To turn a video on your channel into Shorts or clips, open it in YouTube Studio and select Clips and Shorts. Choose a passage from the transcript or timeline; if YouTube’s AI suggestions and transcript outline are available, use them to shortlist moments, then review and adjust the cut yourself. You can also make a Short from your own eligible public video in the YouTube mobile app.
How to repurpose YouTube videos into clips with AI in Studio
- Open the source upload. Sign in to YouTube Studio, select Content, and open the video you want to reuse. Start with a video uploaded to your own channel.
- Open the clip workflow. Choose Clips and Shorts, then choose to create a Short or video clip. The available options may depend on the video and your account.
- Select a candidate moment. Highlight words in the transcript or set the start and end points on the timeline. If AI suggestions or a transcript outline are shown, use them to navigate possible moments—not as a guarantee that a suggested passage is the strongest editorial choice. YouTube’s tool uses the transcript to generate captions for Shorts. YouTube’s Studio instructions describe the workflow and its options.
- Check the footage and boundaries. Play the selection from just before the opening through the final beat. Adjust the cut so it includes the setup and payoff, and does not begin or end mid-sentence or mid-action.
- Preview the crop and captions. Check that the important subject remains visible in a vertical frame. Review auto-generated captions for names, technical vocabulary, punctuation, and timing; edit their appearance or position, or turn them off if they do not help.
- Create a draft and publish when ready. Give the Short a specific title and add a description that points viewers to the full video where appropriate. YouTube says Shorts created with this Studio workflow are automatically related to the source video unless the Short is private, unlisted, or Made for Kids. Its instructions also recommend adding the source-video link in the description.
How do I turn a long YouTube video into Shorts?
Choose a moment that works on its own
Look for one complete idea, demonstration, reaction, or story beat—not simply a stretch that happens to fit a time limit. YouTube’s creator guidance suggests looking for hooks, exciting or informative segments, actionable tutorial steps, and visually appealing moments. A useful test: could someone understand why this moment matters without watching the preceding ten minutes?

Adapt it for vertical viewing
For a Short, use a 9:16 crop where the source footage allows it. Keep the speaker, product, or action in frame as the crop changes, and use captions or concise on-screen text when they clarify the point. Tighten pauses that do not add meaning, but leave enough context for the clip to make sense. YouTube’s guidance recommends retaining a consistent visual identity where useful; its advice is editorial guidance, not a promise of reach. YouTube’s guidance on moving long-form content to Shorts includes the line, “Shorts can be a great way to preview your longer videos.”
Use a clear title and a relevant next step
Describe the moment rather than using a vague label such as “Part 1.” If the clip is a preview, tell viewers where to find the full video. Studio-created Shorts can be associated with their source video under the visibility and audience exceptions described above; for other workflows, add the source link yourself when relevant.

Can AI automatically find clips in my YouTube video?
YouTube Studio may offer AI-powered suggestions and an outline generated from the transcript in Clips and Shorts. These features can help you find candidate passages, but YouTube’s documentation does not promise that AI will identify the best-performing moment or choose a final cut for you. Watch each proposed segment, confirm it has enough context, and adjust the boundaries before creating it.
The AI suggestions and transcript outline are stated as available in Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States, in English, French, German, Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Availability can change. If the AI options do not appear, transcript highlighting or timeline timestamps remain documented selection methods. Check YouTube’s current feature instructions for availability and steps.

Mobile instructions for Edit into a Short apply to the creator’s own public long-form video: in the YouTube app, open the video and choose Remix → Edit into a Short. Select up to 60 seconds, make any text or filter changes, then continue to upload. YouTube’s instructions exclude private and unlisted videos and videos with third-party claims. - Transcript quality: Can you correct recognition errors and select a passage by text?
- Reframing: Can you keep the speaker or action in frame in a vertical crop, and adjust the crop manually?
- Caption control: Can you correct wording, timing, style, and position?
- Export: Are the aspect ratio, resolution, file format, and watermark acceptable for your use?
- Privacy and rights: Understand how the service handles uploaded video and transcripts, and confirm you have permission to upload and reuse the material.
- Cost and limits: Check current pricing, export limits, and any usage restrictions directly with the provider.
Do not assume that an AI-generated cut is cleared for use or that uploading a video grants rights to its music or other material.
Copyright, remixing, and source-video eligibility
Editing your own upload is different from remixing another creator’s work. The mobile Edit into a Short route described above is for an eligible public video uploaded by you. Remixing someone else’s video depends on the creator’s settings, privacy, copyright ownership, and music licenses. YouTube warns that protected material used in Shorts made outside its creation tools may receive a Content ID claim or be removed after a valid copyright takedown. Review the permissions and music rights that apply before publishing. YouTube’s remix guidance explains restrictions for remixed content.

How to tell whether your clips are working
Review performance in YouTube Analytics and compare different kinds of moments, openings, and edits. YouTube recommends tracking performance and engagement, but no particular increase in views or traffic is guaranteed. Use what viewers respond to to inform later selections rather than assuming one AI suggestion or editing style will work for every video.
