Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo estimate a Pokémon card’s value, identify the exact printing, compare several recent completed sales for the same variant and condition, and treat the result as a range rather than a guaranteed price. A card name alone is not enough: set, collector number, finish, language, condition and grade can all change which sales are valid comparisons.
What determines a Pokémon card’s value?
Value is the price buyers have recently paid for a specific version of a card, not the highest amount a seller happens to request. The useful question is therefore not “What is this Pokémon worth?” but “What have buyers paid recently for this exact card, in this condition, through a comparable transaction?”

Several details must line up before a sale is a reliable comparison:

Step 1: Identify the exact card
Start by transcribing what is printed on the card rather than relying on a photograph or memory. Record the name, collector number, set name or set symbol, language and any visible markings. The collector number is commonly written in a format such as XXX/YYY; enter every digit, including leading zeroes, when searching.
Record the collector number
The number is one of the fastest ways to separate cards with similar artwork or names. It can also reveal that two cards belong to different sets. Older official Pokémon Card-Dex entries, for example, list Snivy as 1/114 and show rarity as a separate field. That historical format illustrates why the number and rarity should be recorded independently; newer sets can use different layouts and symbols.
Write down set and language
Look for the set name, logo or other identifying mark near the card’s edges. If you are unsure of the set, search using the Pokémon name plus the collector number and then verify the resulting image against your physical card. Note the language printed on the card. A matching name and number in a different language is not automatically an equivalent sale.
Check for a promo marking or other visible print detail
Promo cards may carry a PROMO marking, and a promo can have artwork or numbering that resembles a regular expansion card. Record that marking exactly. Also note unusual foil treatment, a different border or an alternate-art presentation. These details are part of the card’s identity, not decoration to ignore during a search.
Step 2: Distinguish the physical variant
Once the identity is narrowed down, inspect the surface under a bright, angled light. The same name and collector number can appear with different finishes. TCGplayer’s rarity guidance notes that a reverse holo changes the card’s appearance but does not change its rarity or collector number. That means a name-and-number search can still return both a regular and a reverse-holo copy, even though they are different physical variants for pricing purposes.
Common finishes to separate
- Standard or non-holo: the normal printed surface without a foil pattern in the artwork or background.
- Holo: a reflective foil treatment, often concentrated in the illustration area or another defined part of the card.
- Reverse holo: a foil treatment applied differently from the regular holo version. Confirm the pattern against a reference image.
- Promo: a card identified by a promo marking or release-specific numbering.
- Alternate-art or other special artwork: a distinct illustration or layout that must be matched to the corresponding listing image.
Do not assume that every shiny card is the same type of holo. Compare photographs of the front, set symbol, number and foil pattern. If a listing combines several finishes under one title, exclude it unless the sold item is clearly the same version as yours.
Step 3: Assess condition without overstating it
Condition has a direct effect on the prices buyers pay. Inspect the card front and back and write down every defect you can see: bends, creases, whitening along the edges, scratches, dents, print lines, stains and surface wear. Handle the card by its edges and avoid rubbing the surface while inspecting it.

Raw cards
A raw card is ungraded. Match it to completed sales of raw copies with comparable wear, not to pristine-looking listings or graded slabs. Use the photos in sold records to judge whether the corners, edges and surface are broadly similar. If your card has a visible crease, a dent or substantial whitening, do not use sales of clean copies as if they were equivalent.
Graded cards
A graded card is sealed in a holder with a professional grade. Compare it with the same card graded by the same company and carrying the same grade whenever those records are available. A grade from one company is not automatically interchangeable with a numerically identical grade from another, because buyers may price the labels differently.
Photograph and note the defects
For your own records, take clear front-and-back photos in indirect light and make a short defect list. This prevents an optimistic first impression from influencing the search and gives a prospective buyer an accurate description. A protective trading-card sleeve can help preserve the condition you already have; storage does not create extra market value by itself.
Step 4: Find completed sales, not just asking prices
Search for the full card identity, then filter or navigate to transactions that actually ended with a sale. An active listing shows what a seller hopes to receive. A completed sale shows what a buyer accepted, so it is the stronger evidence for valuation.

eBay says its Price Guide is built from completed eBay sales. It attempts to match the same card and, when available, the same grade, and it includes accepted Best Offer prices rather than relying only on the original displayed asking amount. The guide provides raw and graded-card insights, transaction details, median sold prices and historical sales trends covering up to two years.
The guide updates every 24 hours, so it is not a real-time quote. eBay currently states that this feature is available only in the United States. If you are elsewhere, you may still study completed marketplace records where available, but do not assume the US guide represents local currency, demand or shipping conditions.
Search precisely
- Enter the Pokémon or Trainer name, set and collector number.
- Add the finish or promo description, such as reverse holo or promo, only when it accurately describes your card.
- Specify the language if the marketplace allows it or include it in the search text.
- Separate raw results from graded results. For slabs, add the grading company and grade.
- Open individual sold records and check the image, card number, finish, condition and quantity.
- Exclude bundles, lots, mystery products and listings where the card identity cannot be verified.
When a Best Offer sale displays an accepted price, use that accepted amount rather than the seller’s initial figure. Check whether shipping was charged separately and record the sale date, because a transaction from a different market period may not be as comparable as a recent one.

Step 5: Build a defensible price range
Collect several comparable sales instead of anchoring on one spectacular result. A simple worksheet makes differences visible:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Card identity | Name, set, collector number | Prevents similarly named cards from being mixed. |
| Variant | Standard, holo, reverse holo, promo or special artwork | Different finishes can sell at different prices even with the same number. |
| Language | Language shown on the card | Demand and available sales can differ by language. |
| Condition | Raw defects or grading company and grade | A clean raw copy is not a valid match for a damaged one, and slabs need grade matching. |
| Sale date | Date the transaction completed | Demand and prices change over time. |
| Transaction | Accepted price, shipping and single card or bundle | Shows what was actually exchanged and whether the record is comparable. |
After removing mismatches, look for the cluster where several sales sit. A median or middle-of-the-cluster figure is usually more useful than the highest sale. Treat an isolated high or low result as a question to investigate: it may involve a different finish, an unusually strong or weak condition, a bundle, an error in the listing or an unusual moment of demand.
Account for shipping and timing
Two records with the same displayed card price may not represent the same buyer cost if one includes shipping and the other does not. Record shipping consistently and decide whether your range describes the card price alone or the buyer’s delivered cost. State the choice when you discuss the estimate.
Older sales can still show a trend, but they should not silently outweigh newer comparable transactions. eBay notes that its data can lag real time and that market factors affect actual prices, so refresh the comparison before accepting an offer or completing a trade.
Step 6: Decide whether grading is sensible
Do the raw-card comparison before sending a card for professional grading. Then compare completed sales for the same card at matching grades and examine whether the possible improvement would justify every cost and risk involved.

Questions to answer before submitting
- Are there enough graded sales of this exact card to establish a meaningful comparison?
- Does the card’s observed condition support a realistic chance of reaching a grade that buyers pay more for?
- Have you included grading, shipping, insurance and eventual selling costs in the calculation?
- Would a lower-than-hoped-for grade still leave you ahead of selling the card raw?
- Are you comfortable with the time the card may be unavailable while it is processed?
The available pricing evidence does not establish a universal grading fee, a likely grade for your copy or a guaranteed return. Grading can authenticate and standardize a card, but it does not automatically increase your net proceeds. Use matching graded sales and your own cost calculation before making the decision.
Which resources help with identification and pricing?
| Resource | Best use | Limits to remember |
|---|---|---|
| eBay Price Guide | Completed-sale evidence, accepted Best Offer prices, raw and graded insights, medians, transaction details and trends up to two years. | Updates every 24 hours, is not real time and is currently available only in the United States. Results are estimates, not guaranteed proceeds. |
| TCGplayer card guide | Understanding rarity notation, collector-number formats, promo markings and foil distinctions before searching. | Identification guidance is not proof of the current sale value of a particular copy. |
| Official Pokémon Card-Dex | Confirming how an official entry presents fields such as collector number and rarity; useful for historical sets such as Black & White. | Older Card-Dex entries are historical documents and should not be treated as a universal layout for every newer set. |

Choosing the highest sale as the value
Problem: One outlier becomes an unrealistic expectation.
Fix: Use several recent comparable sales and describe a range supported by the cluster.
Forgetting transaction costs
Problem: The estimate is mistaken for money you will receive.
Fix: Separate the observed sale price from your eventual take-home amount. Selling fees, shipping and the buyer’s offer can reduce proceeds, and no single net-value formula applies to every sale.
A practical worksheet for a collection
For more than one card, process each card separately before grouping anything. Create one row per candidate card and fill in:
- Exact name and language.
- Set and collector number.
- Finish or promo marking.
- Raw condition notes, or grading company and grade.
- Three or more comparable completed-sale records when available.
- Sale dates, accepted prices and shipping treatment.
- Your estimated range and the reason any record was excluded.
Only after the rows are complete should you consider a bundle. A lot sale is not directly interchangeable with a single-card sale because buyers may discount a mixed collection for convenience, uncertainty or unwanted cards.
How to protect the card while you decide
Condition can change while a card is being handled, photographed or transported. Use a clean sleeve, keep the card away from moisture and friction, and avoid repeatedly removing it from a holder. Photograph both sides before shipping or meeting a trading partner. These steps preserve the condition you are valuing; they do not turn an ordinary card into a rarer printing.
Final checklist before quoting a value
- Have you recorded the exact name, set and collector number?
- Did you verify language and any
PROMOmarking? - Did you distinguish standard, holo, reverse holo and other artwork or foil variants?
- Did you document bends, creases, whitening, scratches, dents and surface wear?
- Are your comparisons all raw, or do they match the same grading company and grade?
- Are the records completed sales rather than active asking prices?
- Did you remove bundles and mismatched printings?
- Did you note sale date and shipping, and use several results rather than one outlier?
- Did you separate the market estimate from fees, shipping and the amount you may actually receive?
If every answer is yes, you have a defensible estimate for a specific copy. Recheck the sold records when you are ready to sell or trade, because the range can change as demand and timing change.
