YouTube Studio can create clips and Shorts from an existing long-form video; chapters, captions, playlists, and links help viewers navigate between the short version and the full session.
1. Check the recording before you publish
Confirm that you have the right to publish the event footage and its contents. Review music, presentation slides, embedded videos, logos, and any other third-party material, as well as audience footage where relevant. YouTube scans uploaded videos against material submitted by copyright owners; a match can result in a Content ID claim or a removal request. An upload check is useful, but it does not guarantee that a video is free of rights issues. Fair use depends on the facts and applicable local law; it is not blanket permission. If the recording was a livestream, rights checks do not necessarily end when the broadcast does: archived live streams can receive Content ID claims afterward. YouTube also says licensed third-party material may require the rights holder to add the channel to its allowlist to avoid interruption during a live stream. Consult Copyright issues with live streams before relying on licensed material in a broadcast.
2. Choose the right version for each viewer
Do not assume every session needs to be cut into a Short, or that the full recording is the only version worth publishing. Match the format to what a viewer needs from that particular segment.

For each candidate excerpt, check whether it depends on an earlier introduction, an audience question, or material shown on screen. Keep the necessary context, or choose a different moment. These are editorial choices, not YouTube requirements.
3. Create a clip or Short from the recording
YouTube Studio’s Clips and Shorts workflow can make a separate clip or Short from a long-form video. Depending on availability for the account and video, you can select transcript text or timestamps; AI suggestions and transcript outlines may also be offered. The workflow uses the transcript to generate captions for a Short and may automatically attach the source as a related video. YouTube’s guide, Video Clips & Shorts in YouTube Studio, describes the current options.
- Open YouTube Studio and choose the existing long-form event video you want to work from.
- Open the Clips and Shorts creation option for that video. If the tool offers transcript selection, choose the words that form a complete excerpt; otherwise select the relevant timestamps.
- Review the proposed start and end carefully. Include the question if the answer needs it, and do not cut off a key qualification, demonstration, or conclusion.
- Review any AI suggestions or transcript outline as suggestions, not as a substitute for checking the actual recording.
- Check the generated captions against the speaker’s words, names, and technical terms. Correct errors before publishing.
- Review the source or related-video connection. If it is not attached automatically, use the available related-video option where eligible so interested viewers can continue to the full event recording.
- Preview the result, then complete the publishing details and visibility choice.
The exact options can vary by feature availability. A Short can link viewers to another video on the channel, including the full event recording, when the channel has the required feature access to add that link.
4. Package the upload so viewers can use it
In YouTube Studio’s upload details, give each version a title and description that accurately identify the subject and context. Add a thumbnail where the format supports it, and use playlists to group related sessions or excerpts. YouTube Studio also offers captions, language selection, and links to related videos. - Title and description: Make clear which event or session the excerpt comes from and what it covers; do not imply a conclusion the speaker did not reach.
- Captions and language: Review generated captions for accuracy and choose the appropriate language setting.
- Playlist: Group excerpts with the corresponding session or event series when that helps viewers continue watching.
- Related video: Connect a short item to the full session when the feature is available and that is the useful next step.
- Visibility: Choose public, unlisted, private, or scheduled according to the intended audience and release plan.
5. Add chapters to the full session
Chapters make a longer recording easier to scan when viewers want a particular topic or speaker. You can add manual timestamps or allow automatic chapters when the video is eligible. For manual chapters, the first timestamp must be 00:00; provide at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. See YouTube’s Video Chapters guidance.
Use chapter labels that describe the section plainly. Check the timestamps against the finished upload so chapter boundaries match the actual video, especially if you edited the recording after drafting the list.
6. Check the upload and select its release setting
Review YouTube’s upload checks, then choose the visibility setting that fits your audience and timing: public, unlisted, private, or scheduled. A check can flag potential copyright issues, but YouTube notes that results are not final; a check is not a substitute for confirming your rights to the material. If a concern appears, resolve it before promoting or scheduling the video.

7. Troubleshoot common repurposing problems
The excerpt is confusing without the full talk
Include the question or explanation the audience needs, or choose a more self-contained moment. If the topic needs a longer setup, publish it as a focused edited video rather than forcing it into a very short format.

Captions misstate a name or key phrase
Review the generated captions against the audio before publishing and correct errors, especially names, acronyms, and technical terms. Transcript-based selection can help locate a passage, but the transcript still needs review.
Viewers cannot find the complete session
Check whether the clip or Short has a source or related-video connection. Add the full event video through the available related-video option when the channel has access to that feature; also make the relationship clear in the description or playlist.
A copyright concern appears in the upload checks
Identify the material involved and confirm the relevant permission or other legal basis before release. Upload-check results are not conclusive, and fair use is fact-specific rather than automatic. For archived livestreams, remember that a Content ID claim may arrive after the stream has ended.

A chapter list does not appear as intended
Verify that the manual list begins at 00:00, has at least three ascending timestamps, and gives each chapter a duration of at least 10 seconds. Then compare timestamps with the uploaded version, not an earlier edit.
