If you bought a Steam game because you thought it had already launched, request a refund through Steam Help while signed in to the account that made the purchase. Explain the misunderstanding plainly. Steam’s usual rule for games is that the request must be made within 14 days of purchase and the game must have less than two hours of playtime, but Steam says it may review requests outside those limits.
How to submit the refund request
- Go to Steam Help and sign in to the account used to buy the game.
- Select Purchases.
- Choose the game purchase. If it is not listed, Steam says it falls outside the refund window for this route.
- Select the problem you are having with the product, then choose “I’d like to request a refund.”
- Complete and submit the form. In the explanation, say that you bought the game because you believed it had launched and ask for a refund. Be accurate; Steam reviews the request and approval is not guaranteed.
- If the form offers a choice, select Steam Wallet or the original payment method as the refund destination.
Steam Support says you should receive an email confirming submission, followed by another email when the request has been processed. See Steam’s refund request instructions.

Which refund rule applies?
Steam’s standard policy for games and software is that you can request a refund within 14 days of purchase if you have played for less than two hours. Steam also says it may review a request that does not meet those conditions. Buying by mistake is one of the reasons it explicitly says you may give for requesting a refund. These are policy terms, not a guarantee of approval; the policy page was last updated April 23, 2024.

| What you bought | How the timing works |
|---|---|
| A game you could not play before its stated release date | You can request a refund any time before release. The standard 14-day and less-than-two-hours period begins on the release date. |
| An Early Access or Advanced Access game | Playtime before full release counts toward the two-hour limit. |
| A game outside the standard limits | You can still submit a request for Steam to review, but approval is not assured. |
These distinctions matter if you bought a title that appeared available before its full launch. Check whether it was a non-playable pre-purchase or an Early Access/Advanced Access release, then consider both the purchase or release date and your playtime. Steam’s current terms are on its refund policy page.

What happens if the refund is approved?
Steam says an approved refund is issued within a week, either to your Steam Wallet or to the original payment method. Some payment methods cannot receive a return to the original method, so the available destination may vary. The week is Steam’s stated processing period after approval, not a promise that every request will be decided or paid within that time.
