Report only when you can do so safely and as close to the incident as practical. A persistent wrong turn, address, route or missing road is a map correction, not a temporary traffic report.
The exact buttons and categories depend on your phone, vehicle interface and country. The official instructions for Google Maps on Android, Google Maps on CarPlay, and Waze crash reports are the safest references when your screen differs.

Decide what you are reporting before touching the screen
There are two different jobs that are often confused:
- A traffic incident report describes a temporary condition that other drivers may encounter now: a crash, queue, obstruction, construction activity, flooded road or closure.
- A map correction fixes information that is wrong or missing over time, such as an incorrect turn restriction, address, route, roundabout or road.
Use the incident workflow while you are near the event. Use Waze’s map-issue workflow for a lasting map discrepancy, either during the drive or afterward. A map correction normally requires review, so it is not a substitute for warning drivers about a crash that is occurring now.

Make safety the first condition
Do not type, browse menus or hold a phone while driving. Pull over, let a passenger make the report, or use a lawful hands-free control. Google states: "Only make a report if it’s safe to do so." A report made later is preferable to distracted driving. Waze likewise asks users to report incidents seen in real time and as close to the actual incident as possible; do not circle back or stop in a dangerous location merely to improve accuracy.
How to report a traffic problem in Google Maps
Android phone while navigation is running
- Open Google Maps and start turn-by-turn navigation to a destination.
- On the navigation screen, tap Report on the right side.
- Choose the incident category that matches what you see. Google’s Android help gives Crash and Traffic jam as examples.
- Confirm the selection only when it is safe. Maps can place the report along the route for other users.
The Android help page does not promise the same menu everywhere. Google says some report types are available only in certain countries, so a missing category can be a regional limitation rather than a fault with your account.
CarPlay while navigating
- Connect the iPhone to a vehicle running Apple CarPlay and open Google Maps navigation.
- Use the on-screen Report control.
- Select the incident type shown for your location and confirm it when safe.
Google’s CarPlay instructions also describe reporting when you are not actively following a route. The available control and categories can differ from the Android phone screen, so do not assume that a list seen on one platform is universal.
Incident categories you may see
Google’s CarPlay documentation lists examples that include crash, traffic jam, construction, lane closure, object on road, flooded road, low visibility and unplowed road. This is an illustration of the CarPlay interface, not a worldwide promise. Country, platform and app updates determine which choices appear. If the exact problem is absent, choose the closest accurate category rather than reporting a different event.
What happens after a Google Maps report
A report may appear to drivers approaching that location. Google says Maps can later show a prompt asking whether the incident is still there; a driver can answer Yes or No. Alert behavior depends on a user’s settings, and Google does not guarantee that every driver will see a report instantly. Community confirmations and the age of an incident affect how useful the alert remains.
How to report an incident in Waze
Waze separates ordinary incident reports from road-closure reports and from map corrections. Its crash instructions cover the Waze phone app and provide corresponding guidance for Android Auto, Android Automotive and CarPlay. Menu names can move as the vehicle interface is updated, but the basic sequence is the same.
Report a crash, including a pile-up
- Open Waze while the map is visible and tap Report.
- Tap Crash.
- If Waze offers a more specific choice, select Pile-up or Other side when that accurately describes the event. The other-side option is useful when the crash is on the opposite carriageway and does not block your lane.
- Tap Report, or leave the report control active for the few seconds Waze allows for automatic submission.
Waze’s instruction is to report only incidents you see in real time and to report as close to the actual incident as possible. Do not report a crash based only on an old message, a social-media post or a guess about what caused a queue.

Report a road closure
- Tap Report in Waze.
- Expand the report menu if Closure is not immediately visible.
- Select Closure and tap Report.
Waze treats a closure differently from a normal hazard: the closure report immediately affects your route so Waze can avoid that road. Waze says the closure becomes visible on the map after more Wazers report it, and it is removed when Wazers begin driving there again. That behavior means a single report can change your own route before the wider community has confirmed the closure.
Waze’s current help page says closure reporting is supported on its listed mobile and vehicle interfaces but is not currently available on Android Automotive. For a planned closure rather than an unexpected blockage, Waze directs organizers to its closures email process or local community forum; use the current closure-help page for the applicable contact route instead of submitting a live incident.
Use the right Waze interface
The Waze crash-help page documents separate instructions for Android Auto, Android Automotive and CarPlay. A vehicle display may expose fewer controls than the phone app, and a category can be unavailable on one interface. Follow the labels on the active screen and never unlock or handle a phone while the vehicle is moving. If your vehicle interface does not offer the needed report, a passenger can use the phone or you can submit it after stopping safely.
Correct an inaccurate Waze report
When Waze shows an incident that is no longer present, a driver can select Not there. Waze says this decreases how long the inaccurate report remains displayed. This feedback is different from filing a new map correction: it helps remove a stale, temporary alert.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWaze also says a crash report displays the reporting user’s username to other users. Consider that visibility before submitting, and do not include identifying details about other people in any free-text field.
Traffic report or map correction? Use this test
| Situation | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A collision, queue or obstruction visible now | Incident report | It warns nearby drivers about a temporary condition. |
| A road is blocked today by an unexpected closure | Waze Closure | Waze immediately avoids the road for your route and gathers confirmation from other Wazers. |
| A scheduled parade, utility project or planned closure | Waze’s planned-closure contact route | It is not a current observation from a passing driver; follow the process on Waze’s closure-help page. |
| An incorrect turn, address, route, roundabout or missing road | Waze map issue | These are persistent map-data problems that may need editor review. |
How to report a map error in Waze
Submit it during a drive
On Android, Waze documents this path:
- Tap Report.
- Tap Map issue.
- Tap Map Issue and select the problem type.
- Add useful details, then send the report.
Only submit while stopped, with a passenger, or through a permitted hands-free method. Describe what is wrong rather than restating a temporary traffic delay.
Submit it after the drive
- Open Waze and tap Menu.
- Choose Help and feedback.
- Tap Report an issue, then Report a map issue.
- Provide the address or location, select the issue type, add a clear description and submit.
Waze also lists Live Map and local community forums as alternative ways to raise a map problem. Volunteer editors may follow up, and a change can require review before it appears in navigation. That delay is normal for a correction and does not mean a live closure report was sent successfully.

Google Maps and Waze compared for traffic reporting
| Decision point | Google Maps | Waze |
|---|---|---|
| Basic action | During navigation, tap Report and choose an incident category. | Tap Report, then choose a report such as Crash; select Closure for a road that is blocked. |
| Examples documented by the official help | Android: crash and traffic jam. CarPlay: additional examples including construction, lane closure, object on road, flooded road, low visibility and unplowed road. | Crash reporting includes pile-up and other-side choices. Closure is a separate report type. |
| Regional or interface limits | Some report types are available only in certain countries; Android and CarPlay menus differ. | Instructions vary by phone, Android Auto, Android Automotive and CarPlay. Closure reporting is currently unavailable on Android Automotive. |
| Effect after submission | The report may appear along a route; Maps can ask approaching drivers whether it is still present. | A closure immediately affects your route, gains wider map visibility after additional reports and is removed when drivers return. Other reports can be marked Not there. |
| Persistent map errors | The cited navigation instructions cover traffic reports, not a universal map-correction path. | Use Report > Map issue during a drive or the Help and feedback path afterward; editor review may be required. |
| Information shown to others | Google describes route alerts and confirmation prompts; it does not promise instant visibility to everyone. | Waze says a crash report shows the reporting user’s username to other users. |
Choose the app already displayed on your vehicle interface if you need to report without handling a phone. Choose based on the incident type and the controls your country and device actually provide, not on a category list copied from another platform.
Common problems and how to recover
The Report button is missing
- In Google Maps, confirm that navigation is running on the Android phone flow. CarPlay has its own documented report control and can also expose reporting outside active navigation.
- In Waze, open the report menu and expand it if the needed item is hidden.
- On a vehicle display, check whether you are looking at Android Auto, Android Automotive or CarPlay; Waze documents different interface paths.
- If the control still is not available, stop safely and submit after the drive rather than manipulating the phone.
The category you need is not listed
Do not substitute an inaccurate category. Google explicitly limits some report types by country, while Waze can present different choices by interface. Record the event as the closest truthful option only if that option genuinely describes it; otherwise wait until you can use a supported interface or submit the appropriate map issue later.
The incident has moved or is on the opposite side
Report from as close to the actual location as safety permits. In Waze’s crash flow, use Other side when the event is on the opposite carriageway. Do not stop on a shoulder, merge across traffic or turn around solely to place a pin more precisely.
A report is stale or incorrect
In Google Maps, answer No when the app asks whether an incident is still there. In Waze, use Not there on the inaccurate report. These responses help shorten the useful lifetime of a community alert; they do not repair a permanent map-data error.
The road is closed for a planned event
Do not send a live closure report weeks before a project or event. Use Waze’s listed closures email or local community forum process, following the current instructions at Waze road-closure help.
A quick decision checklist for passengers and parked drivers
- Is it happening now? Use an incident report. Is the underlying map wrong? Use Waze’s map-issue path.
- Can you report without distraction? If not, wait, pull over or ask a passenger.
- Which app and interface are active? Check whether you are using Google Maps Android, Google Maps CarPlay, Waze on a phone, Android Auto, Android Automotive or CarPlay.
- Is it a Waze closure? Choose Closure for an unexpected blocked road; remember Android Automotive currently does not support that report.
- Will others need confirmation? Community reports can become stale. Respond to Google Maps prompts and mark an inaccurate Waze alert Not there when appropriate.
Limits you should keep in mind
Neither app guarantees that every driver will see every report, that a category will exist in every country, or that a report will remain accurate as conditions change. Google describes route alerts and follow-up prompts; Waze uses additional community reports and subsequent driving to refine closures. Treat an alert as helpful situational information, not as a replacement for road signs, police directions or your own safe judgment.
Labels, supported interfaces and regional availability can change. If the steps on your screen differ, consult the current official pages: Google Maps Android navigation help, Google Maps CarPlay help, Waze crash help, Waze road-closure help and Waze map-issue help.
