You can repurpose a YouTube livestream by trimming its archive, publishing a highlight, or creating a separate clip or Short. Those are different workflows: trimming edits the existing video, while highlights and clips create separate videos. First, make sure you have a copy of the recording you want to preserve.
1. Protect the livestream recording
YouTube Help says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. If you streamed with an encoder, check that the local recording is intact and that the file is growing while the stream is running. An external SSD or hard drive is an optional place to keep a local backup; YouTube does not require a particular storage device. In YouTube Studio, open the content area and find your live archive. From there, you can adjust its visibility or delete it. Before editing an archive, download a copy or use Google Takeout if you may need the unedited version later.

2. Mark moments worth revisiting
For future broadcasts, add stream markers when something useful, memorable, or especially clear happens. Markers appear on the highlight timeline, making it easier to locate a segment afterward. A solo creator can add markers during the broadcast and build a highlight later; a team member can also create a highlight while the stream is live. YouTube Help: Create a highlight

3. Pick the right repurposing workflow
| Workflow | Use it for | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Trim or cut the archive | Removing an opening wait, dead air, or a problem segment from the main recording | Edits the existing video. YouTube documents this for videos shorter than six hours; the URL, views, and comments remain the same. As of June 2025, saved changes cannot be undone with “Revert to original.” |
| Create a highlight | Publishing a shorter moment from the livestream as its own video | Select the segment with timeline handles or timestamps, then add its title, description, and visibility. YouTube says the resulting highlight is published automatically. |
| Use Clips and Shorts | Creating a separate derivative from a long-form video | Select a segment using transcript text or timestamps, preview it, and create a draft for upload. AI suggestions and outlines vary by country and language. |
| Create a mobile live Short highlight | Making a Short from an eligible vertical livestream | Has additional source-stream requirements, and the saved Short highlight is private by default. |

4. Trim the original archive in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio on a computer and go to Content. Select the livestream archive you want to edit.
- Open the video’s editor and choose the trim or cut option. The documented Studio workflow applies to videos shorter than six hours.
- Drag the handles to remove the beginning or end, or add a cut to remove a section in the middle. Preview the result carefully before saving.
- Save the edit only when you are satisfied. The edited video keeps its URL, views, and comments, but as of June 2025 you cannot use “Revert to original” to undo saved changes.
If a copyright claim affects the archive, YouTube lists trimming the claimed segment, replacing claimed music with Audio Library music, or muting claimed audio as possible actions. Preserve a separate copy before editing if retaining the original matters. YouTube Help: Trim your videos YouTube Help: Remove claimed content from videos

5. Create a separate highlight

- Select the section using the timeline handles or enter start and end timestamps. Use any stream markers to jump to moments you noted.
- Preview the selected segment and adjust mute if needed.
- Add a title and description, choose the visibility setting, and create the highlight. YouTube says the resulting video is published automatically.

6. Make a clip or Short from a long-form video
For a separate derivative, use YouTube’s Clips and Shorts workflow rather than trimming the archive. Choose the portion using transcript text or timestamps, preview the result, then create a draft for upload. AI-powered suggestions and outlines are not available everywhere; YouTube’s help documentation says availability depends on country and language. YouTube Help: Create and manage Clips

Check eligibility for a mobile live Short highlight
YouTube’s mobile live Short highlight path has specific conditions. The source stream must be 10 minutes to 12 hours long, vertical, streamed in the YouTube mobile app, have chat enabled, not be marked Made for Kids, and meet YouTube’s safety standards. The saved Short highlight is private by default, so change its visibility if you intend to make it public. These rules describe this mobile live highlight path, not every way to create a Short from existing video. YouTube Help: Create a Short from your live stream YouTube Help: Promote your live stream
