Start with the store or seller that took your payment and submit a formal refund request through its support process. A shutdown alone does not guarantee a refund: explain exactly what stopped working, when it stopped, and how that compares with what the game was described as providing. Store rules differ, and consumer rights may add remedies depending on your country and the facts.
Work out who should receive the request
Use the account and transaction history for the place where you actually bought the game. If you bought a code from a retailer, that retailer may need to handle the refund rather than the console or PC storefront where you redeemed it. For an in-app purchase, identify whether the payment went through Google Play or another seller.

Before contacting support, assess the claim against these points:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- What was lost? Distinguish a game that cannot be launched from one whose multiplayer, online-only mode, purchased currency, or other paid feature no longer works. Be precise if offline portions remain playable.
- What was promised? A store listing, publisher statement, or contract term describing online features or service duration may help explain why the shutdown matters.
- When did it happen? Record the purchase date and shutdown date. Store refund windows may be short, while a possible claim based on nonconforming digital content may involve a different legal analysis.
- What use does the store consider? Downloading, streaming, playtime, or consuming an in-game item can affect eligibility under some store rules.
- Where do you live? The store policy and legal remedies may vary by country. Do not assume a policy published for one market applies elsewhere.
Submit a request through the store
The procedures and policies below reflect official platform information reviewed on October 4, 2026. PlayStation and Nintendo details are specifically for the United States; check the current rules for your own market.
#1 Best Overall
- Redeemable at US GameStop, EB Games, Babbage's, Electronic Boutique, EBX, Planet X, and Software Etc. stores. Also redeemable online at and GameStop.com and EBGames.com.
- Over 6,100 stores located throughout the United States.
- GameStop. Power to the Players.
- Redemption: Instore and Online
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
Steam
- Sign in to Steam Help and open Purchases.
- Select the game, identify the problem, then choose “I’d like to request a refund.”
- Complete the form and choose Steam Wallet or the original payment method if offered.
Valve’s standard published rule covers requests made within 14 days of purchase for titles played for less than two hours. A shutdown request outside those limits is not guaranteed, but Steam explicitly invites requests outside its stated rules for review: “Even if you fall outside of the refund rules we’ve described, you can submit a request and we’ll take a look at it.”
PlayStation Store (United States)
- Open Transaction History and select the transaction.
- Choose Request Refund and follow the on-screen instructions; contact PlayStation Support if needed.
For a game or DLC, the standard US checklist requires a request within 14 days of purchase and that the content has not been downloaded or streamed, unless it is faulty. If the shutdown has made a feature unavailable, describe that specific fault or loss of functionality. PlayStation says local law may provide additional rights; these US policy details should not be applied automatically to other regions.

Nintendo (United States)

Contact Nintendo Support with the transaction details and shutdown information; the policy does not promise a special exception for discontinued games.

Google Play
Google says a refund request for an app, game, or in-app purchase made within 48 hours may be eligible depending on the purchase. After 48 hours, Google directs customers to contact the developer to troubleshoot and ask about a refund under the developer’s policy and applicable law. If the developer has closed or does not respond, keep a record of the contact attempt and return to Google’s refund or help process; that step does not itself guarantee a refund.

Xbox / Microsoft Store

Microsoft says digital goods such as games and add-ons are not refundable unless the offer or applicable law makes the purchase eligible. Online returns are not available in every market, so check the terms for your region and describe the service or feature lost in the shutdown.
Consider consumer-law rights as well as store rules
United Kingdom
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 provides statutory rights for digital content that does not conform to the contract. Depending on the circumstances, the trader may have to repair or replace the content; where that remedy is unavailable or unsuccessful under the statutory scheme, a price reduction may be available and can amount to the full price. A server closure is not automatically a breach. Relevant facts include the contract, how the game was described, the nature and expected duration of its online service, and whether the remaining game still performs as promised. This is general UK information, not individual legal advice.
Rank #4
- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

European Union
A 2026 European Commission communication concerning the Stop Destroying Videogames citizens’ initiative says that ending supply sooner than a consumer may reasonably expect can constitute a lack of conformity. It says consumers in that situation should notify the provider of contract termination and request a refund. The assessment depends on the content or service, what was agreed or reasonably expected, and applicable national implementation; it is not a guaranteed EU-wide refund for every shutdown. The communication also addresses ancillary in-game purchases terminated with the main service.

Prepare a clear, documented request
Save the receipt or order number, the game’s store listing, the publisher’s shutdown announcement, relevant terms, screenshots of error messages, and written responses from support. Include only statements and evidence that actually apply to your purchase. Describe whether the entire game is inaccessible or identify the specific mode, feature, or purchased content that no longer works.
Copy-and-adapt request
Subject: Refund request for [game/title] following shutdown of [service]
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.I purchased [game/content] on [date] through [store/platform], order number [number]. The publisher announced that [online service/game] would shut down on [date]. Since then, [specific function] no longer works. [Explain whether the game is wholly unplayable or which paid feature/content is unavailable.] The product was described as [relevant exact listing or promise, if applicable]. Please review my refund request under your refund policy and any consumer rights that apply in [country]. I have attached proof of purchase and the shutdown notice. If you deny the request, please explain the applicable policy and the basis for treating the lost functionality as consistent with the purchase terms.
If the request is denied
Ask the seller to review the decision and identify the policy or contract term it relied on. If you are relying on a statutory right, name the specific right that applies in your location and explain how the shutdown conflicts with the purchase terms or reasonable expectation. Keep the case number and response. For a significant dispute, consider contacting a consumer-advice service in your country.
