Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf FFmpeg cannot connect to YouTube Live, first copy the current stream URL from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and make sure the protocol matches it. For an RTMPS stream, use the RTMPS URL—not an RTMP URL with only the protocol changed. Then troubleshoot the specific symptom: check the endpoint and port for SSL errors, verify FFmpeg supports RTMPS for timeouts, refresh the stream key for startup failures, and use YouTube’s stream-health messages to diagnose errors that occur after connection.
Start with the exact error and the current YouTube endpoint
Connection failures and media-ingest warnings are different problems. A timeout or SSL certificate complaint occurs while FFmpeg is trying to reach the ingest server. If FFmpeg connects but YouTube reports a stream-health error, investigate the video, audio, bitrate, or keyframe settings instead.

- Open the stream setup in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select the stream key and protocol you intend to use. Copy the stream URL shown there; do not rely on an endpoint saved from an older setup.
- If you intend to use RTMPS, reveal and copy YouTube’s RTMPS URL using the lock control. Confirm that the URL begins with
rtmps://and that the server name is the matching RTMPS server. YouTube Help states: “Both the protocol and the server should be rtmps, not just rtmp.” YouTube’s RTMPS instructions explain the endpoint selection. - Paste the copied URL into the FFmpeg output configuration without substituting a guessed host or changing the server name. Keep the stream key private; do not include it in screenshots, public logs, or support posts.
Fix an SSL certificate error
An SSL complaint points first to the secure endpoint configuration, not to bitrate or keyframe settings. Re-copy the RTMPS URL from the current Live Control Room setup and check that both its protocol and server are RTMPS. If the URL appears correct but FFmpeg still reports an invalid SSL certificate, YouTube suggests using port 443: add :443 to the URL or configure port 443 separately, following the URL format YouTube supplied for that stream. Do not replace the endpoint with a generic host assembled from memory. See YouTube Help’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance.
Fix a connection timeout
A timeout can mean FFmpeg cannot reach the chosen endpoint, or that the encoder configuration does not support the selected protocol. YouTube says a persistent “failed to connect to server — connection timed out” error may indicate that the encoder does not support RTMPS.

- Check the FFmpeg build and its supported protocols and features. Confirm that the specific executable and build you are running can use RTMPS; support can depend on how FFmpeg was built.
- If your build does not support RTMPS, use a suitable FFmpeg build or another encoder configuration that supports the protocol selected in Live Control Room. Alternatively, select an available protocol supported by both ends, while keeping YouTube’s recommendation to use RTMPS in mind.
- Check that the outbound network can reach the selected server and that a firewall or network policy is not blocking the connection. If possible, test on a reliable wired connection; an Ethernet cable is only a way to test network reliability, not a guaranteed fix.
YouTube’s guidance does not specify universal FFmpeg command-line flags for enabling RTMPS. Check the documentation and protocol support for the FFmpeg version and build you actually use rather than copying a command intended for a different build. See YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting page.
Replace the stream key if FFmpeg cannot start the stream
If the endpoint and protocol are correct but a third-party encoder reports a startup error, copy a fresh stream key from the Live Control Room and replace the one in your FFmpeg configuration. Make sure the key belongs to the selected stream setup. Treat it like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.

After replacing it, try connecting again and check the Live Control Room preview. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance for encoder startup errors recommends copying a new stream key into the encoder.
If FFmpeg connects, troubleshoot stream health and encoding settings
A successful server connection does not guarantee YouTube can process the media. Read the exact Live Control Room health message and adjust the setting it identifies. YouTube’s error guidance covers unsupported formats or codecs, bitrate, video stream configuration, and keyframe frequency. Some ingestion configurations require the stream’s bitrate to match the value selected in the ingestion settings. See YouTube’s live encoder error messages.

Check the output profile
YouTube’s current encoder recommendations support RTMP or RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; up to 60 frames per second; and constant bitrate (CBR). Choose settings compatible with both your FFmpeg build and the selected YouTube stream configuration.
| H.264 output | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube Help recommendations; the retrieved pages do not state a publication year. They are not universal FFmpeg defaults. For other resolutions, frame rates, or codecs, consult YouTube’s encoder settings recommendations and the stream’s selected ingestion settings. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds.

Check available upload capacity
Compare the combined bitrate of the primary and any backup stream with the upload capacity actually available to the encoder. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom. Shared connections can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream, and connectivity interruptions can still break it. If capacity is short, reduce resolution or bitrate to a profile YouTube supports, then test again. The YouTube encoder settings and network guidance covers recommended encoding settings and bandwidth headroom.
Use HLS only when your workflow calls for it
HLS is not a general workaround for every failed RTMPS connection. YouTube documents HLS for HDR workflows or codecs that RTMP does not support, and only when the encoder supports YouTube’s HLS requirements. HLS uses an HTTPS ingestion URL and specified segment durations and formats; because it sends video in segments rather than as a continuous RTMP stream, it has higher latency. Check YouTube’s HLS ingestion requirements before changing protocols.

Test the complete setup before going live
- Start FFmpeg in advance of the event using the intended endpoint, key, and output profile.
- Open the Live Control Room preview and confirm that video and audio appear.
- Check stream health for warnings, including bitrate, codec, video configuration, or keyframe issues.
- Test with a similar stream before the event, and monitor the connection and preview rather than assuming a successful startup will remain healthy.
YouTube recommends testing beforehand, starting the encoder in advance, checking the preview, and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s setup guidance.
