply of episodes. It does not need to be completely original: a distinctive point of view, audience, or format can make a familiar subject feel specific and useful.
How to choose a podcast topic that can last
Start with the overlap between what you want to talk about, what you know or can learn, and what a particular listener would want from the show. A subject is only the starting point. Your angle explains why this version of the subject is worth listening to.

- Write down why you want to make the show. Note the experience, curiosity, or perspective you bring. Spotify for Creators recommends identifying what makes your perspective distinctive; host Casey Adams suggests writing it down. Spotify for Creators’ idea guide includes this advice.
- Name the subject in a few words. Keep this broad enough to leave room for episodes: for example, cooking, local history, or career changes.
- Specify the listener and the promise. Complete a sentence such as: “This show helps [a particular listener] understand, enjoy, or do [something] through [my angle].”
- Test whether the premise can generate episodes. List possible questions, stories, lessons, debates, interviews, or reviews. Look for a subject with room for many episodes or more than one season, rather than relying on one timely idea.
- Choose a format that fits your idea supply and capacity. Decide how each episode will reliably take shape before committing to a demanding schedule or production style.
Spotify’s August 26, 2026 creator guide says you should have enough ideas to begin comfortably, but you do not need a complete season mapped out before launch. It does not set a universal number of ideas.
Should you pick a broad or niche podcast topic?
Use a broad subject as the territory and a niche or angle to make the show legible to its intended listener. A niche is not necessarily a tiny subject; it can be a specific audience, problem, life situation, point of view, or way of treating a broad subject.

| Planning choice | What it answers | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Broad topic | What is the show generally about? | Gardening |
| Audience and angle | Who is it for, and what makes this approach relevant to them? | Practical gardening for renters with little outdoor space |
| Episode idea | What is one specific installment about? | Which herbs can thrive on a shaded apartment balcony? |
A topic that is too broad can make it hard for a prospective listener to tell whether the show is for them. A premise that is too narrow may make it harder to find fresh episodes. Test both audience clarity and idea supply: can a listener describe the show, and can you see several meaningful ways to continue it? Spotify for Creators’ audience guidance and starting guide discuss the relationship between audience, topic, niche, and format.
How do I know if my podcast idea is original enough?
It does not have to be a subject no one has covered. Familiar fields can support a distinctive show when the host brings a particular voice, experience, audience, or treatment. Ask what you notice that another show might overlook, which listener you understand especially well, or what recurring question you want to answer in your own way.

Then make the difference concrete in the show’s premise. “A podcast about personal finance” describes a subject; “plain-language money decisions for people starting over after a career change” gives a listener a clearer reason to consider it. Treat originality as a question of perspective and fit, not a demand to invent a whole new category. Spotify for Creators has also collected creator advice on finding a distinctive approach in its topic and creator advice article.

- Questions people already ask: Notice recurring questions in communities, comments, conversations, search autocomplete, and “People Also Ask.” Check that a question fits your intended listener before turning it into an episode.
- Your own notes: Keep a journal for observations, questions, experiences, and half-formed ideas. Revisit it when planning.
- Audience input: Invite questions or stories through comments and polls. These can reveal what listeners want addressed, but they need not determine every episode.
- Teaching and explaining: Break a skill or subject into lessons, common mistakes, myths, or decisions people need to make.
- Interviews and personal stories: Look for people whose experience can illuminate the show’s subject. An interview format requires a continuing guest pipeline, so consider whether you can identify likely guests regularly.
- Reviews, recaps, and retrospectives: Discuss media, products, events, or developments through a consistent lens. A fixed premise can provide structure without relying on audience submissions.
- Trends and current-interest angles: Use timely subjects when they serve the show, while keeping the underlying premise recognizable.
Spotify Support’s content ideas for your show also suggests prompts such as journaling, trivia, teaching, interviews, and reviews. AI can help generate brainstorming prompts, but a generated list is not evidence that listeners want those episodes; validate ideas against real questions and conversations.
Choose a format that fits the idea engine
Format is the repeatable shape of an episode. Choose one that gives listeners a useful expectation and matches the work you can sustain. These formats are options, not rankings.

| Format | Idea supply depends on | Best fit to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Solo | Your own research, experience, lessons, or commentary | A host with a steady supply of material and time to prepare |
| Interview | A continuing pipeline of guests and their stories | A subject with people whose experiences or expertise add something distinct |
| Listener questions or stories | Audience contributions | A show with a way to invite and select useful submissions; plan alternatives for quieter periods |
| Reviews, games, recaps, or retrospectives | A fixed editorial premise and a continuing set of things to discuss | A host who prefers a repeatable structure that does not depend on submissions |
Set expectations clearly, but do not let a format prevent a better episode. A recognizable show can adapt its treatment as you learn what listeners respond to. Digital.gov’s introduction to podcasts likewise emphasizes a theme listeners can understand while allowing flexibility.

Have enough strong ideas to begin comfortably, not a fixed quota. Spotify for Creators’ August 2026 guide recommends having ideas for your first several episodes but says a complete season plan is not necessary. The right amount depends on your publishing pace, format, preparation time, and how quickly you can replenish the list.

Before launch, check that your initial ideas are varied enough to demonstrate the premise and that you know where the next ones will come from. An interview show should have plausible guests; a solo show should have host-led material; a listener-led show should have a backup source for episodes.
What to do if you run out of podcast episode ideas
A dry spell does not automatically mean the topic is exhausted. Reopen the idea sources: look for repeated questions, review community discussions, ask listeners through a poll, revisit your journal, or teach a smaller part of a larger subject. Try a different format—such as a lesson, interview, review, or retrospective—if it brings out a useful angle.
After publishing, use comments, polls, and available analytics to see what prompted interest, then ask likely listeners what they want to understand next. Treat those signals as input rather than a mandate: audience response can help refine how you cover a subject without requiring you to abandon the show’s recognizable premise. Spotify for Creators’ idea guide and creator advice discuss developing and adapting podcast topics.
Or let it run in the cloud
