If cryptocurrency was stolen, report it promptly to your local police and, for a U.S.-connected cyber-enabled crime, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). Save transaction details and original records as you gather them; don’t delay a report because you’re missing a transaction hash or other information. Filing a complaint does not guarantee an investigation or recovery.
What to do first
- If the matter is urgent, contact local police directly. IC3 advises contacting local law enforcement when a matter is time-sensitive. If you are outside the United States, use the appropriate local police or cybercrime reporting channel as well.
- Report promptly with the information you have. The FBI recommends submitting a complaint to IC3 or contacting a local FBI field office and says, “Do not wait.” IC3 says anyone who believes they are affected by a cyber-enabled crime may file, including people outside the United States. Its guidance focuses in part on scams, but you can describe unauthorized account access or another non-scam theft in a complaint too.
- Secure accounts you can still access. Contact the relevant exchange or service through its official support channel about unauthorized access or transfers. Preserve records of your contact and any case number. Do not share passwords, private keys, or one-time codes with someone claiming to investigate or recover your funds.

What information to include in a report
Transaction details
For each transfer, record the cryptocurrency type, amount, date and time, sending and receiving addresses, and transaction ID or hash. Note the exchange, wallet service, or other platform used to send or receive funds. Include transaction information even if you are unsure it matters.
If you do not have a transaction hash or other transaction data, report anyway and provide what you know. The FBI specifically says to submit a report with the information available.

A chronological account
Write down when and how the incident began, what happened next, when each transfer took place, and how you discovered the loss. Include relevant names, usernames, email addresses, phone numbers, websites, domains, apps, and details of any one-time passcodes or two-factor authentication involved. Distinguish what you observed from what you suspect.
Accounts and services involved
Identify affected exchanges, wallet providers, email accounts, devices, and other services. Include account identifiers or support case numbers when relevant, but do not put passwords, private keys, or recovery phrases in a complaint narrative.

Preserve original evidence
Keep original records securely and do not alter or discard them. IC3’s complaint form does not accept evidence attachments; if an agency investigates, it may request records directly. Retain items such as:
- Exchange statements, wallet activity records, receipts, and transaction notifications.
- Emails in their original form, including full headers where available; text messages, chats, and relevant call or telephony records.
- Copies or captures of relevant webpages, profiles, advertisements, and messages, with the dates and URLs recorded.
- Relevant technical records already available, such as account security notifications or login alerts.
- Your written timeline and notes about when and how you obtained each record.
Use the official IC3 Complaint Form to submit the complaint. Its FAQ explains that supporting evidence should be retained rather than attached to the form.

Keep your IC3 complaint record
Before closing the submission page, save or print the complaint for your records. IC3 says it will not email you a copy. If you later obtain new information, submit a new complaint and identify it as an update to your earlier filing.
What reporting can—and cannot—do
IC3 reviews complaints and may refer information to law enforcement partners. It does not conduct investigations, and the agency receiving a referral decides whether to investigate or prosecute. A report is useful documentation, not a promise of follow-up, reimbursement, or recovery.

Cryptocurrency transactions are permanently recorded on public blockchains, and law enforcement can trace transactions. That record may help investigators follow the movement of funds, but tracing does not reverse a transfer. Transfers across borders can also complicate law enforcement efforts. The FBI’s cryptocurrency guidance explains these limits.

People who have already lost funds may be targeted again by unsolicited recovery offers. Be skeptical of anyone promising guaranteed recovery, demanding an upfront fee, or asking for personal or financial information. The FBI warns that private recovery firms cannot issue seizure orders and that law enforcement does not charge victims an investigation fee. Do not send more cryptocurrency to an unknown claimant.
